{BONUS FEATURES: Trivia I—Characters}DLN – 000- Name: The name "Cardinal" was chosen after searching for a synonym to "Proto". It just so happens to fit in with his color scheme.
- Appearance:
—Cardinal has bright green eyes. It is unknown if his was a modification by Wily or not. —Most of the time he wears his helmet—even when he doesn't wear the helmet, he wears his sunglasses visor. His helmetless design is based off of this piece by dA user RokusukeTanaka.
- Other:
—Cardinal was originally not planned to be included, but the story was changed after examination of the MM3 plot showed Proto's involvement. —His most prized possessions include his scarf, his motorcycle, and his saxophone. —His favorite city is Kansas City. —He is one of the few robots to "eat" on a regular basis: he likes to have coffee when he's reflecting over something.
DLN – 001- Name: "The Blue Menace" was a name modeled after the nickname "The Red Baron". (This is parodied to some degree when Shadow names Cardinal, who was first, "The Red Baron".)
- Personality: The combat programming that turns Mega into "The Blue Menace", was not intended to result in the degree of mercilessness displayed. Unfortunately, this conflict has not only given rise to severe PR and other relationship problems, but has also affected Mega's ability to reason when the program is not active.
DLN – 002- Name: Roll was not given a nickname as it was deemed unnecessary.
- Personality: Roll is an older teenager in Empire of Corruption, and though a bit small for her age, she has matured enough to possess the capacity of being fond of people other than her family. Her break-up with Nico was just as hard on her as it was on Nico, because she thought he had been using her.
- Other:
—Roll was the one who gave Nico his nickname. —Roll maintains a childlike sense of obedience, despite the rest of her programming being more mature. It is believed this was an intentional move by Dr. Light.
-*-*- -*-*- DWN – 009- Name: Metalman
- Status: Was one of the three RMs from the first DWN line mentioned to have "distinctly negative" personalities. This was entirely due to his extremely violent nature, rather than his behavior (which was largely apathetic at worst).
DWN – 010- Name: Airman
- Status: Was one of the foundations for the statements "Death wears BLUE" and Cardinal's assertion that three of the first DWN line had distinctly negative personalities.
- Other: The name "Turbine" is being considered as his official nickname.
DWN – 011- Name:
—"Pisces" was chosen as a nickname after confusion arose between him and Chloe's variation of Bubbleman. It took a while to pick the name. —I've now been told there is a Constellation Droid by the name of Pisces. Unfortunate, but by now he's had the name for almost two years, so it won't change. —"Triton" was considered as a nickname for him, but rejected because most people think of the Disney one, not the Greek one.
- Personality: He is one of the three original DWNs mentioned by Cardinal to have a "distinctly positive" personality. It is no surprise that he was close friends to Speedy.
- Other:
—He is one of the few RMs of his line to have been rebuilt at the Taco, though he wasn't as social because he can't walk very well. This has since been changed with an enchantment that allows him to swim through air as if it were water. —He has never been seen without his mask by anyone but Wily (who built him) and the Menace (who removed it upon his death). (This includes himself!)
DWN – 012- Name: "Speedy" was chosen as a synonym for "Quick". Though the possibility of having a name that better fits in with his brothers has been considered, no other conclusion has been reached.
- Personality:
—Speedy is often listed as unique among Taco stories due to being a Villain Protagonist. Though he technically now shares that distinction with his brothers, he is the only one to have an entire arc devoted to him. —Speedy became very bitter after the events IAtL, to the point where he sought revenge. He later regretted this. —Speedy is repeatedly referenced as the most successful "rogue" robot. He was so successful that his programming was highly sought after by many expert scientists. —Speedy's more mature personality (as opposed to his childlike one) developed after contact with Mr. Gonzales.
- Other:
—Speedy can play the harmonica. —His favorite state is Texas. —He is often referred to as the leader in his group of brothers, though he now shares that responsibility with Cardinal. —The Ghost of Time (Clockwork) was responsible for Speedy's original presence at the Taco. The original story of how he came to be there is different than what is presented in EoC. Now that EoC is over, he has the memories of what happened, but he retains his upgraded weaponry and armor. However, he no longer has the capacity to "phase out".
DWN – 013- Name: "Jaden" was chosen because the Ambassador is very fond of "J" names and the name "Jason" was already taken. It is a variation of "Jadon", which means "thankful" or "he will judge" in Hebrew.
- Personality:
—He is one of the three mentioned DWNs with a "distinctly positive" personality. —He and Speedy are best friends and have similar personalities. They are the only two DWNs known to have integrated into human society. —When he was alive, he worked as a mobile unit. Most of his time was spent in Nebraska. —He has shown to be very self-sacrificing, despite his destructive power.
- Other:
—He was not named for quite some time. The name "Jaden" was chosen as a temporary possibility, but stuck. —He is one of the few RMs to have been rebuilt at the Taco. Despite this, he has not been rebuilt "back home", and the chances of that changing are slim. —He is able to hook up directly to most mainframe systems by cabling in order to compensate for his lack of hands.
DWN – 014- Name: Flashman
- Personality: His gruff personality was largely based off of Chloe's depiction of him, and the fact that his weapon becomes the death of his older brother. Was one of the reasons for the statement "Death wears BLUE".
- Other: He was one of the few robots built specifically for the purpose of countering another robot to the point of death.
DWN – 015- Name: Heatman
- Personality:
—Due to the lyrics of his song, he is depicted as being schizophrenic. It is suspected this the result of a glitch that gave him parts of the AI&A programming of his older brothers, and that he literally was hearing their voices screaming in pain and crying for retribution. —He is one of the three mentioned DWNs of his generation to possess a "distinctly negative" personality.
DWN – 016- Name: Woodman
- Personality: Slightly more cheerful than his brothers due to the preferential treatment Wily gave him. He is much stronger than he looks.
- Other: Woodman is one of the only two known DWNs stated to have been created for a non-offense based type of combat. The other is Speedy.
-*-*- -*-*- DWN – 017- Name: Needleman
- Personality:
—Needle is based partially off of Chloe's depiction. Could be considered an instance of "Death wears BLUE" as he is very quick to use violence to get his way. —Needle keeps a bug and roadkill collection for the sole purpose of freaking his brother Viper out.
DWN – 018- Name:
—"Nico" was chosen after Alnico, which is a group of metals that compose the strongest magnets: Aluminum, Nickel, and Cobalt. —Roll was the one to give him this nickname.
- Personality:
—Nico is more compassionate than most of his other brothers. This is because he was developed with the intention to be a companion for Roll after he finished his work in the mines, since Roll had expressed she was lonely and scared of the other active DWNs. —Nico is a very loyal person, even to people who don't really deserve it. This loyalty drives him to enforce conflict resolution rather than combat programming. —Nico is one of the only two in his generation to retain memories of his life at Light Laboratories, Inc. prior to having his programming rewritten. He chose to leave because he didn't want to lose his sense of independence and was afraid he would be scrapped, not because he wanted to follow any of Wily's plans. (Like Siam, he never received that part of the programming.)
- Appearance:
—His helmetless design was based off of an artwork by Tumblr user effkaytales. He was the first of his line to have a known helmetless design. —He has green eyes and black hair, just like his older brother Cardinal. Cardinal has darker hair, though. —He is self-conscious of his appearance and for that reason almost never removes his helmet.
- Other:
—He was not originally going to have a first-person narration because his personality was not well developed at the time. —He also was not expected to survive his fight with the Menace. —Obviously this changed. It changed to such a degree that not only did he gain multiple narrative chapters, but he became the first of his line to be doodled. He also became the second to receive several sprited sets. —He has stated that he wants a red and black light cycle and a black leather jacket.
DWN – 019- Name: "Siam" was chosen after the phrase "Siamese twins".
- Appearance: Siam is only seen without his helmet once. He has very light icy-blue hair that looks almost white.
- Personality:
—Due to the structure of his programming, Siam is able to receive and process information from two chassises at once. As a result, he is hyper-aware and easily distracted. —His narration reflects this, as both Siam and his clone Gemini will use "I" to refer to themselves and each other. Even when talking to each other, not just about each other. —Siam tends to be self-centered, which is also a result of his programming. He is more concerned about his appearance than his brothers, but less than other variations have depicted. —For some reason, Siam is often very uptight and proper.
- Other:
—Siam was the first to meet Taco residents but the last of his band of brothers to arrive in town. This was to keep him out of trouble, since he was twice as likely to get into it. —Siam was the first to meet Azzie and gave her the nickname "Miss/Madame Butterfly". Shadow calls her this because Siam does so. —Siam does not really respond to the name "Gemini", since he reserves it for his clone.
DWN – 020- Name: Hardman
- Personality: Hardman was the only DWN not to have any speaking role whatsoever.
DWN – 021- Name: Topman
- Personality: Almost as self-centered as Siam. Has been described as being "full of himself".
DWN – 022- Name: "Viper" was chosen as a more deadly variation of "Snake".
- Personality:
—Viper was suggested by Dr. Wily, rather than Dr. Light. He was built by Wily to serve as a Dragon and was the first to be reprogrammed. It is suspected he was originally a far more quiet and peacefully observant bot. —Viper was both persuasive and brutal. His personality was ultimately inspired by the behavior and actions of Lucifer and Saruman. —Viper deactivated due to the damages received in his fight with Shadow. Because of that experience, he no longer feared death. —The only thing Viper was afraid of was Needle, but he used Siam as his bodyguard to work around that. —Viper enjoyed harassing Siam to the point where it is his stated hobby. —Viper trusted no one because he no longer understood the concept once he was rebooted. As a result, he spied on everyone and manipulated his brothers to his own end.
- Other:
—Viper has been reactivated (again), though it is unclear where he is or who repaired him. —Though his methods differed, Viper is stated to have pursued a very similar goal as the one pursued by Cardinal, Speedy, and Jaden. This is a sign of the consequences of AI&A programming reaching as complex a level as possessed by the more independent robots.
DWN – 023- Name: Sparkman
- Personality:
—Stated to be "obsessed" with the idea of a robot revolution. —It is believed this is a result of his AI&A programming being almost identical to Elecman's, who also believed in starting a robot uprising.
- Other: Originally, he was intended to have a speaking narrative and be a main character that survived. This changed primarily when Nico's personality developed and his did not. When it became clear that he would only get one possible first-person chapter, he was reduced to a minor character and the chapter was replaced.
DWN – 024- Name: Shadow wants a nickname because his brothers have nicknames, but as of yet he has not found one he likes. He is considering the nickname "Phantom", though he finds it too grand for him.
- Personality:
—Shadow is the most stoic of all his brothers. This is because he did not receive an emotions program right away. —Shadow often serves as counterbalance to Nico, who is more emotional.
- Other:
—Shadow is originally from outer space. —Shadow's favorite city is Houston, Texas.
{BONUS FEATURES: Trivia II—Story}DID YOU KNOW?- The idea for a sequel to I Am the Law was first developed in 2011. The original sequel was set to be in Speedy's perspective and focus on his interactions with the 3rd-gen Wily robots.
- Snakeman was considered as a possible narrative protagonist in earlier concepts of Empire of Corruption.
- Magnetman was considered as another possible narrator, since he would be more able to interact with all the 3rd-gen Wily robots. This idea was rejected in favor of having a subplot involving him and Roll.
- Empire of Corruption was the first (and so far only) story to receive daily updates from start to finish.
- The banners for EoC were developed because Viper's font color is dark green… which blends into the Forum skin used by the Ambassador (Jade Phoenix). Scrac helped find the fonts for the banners.
- Originally, Spark was set to be a major character. He was going to be the brother in charge of running the generator used by the survivors. This concept fell through when his personality could not be developed, and Nico was switched in instead.
- Shadow and Siam are the only two robot narrators not to have songs. It is hoped that they have songs in History Repeating: Red, which had not yet been released when the story was written and completed.
- Chloe was considered as an illustrator for the story. Then the Ambassador remembered she didn't have the capacity to pay for commissions.

{BONUS FEATURES: Behind the Scenes I}When Empire of Corruption was finally brought up again, the original idea for a plotline didn't seem to fit anymore. Before the story could be approved, a plot had to be decided upon and chosen. These were the suggestions put forward in the beginning. Take a look! SINGLE-PRONGED PROPOSALS- Have Speedy return to Texas after being repaired at the Taco, negotiate with the USAF and CIA.
Pros: —Fits in with what I've already set up regarding what ultimately happens to him
Cons: —Very hard to without a noticeable amount of handwaving regarding how he was rescued and repaired —Also makes it hard to do anything for any later games, and I really want to do something for MM3
- Follow a variation of the MM3 plotline, but Speedy's backup becomes self-aware and hacks his way to a new chassis and is working on getting rebuilt while MM3 is going on
Pros: —Allows me to do MM3 —Also makes it much easier to get Speedy in a position where he is rebuilt, and doesn't have to get the military and the feds involved (top brass is notoriously difficult to write for, believe me I've tried)
Cons: —The interaction with the MM3 characters would be terribly limited, since Speedy wouldn't have a mobile chassis —It's also possible, very possible that the whole story could go through and he fails to get a new chassis, because there are kinda only two people who have the capacity to do so, and one of them is evil and the other isn't exactly an ally
- Same as above, but only as a secondary plotline, with the main plotline involving Magnetman
Pros: —Allows me to focus on the MM3 characters and deal with Speedy trying to get a new chassis without the feds and military getting involved
Cons: —I want to include Shadow and Gemini, but they don't have songs —Writing the sibling interactions between Magnet and his gen would be quite difficult, because his focus is not on family —It wouldn't allow me to go into as much detail about the villains as I would like
- Same as above, except the main plotline follows Mega
Cons: —I don't want to write for Mega as the main plotline. —The majority of the major characters wouldn't get adequate development. —I'd have to include all the antagonists from the game and I really can't want to be bothered to do that for a few of them —I really can't see this ending well
Pros: —It would probably make the most sense as to why both MM3 RMs and Speedy are involved in the plotline
Sticky points:- What happened to Speedy's chassis after his fight with MegaMan? This never was officially stated at the end of IAtL. I want to change the original answer, which was devised to explain how he ended up at the Taco. I want something less hand-wavy.
- What is Speedy's involvement with the MM3 plotline? If he has a mobile chassis, he'd probably end up getting into fights with the Blue Menace and with his brothers. If he doesn't, then he won't be able to interact much at all with anyone. That would make it impossible to do the story from his perspective, and hard to justify interactions with him from other perspectives.
- Assuming Speedy gets a new chassis in-universe, who will build it? It's unlikely Wily will, and it's unlikely that Light could do so without A.) Wily finding out, and B.) Mega knowing about it. And that's assuming he would be willing, which is also very unlikely, given his lyrics….
DOUBLE-PRONGED PROPOSAL—Line 1 would follow four of the MM3 Robot Masters (Snake, Gemini, Magnet, and Spark). Snake goes completely rogue and becomes The Starscream. He takes over the other combat robots with the exception of Shadow, who remains elusive. While fighting against Mega, he also is spying on his brothers. He smirked, a cold glow in his eyes as he held his older brother pinned to the wall. Something began coiling around the terrified crystalline robot's armor.
"You are truly an idiot. I see all." —Line 2 would follow Speedy and his interactions with Shadow in attempts to get a new chassis. The two of them manage to break in to the old lab that Wily had to get the data, but this alerts Light to their location and the location of the old lab. The intruder alarm started blaring. Shadow looked over to the doorway, becoming tense. "I'm pretty sure this is not a good sign."
"Well do something! I don't even have a chassis!"
He glanced up at the speaker system. The alarms continued to go off. "We may not have time to try and restart the machines. I do believe your old enemy has followed us here."
{BONUS FEATURES: Behind the Scenes II}Ever wonder what the story looked like while it was being made?
Like many stories by the Ambassador, the story began posting without a concrete idea of how it would turn out. After this began to cause concerns with current Taco events, the rest of the story was planned out. As the story went on, several changes were made. Take a look!
NOTE: The organization of Chapters 22-24 and the Epilogue changed several times, but only the outlines actually written down are presented here.
Working Timeline
Part 9: Conversation with Viper continues; Magnet's perspective. Viper explains his plans for domination—he doesn't want dominion, he just wants to be independent from humans, which will require a new world order. (Magnet) Part 10: While the others set about to building fortresses, Magnet sneaks off to talk with Roll. Viper spies on all of them. (Third person)
Part 11: Shadow meets Proto midway through Texas. Proto warns him that he is indebted to Wily and that Mega will be coming after him. Shadow says that if Mega is "The Blue Menace", then Proto is "The Red Baron". (Shadow) Part 12: Mega goes off to get one of the crystals back, but it was a false coordinate and a trap. Speedy traps him and tells Mega that he is a killer, and that he doesn't want this to end like the other times. Unable to fight just a voice, Mega expresses pain at his fate. Speedy is not sympathetic. (Speedy)
Part 13: Gemini plays messenger between Viper and Needle. He decides to leave his clone in place and follows after Magnet, who meets with Roll again. (Gemini) Part 14: Shadow arrives in Redención. He meets Mr. Gonzales and tells him what happened. Mr. Gonzales tells him what news he can and tells him about the library Speedy used to go to, and gives him the map to the burial place. He tells Shadow to be careful and not to get into as much trouble Speedy got into. Shadow promises to behave, but insists that he wants to live. (Shadow)
Part 15: Shadow goes to the library in the nearby town and makes contact with Speedy. Speedy promises to give him the BetaEmotions program if Shadow helps him get a new chassis. The two of them decide to break in to the old lab. (Shadow) Part 16: Proto fights Mega after he defeats HardMan. He treats it as a game, though secretly is very angry. He then gets orders from Wily to track down Shadow. (Proto)
Part 17: After hearing Mega has defeated both Needle and Hardman, Gemini argues with Viper. Viper attacks him in his base, which is revealed to be hooked up to a spy system. Snippets of Topman's conversation with Mega plays as they fight. Viper throws Gemini out. (Gemini.) Part 18: Gemini tries to run away, but is cornered by Mega. Mega fights him, but in the end he fools Mega by having his clone exploded and hiding in the rubble. Mega falls for it and leaves, but Proto sees Gemini escape. He confronts Gemini and forces him to help him find Shadow. (Gemini)
Part 19: Magnet meets with Roll for the last time. She tells him to leave and not come back, and warns that Mega is after him. He leaves heartbroken. Not too long after, Mega hunts him down and fights him VERY angrily. Magnet is badly injured, but is rescued by Proto, who tricks Mega into thinking that Magnet was crushed by falling rubble. (Magnet) Part 20: Proto talks with Gemini and Magnet. He tells them how their programming makes them unique, robots who don't really obey orders. He mentions that Speedy, Jaden, and Pisces were the same, and that he suspects Speedy's programming is still active. He tells them he has been ordered to track down Shadow, and he still wants to… but not because of Wily anymore. They agree to help him and decide to make their way to the lab. He goes off to find Mega again. (Third person)
Part 21: Mega fights Spark, who tells him that the robots aren't mindless machines like before, and that the uprising is inevitable once there are enough machines with free will. Mega destroys him. (Spark) Part 22: Everyone convenes on the old laboratory; first Speedy, who hacks into the system, then Shadow who follows him inside. The two of them make it to one of the factory rooms when the intruder alarms start going off: it is Mega. Speedy stalls by sending robots after Mega, and then Proto announces he and the others are here. Gemini and Magnet take Speedy's old chassis to the lab, where they hastily set about doing repairs now that they have the materials and the blueprints handy. (Third person)
Part 23: Proto and Shadow run off to draw Mega away to stall him further. Shadow fights him one-on-one and loses very badly. He is deactivated but Proto steps in to stop Mega from destroying him. Proto and Mega fight and Proto reveals his identity and expresses great disgust and disdain for Mega. He saves Shadow and makes a run for it. (Proto) Part 24: Mega tracks Viper down. Viper tries to tempt him but Mega eventually just kills him. He's left feeling worn out and wondering if it's worth it to keep going on. (Third person)
Epilogue: Proto, Shadow, Magnet, and Gemini are drinking at the bar in Redención. Speedy walks in with new clothes for the others, as well as news about Mega's fight with Gamma. They decide to stay in hiding for now.
First Timeline Change
Part 12: Proto reflects on Shadow's comparison of him with Mega and about robot AI&A systems (Proto)
Part 21: In order to give them more time to find the lab, Speedy goes to stall Mega by making him relive memories. He is too late to save Spark, but he manages to severely slow Mega down. In the process, he learns that revenge doesn't make pain go away, and he is left feeling bitter and confused. (Speedy)
Second Timeline Change
Part 24: Speedy talks with the others while they work on repairing Shadow in Kansas City. He thanks them for their help and talks with them about their vision for a peaceful coexistence with humans. He talks about his dream of returning to Texas and seeing Pops again, even if he can't stay. Proto warns him that after what has just happened, it's likely that such a move would be putting Pops in an overly difficult situation. Speedy thinks for a while and then explains what family has meant to him, and how they need to stick together and get what help they can. The chapter ends with Shadow waking up. (Speedy)
Epilogue: Proto, Shadow, Magnet, and Gemini are drinking at the bar in Redención, listening to the journal entry regarding Mega's fight with Viper. (Mega tracks Viper down. Viper tries to tempt him but Mega eventually just kills him.) Speedy walks in with new clothes for the others, as well as news about Mega's fight with Gamma. They decide to stay in hiding for a few years until they can start looking into getting citizenship. Proto suggests that in the meantime, they set up their own small fortress in Kansas for safety, complete with their own generator. Speedy agrees, but says they should have it in Texas instead, and live more simply. Magnet suggests they have a vote, and Siam asks if he can vote twice. They decide to put that off for now, and it ends with Proto playing the saxophone as they go outside to look at the stars. (Third Person)

{BONUS FEATURES: Deleted Scenes I}This scene includes the entirety of what the Menace was subjected to when Speedy played back the journals of his fallen brothers. About three scenes would be playing at once. ————————— That’s when I took a hit to the shoulder. PAIN!I had never felt such pain before! Before I could react, I took another hit to my abdomen. I dropped from the sky, crashing to the conveyor belt. The last thing I saw was the boy in blue aiming his cannon at my heart. BLAM.…Heh. I had been wrong… I felt my damaged arm being opened and the device that summoned my blades being extracted from it. As all other sensations began to fade, I heard him fleeing as fast as he could. —————— That was when he looked up with a disturbingly familiar psychotic grin on his face. “M-Metal?!” BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!I collapsed, deep gashes all over me from saw blades tearing through my skin. What was going on…? Rolling to the side, I called forth another storm of leaves. The fight went on. I was becoming highly uncomfortable with being so immobile. It made it impossible to dodge. There was no turning back, though… it was time to end it. The world was swirling with leaves. But I was not built to fight solely defensively. I had to attack. And these left me open to counterattacks; saw blades of death. BLAM.I was thrown into a tree by the force of the cannon fire to my exposed interior. Sensors started going offline as I felt myself powering down. I had fallen. My vision was gone by the time I felt someone removing my leaf-blade summoner from inside my right hand. I could hear them running off as the count-down started. Sorry, older brothers… I have failed… —————— Then something happened that I did not expect. The color of his armor flickered, turning green. That is when the leaves came. THUNK THUNK THUNK ERRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!I staggered back in pain as the honing leaf-blades clogged my fan, grinding against the gears and bringing it to a halt. This wasn’t happening…it couldn’t be happening…! Angry and in great pain, I fired at him from my arm cannon. He jumped into the air to avoid it, raising his arm cannon and— BLAM.I was thrown down to the floor, a large hole in my back. The world started to fade around me. I felt him open up my arm cannon, taking out the machinery that created the small but powerful tornadoes. Suddenly, we began falling. If I had a mouth, I would have smiled. Even in my death, terror would still rain from the sky. They would pay… —————— His armor glowed the color of sapphires as he rose up, the wind whistling around him. He fired a small tornado up into the night sky. Airman’s weapon!WARNING. WARNING. DANGER. DANGER.Suddenly, I felt something which horrified me. A fast approaching signal from one of my brothers. Quickman was on the move, and he was headed straight for us! MegaMan raised his launcher and pointed it right at me, looking about ready to fall over. One more Crash Bomb ought to do it…Glancing behind me, I saw open air. I only had one shot to override this program. Quickman… I’m sorry you had to see this…Taking a deep breath, I charged right for him! KKKKKKKRRWOOOOOOOOOOOOH!I was blasted head on with a powerful miniature tornado. It hit me square in the chest and sent me flying… …all the way over the edge… …down… …down… “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”Suddenly, my body was filled with pain and there was a horrible sound of crunching metal, severing wires, accompanied by a great crash. I groaned. Off in the distance, I could hear someone shouting. “HEY!”Run, Quickman, I thought as I forced myself to move, though it was hard to do. I don’t want you to have to see this…I heard someone walking up next to me. I could have sworn my insides felt cold, but it was probably just due to exposure to the night air. I gave a slight smile as I heard a plasma cannon being primed to fire. I did it… my will overcame the program…A child’s hand reached into the exposed interior of my arm to retrieve my launcher. My only weapon… gone. No one will no the truth to this story…BLAM.—————— His armor started glowing and it changed colors. He turned a sort of honey-color; brown and yellow armor. TSSSSSEWWW!No way… Metal…? These… these weapons are like his…Metal blades whistled through the water, cutting into my armor. It hurt. I tried to avoid the blades, but I wasn’t nearly as agile as he was. They sliced my suit to ribbons, exposing the mechanical structure underneath. I tried swimming out of their way, but they seemed to be everywhere. THUNK.One of them pinned me to the floor. I sighed, damaged though I was. Firing bubbles, I kept up the fight. But it was useless; another saw blade pinned that arm to the floor as well. As I struggled against it, the boy walked over, his armor reverting to normal. He raised his arm cannon and pointed at my exposed inner circuitry. BLAM.Sensations began to fade. As my self-destruct sequence started up, I felt him removing my bubble launcher from my arm and my mask from my helmet. Water rushed into my face as he swam off. So much for being redeemed… I guess they were right… —————— His armor suddenly drained of color, taking on the color of ashes. He fired a sphere at me that exploded into liquid on contact. SPLOOOOOOOOOOOSH!I was suddenly blinded by acid! I cried out in pain, staggering back as it ate away at my armor and exposing my circuitry. This… this couldn’t be happening! BLAM.I tipped over backwards and crashed to the floor, a large hole where the green gem on my armor had been. So much for my important circuitry and energy core… As sensations started fading, I felt the boy taking out my flamethrower from my arm. He was the hero… Now I am nothing but fire… —————— Suddenly, his armor… changed. It shifted from an admirable shade of blue to a gaudy combination of yellow and brown. When he looked up, he had a disturbing grin on his face. BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!Saw blades suddenly sliced across my armor, tearing me apart. Several lodged into the ceiling, walls, and floor. I fired again, but my aim was off and I only managed to hit him a few times before the rain of death continued. One of them lodged into my stopper. And while I was trying to un-jam it… BLAM.I collapsed to the icy floor, sensations fading. As the countdown started, I felt someone removing the inner mechanics of my stopper. Then they ran off. Looks like even a master of time eventually has to stop as well… —————— I didn’t notice that his armor had changed to purple and white until it was too late. BLAM!Time stopped, and so did I. It was like I had run into a brick wall. I was in pain. Cannon fire blasted into me as I was suspended in the air and in time, completely helpless. Part of the armor over the important circuitry in my chest became riddled with holes. And then… BLAM.Time resumed, and I landed on the ground with a large hole through my chest. My body was burning with pain as circuitry sparked, trying to connect but failing. I couldn’t move, and my senses were fading. As he slowly approached, I fell to my knees, dropping the boomerangs in my hands. Out in the distance, I could hear a horse approaching from behind us and see a car from town rushing out. But it was too late… I fell to my side on the ground. I guess… speed means nothing… when it’s Death you are running from… I thought sadly. My power systems were failing, but I struggled to hang on. A child’s hand pried my wrist launcher from my body as my vision failed and I closed my eyes for the final time. I was burning… burning…. I struggled to breathe, but I had been so badly damaged that my interior fans could not circulate this air through me. It was really over. I’m not scared anymore… I go to join the ranks of my brothers that have fallen before…Sounds seemed to be everywhere, but I no longer registered them. My power systems were failing, and I could feel my back-up self destruct sequence starting. In moments, I would be dead and my body destroyed. As I drew my last breath, my interior fans failing in the wake of so much damage to my system, I lamented my failure. I'm sorry… I failed you all…
What they say is true…((Art by dA user Gold-Buster)) Death does wear blue…—————— He dodged the rain of needles as if he didn't fear death at all. He dodged to and fro, moving with incredible agility. I was just starting to realize how much trouble I was in when he appeared above me and fired head-on. BLAM!I fell back. I fired upon him, but he took the hit with a minimal flinch. It did not deter him. BLAM.—————— The fight began, but none of my hits seemed to connect. He was everywhere, moving with frightening speed. Most of his hits didn't make so much as a dent, but then they started breaking through. BLAM!I staggered back, only to see him appear behind my left shoulder and fire at close range, reaching for my power compartment as he did so. BLAM.—————— I was spinning when his armor changed, so I didn't realize it until too late. Too late did I see the colors morph to a familiar scheme. He dodged as I came bearing down at him, and I was forced to stop before I broke my interior mechanics. That was when he chose to fire. BLAM!A rain of fists pounded me out of shape. BLAM!I was pinned to the wall, my balance completely lost—the last hit had dislocated my balancing mechanics. The world was spinning when something was pried from my chassis. I didn't even see it coming. BLAM.—————— Escape. Escape. We had to escape. I was here, I was there. My laser bounced off the walls, my clone and I firing in succession. I had never seen him so cornered, so at odds. I would have taken pride in this, were it not for the fact that I was trying not to die. WHAM!I almost fell down on top of him when a small object with the force of a cannon ball slammed against the ceiling. "HardMan!" Gemini yelled. I looked at the Menace in dismay, realizing he was right. This was unfortunately a poor decision, as the next thing I saw was the rain of fists coming right at me. WHAM! WHAM! WHAMWHAMWHAMWHAM—Siam screamed in pain. Parts of my plating were cracked and broken off, leaving my interior components exposed. Gemini tackled him, the two of them wrestling for control, lasers and knuckles flying everywhere. Parts of the ceiling started to fall. BLAM.The last thing I remember was the ceiling coming down on top of us. —————— He gritted his teeth and fired again. I fired a series of horseshoe magnets on him, preparing to fight the monster I had heard about—but that wasn't what I got. He wasn't running his combat program. For him, this was personal. He was personally venting his anger—hoping to kill me in the process! "You think you're the only one who can love?!" "She's my sister! I won't let you hurt her!" My magnetic field went off, pulling him toward me. I blanked out, my own circuitry going haywire. His feet flew out from under him and he cried in surprise. When the effect lessened, though, he fired on me again. Enough was enough. "You walk into my town, waving that gun around! You want a fight? I’ll give you one tonight!" "Oh yeah?! Well take THIS!" Suddenly his eyes turned dark, and his blue plating faded to a grey and yellow scheme. I had seen this in the database before—it was a power far more potent than even Spark's, which I was terribly weak to. My pupils must have shrunk down to a pixel in size as I realized too late that he must have taken the power unit from the storage at Light Laboratories. K-ZAP!I heard the explosion of short-circuits. My system absolutely lost it, magnetic fields destabilizing the support beams of the ceiling. The room started caving in. BLAM.—————— KTANG!My left electrode was heavily dented by a powerful blow. KTANGKTANGKTANG—HardMan? I thought weakly as the heavy hits started pounding me out of shape. No… NO! We can't lose! What about our—BLAM.
{BONUS FEATURES: Deleted Scenes II}Originally, Mega was going to reflect on what Viper told him after the fight. This was discarded in favor of a smoother transition to what the surviving robots were doing in Texas. It's a much shorter scene, but here it is. Mega looked down at the unmoving chassis. He felt tired, more tired than he cared to admit.((Art by Tumblr user effkaytales.)) He remembered the deaths of the others, though not through his own eyes. Because of the journals Speedy had kept, their last accounts survived. And he had been forced to relive them twice over.
Was that "ProtoMan" right? Would anything he did matter at all?
He was tired of this war. It had all happened all before—he'd seen what comes and what’s in store.
"And I know… it will all happen… again…"

Status: Permanently Activated.WHAM!I was hit with a wave of terror again, fully comprehending the scene of war around me, and at the anguish of losing another brother, another I couldn't save. At the same moment, Magnet and Siam started unhooking me from the wires. And moments later, the whole building shook with an explosion. We scrambled back to our feet. The smell of smoke, the sound of broken systems and sparking electronics, and the shudder of cannon fire on another floor made the whole scene seem like something out of an old war movie. I was terribly disoriented. Magnet put one of my arms over his shoulder, shouting over the noise. "We gotta get out of here! This place is gonna fall in on top of us!" Before I could protest, Gemini took my other arm and the two of them made a run for it. As we dodged our way through hallways that were now full of electrical and fire hazards, my system fully caught up to itself. No longer was I still thinking in a stupor, the wait after restarting. It was like snapping awake with a sharp click. Run Program: Non-Battle Tactical sequence. Running… Non-Battle Tactical sequence online. Status: Permanently activated.I made a break for it, racing so fast and so sudden that I took my brothers by surprise. How I managed to carry them both, I can only guess—I was a combat robot, after all. There was a horrid crash sound as the floor behind us gave way. Siam began to panic and started blasting a way to the nearest wall, rather than trying to find an exit. We ended up leaving by way of a wall, only to remember we were on the second floor of the building. Magnet slowed the fall by use of his power, but we hit the ground heavily. The ground shook as the left wing of the mostly-destroyed lab continued to collapse. We gaped in horror, only to nearly be run over as someone emerged from the rubble and started running toward us. "GET UP AND GET OUT!"Before I could object or question, the other two grabbed me and ran for a van off in the distance. We all loaded inside. The stranger—Cardinal, as I soon figured out—jumped into the driver's seat and started the ignition. We were burning rubber before we had time to belt ourselves in.
{BONUS FEATURES: Extended DVD Scene II} This scene takes place after Part XXIV and before the Epilogue.
After Shadow was repaired, we all spent some time in recovery. The others were all still processing what had happened recently—it was a lot to take in all at once. The "war" had hit them hard. They had experienced heavy pain of loss—something most of them were not familiar with. There was a sense of stunned stupor that permeated the atmosphere. When I found Speedy looking over the blueprints of his brothers in the middle of the night, I knew it was time for us to move on. He had been hit the hardest. He had been such a cheerful 'bot—the somber man he had become was hardly recognizable. He once had a job, a family, and a community. Now he was a renegade exile, the last of his generation of brothers. When he approached me and asked to give a "proper burial" to his brothers, I agreed. ————————— "Dust upon the wind," he muttered. "The shadows of the past walk the night." We were all silent as we looked out on the hiding place. It was unremarkable to the eye; only sentiment and memory distinguished it from the rest of the landscape. Speedy continued talking. "You know the last time I was here? It was before I died. They're all here, in their own way. The ones who've fallen before." Shadow glanced at me with that disapproving look of his. Are you sure this was a good idea?
He needed this closure, and he needed it more than you could possibly understand. He's the sole survivor of his generation. He lost everything. If he doesn't leave his old life behind, then he won't be able to make a new one.
He sounds glitched.
He is in pain. The silent conversation was interrupted as the box was unearthed. The artifacts inside were old, years old. They were covered with dust and oil stains. There was a drill, a saw blade, a mask, a metal leaf… a fan, a lighter, a helmet. And a boomerang. The dog-tags of our brothers. Speedy lightly touched a few fingers to these relics of his past life, lost in thought. The ceremony was largely silent. Nico brought forward new tokens to add to the box. Electrode. Top. Spike. Gloves. Magnet. Mirror. Shuriken. Snake. After a moment of thought, I even threw in a pair of sunglasses. "Let us not forget those have fallen before us," Speedy said in a thick tone as Siam and Gemini started to rebury to box. "Nor the sacrifices we have made. We are considered among the dead. This war has come at great cost—let us work to end it, rather than perpetuate it." We emerged out into the sunlight. One of my hands shifted into a cannon blaster. BLAM.
BLAM.
BLAM.The last of the cannon fire seemed to hang in the air. "Perhaps…" Siam muttered. "We should go…?" Gemini finished off. "Leave me be," Speedy replied heavily, his face turned away. He had taken off his helmet—the first time they had seen him without one. "I need some time alone." We respectfully moved away to give him privacy. He knelt down in the dust of the dry land—his former home, a final resting place. He stared off into space until the sun went down. Finally, when the day was gone, he slowly stood again. "Is what they say true… Does Death wear blue? Can he… fall…?"

{BONUS FEATURES: Commentary I—Director}TRAILER- I had fun with this one. A lot of people were impressed, and I was specifically asked why I was so good at making these. I'm pretty sure the answer is "I took Visual Communications in college". I only started doing that sort of thing a year or two after taking that class.
- Like most trailers, there was one scene that wasn't used in the story. And that was the one where it showed Shadow being dragged out of a crater.
PART I- I changed this several times. I eventually decided to do a one-sided interaction with Dr. Light and the database. It was fun because you never actually got to see Dr. Light, but you got an idea of what he was thinking based on the commands he used.
- I had to look up Wily's first name for this. That was when I decided that Wily and Light were going to be on a first name basis.
PART II- This was one of the few third-person pieces. I thought it was kind of poorly paced at first, but looking back it helped set things up rather well. After all, the story does jump perspective from update to update.
- At this point I wasn't sure how long the story would be or where exactly it was going. I only had a vague idea.
PART III- One of my favorite chapters. This is the first first-person narration we see, and it's from Speedy's perspective. I think it was great and really helped establish what it was like for a robot to be deactivated like he was, only "alive" through the mainframe. Poor guy screamed in terror, though—thankfully he only screeched and didn't actually scream, because otherwise no amount of trickery could have convinced Wily that he wasn't awake.
- This is the first we really see of Snakeman. At that point he had already been reprogrammed, but not all the updates were set to kick in. Wily had the updates delayed in order to get more time to work on other robots with Light, especially Gamma.
PART IV- Shadow~ Fans of the series will notice how his activation is similar to Speedy's. They will also notice that he got his branding in a different order than Speedy did. THERE IS A REASON and that is Wily noticed that people being branded with a hot iron made them struggle against the bonds more, so he had them realize pain only after they got their serial numbers branded.
- Wily honestly didn't expect Shadow to break out and did truly get badly damaged in the fight between Shadow and Snakeman.
PART V- Here we see the first narration of Siam. …He doesn't really mince words, does he? He says exactly what he thinks, which got him in pretty dangerous trouble later on.
- We also see the first hints of Magnet's relationship with Roll. He shields her eyes, keeps her company while Mega and Rush patrol, and saves her from Siam's glitching combat program.
PART VI- Not quite my best work, but it helps show how simple and straightforward Shadow was before he matured and got an emotions program. I also like the image of him riding a giant hopping frog all the way down to Texas.
PART VII- This was one of the few instances where we see Light and Wily interacting with one another. I'd consider this to be what people should think of when they want to know what their relationship in that timeline is like. They were friends once, and call each other not only by first names, but by nicknames: they're "Al" and "Tom" to each other. Wily honestly (if twisted by jealousy) admires and respects Light's work, and thinks they could do much more working together than against each other. He worries when Light expresses doubts about his feelings for Rock's programming, and feels very guilty about how badly he screwed up with bringing Blues back. Which is why Wily's double-crossing, lying, and sabotage is all the more painful in the end.
- We see the start of the more obvious examples of how Speedy isn't a perfectly good being. Mostly good and very sympathetic, but he does have his faults. Speedy was never meant to be flawless, and I think his more immature "I HATE YOU" moments really showed that better than they did in IAtL.
- Also once again the knight in shiny armor comes to rescue Roll. Poor Nico, he only made it harder on himself in the end.
PART VIII- OOOH THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHAPTERS
- We get to see Viper for the first time! You have no idea how fun it was to write this! I seem to have this talent for writing really no-nonsense villains.
- As mentioned before, Viper's personality is a lot different than Snake's. After he was reprogrammed, deactivated, and rebooted, he became the ruthless adder he spent the rest of his life as. He is very heavily influenced by Saruman, particularly Peter Howell's and Christopher Lee's depictions of him.
PART IX- This is the first time we're really introduced to the idea of a robot society. Viper and Cardinal both want this, but in different ways and for different reasons. The idea for a robot society was not a theme I originally had in the story, but it sort of developed when I had to come up with a motive and goal for Viper to differentiate him from Wily.
- I felt like I was repeating a lot of what Viper had said in the previous chapter, but I just felt that when Part XVIII ended, it wasn't very clear what Viper was up to or what he was getting at. That's the main reason this chapter turned out the way it did.
- I think this chapter really helped develop Nico's personality. We see how he chooses to use his power to help people out, rather than to hurt them.
- It ought to be noted that although Viper's not afraid of Nico, Nico was the only one who could make Viper listen to what he had to say.
- The idea of a robot society would become a theme throughout the story. I think if I make another sequel later, it will probably involve the development of this idea.
PART X- Aw, this chapter. This chapter was adorable, though by that time I already knew how it would end. It was bittersweet.
- This is also the first we see of Viper's system of spy cameras. He's gotten very good at using them at the Taco, even though he hasn't shown up yet. If he does ever show up, he'll be very dangerous.
PART XI- The fight between Shadow and Cardinal was interesting to write. Cardinal points out that Shadow is being unreasonable, which is how I felt when I was writing it out. To be fair, Shadow didn't know the concept of "trust" very well yet.
- "YOU I name The Red Baron!" was one of my favorite lines of the story. Cardinal really took the comparison to both the infamous German WWI flying ace and to his younger (and very hated) brother rather hard.
PART XII- Originally, what was in Chapter 21 was to go here. I changed that because I felt it was way out of place. I still wanted to incorporate Speedy, though, since he's DWN - 012.
- Cardinal's first speaking narrative. It really made me fonder of his character and really helped me decide to elevate his status and become part of the band of brothers at the end. That really changed the direction of the story.
PART XIII- The conversation between Needle and Snake was the first thing I wrote for this chapter, after Chloe and Azzie asked Siam what alt!Needle was like. The idea of him having a bug collection to freak his brother out just seemed too good to pass up. (No, I don't know how he manages to do that without hands.)
- I used a lot of Chloe's doodles for this chapter. I really love her stuff, she's a great artist. :>
- More Nico/Roll! This time we see how other people view the relationship—namely, they're horrified and it's more of a Romeo/Juliet thing because 2/3 of the surviving DLNs actively want the DWN line deactivated.
PART XIV- I realized in a later on that I kept using variations of shadow and descriptions of Speedy as titles. I decided not to try and think of more creative titles anyway
because of laziness. :B
- I didn't want to include Redención much because I didn't want to place the Sheriff in too difficult a position. He means well and believes in giving people a chance, but he also has a very important duty to the law. He kind of got in hot water by the end of IAtL for letting Speedy be around and not telling anyone—he would get in a lot of trouble if there was a repetition of the problem. Ultimately this resulted in the robots hiding from him at all costs.
- We see the reappearance of Pops. Originally he wasn't going to make more than a minor appearance, but I decided Shadow wouldn't know where to go right away. Pops really was skeptical of Shadow at first, but he was willing to risk it if it would buy him time to let the customers in his bar escape, should Shadow have proved a threat. Also, Pops is a war veteran (no I'm not sure what war as we don't know what year it's supposed to be, but he was a Marine) so he can handle himself better than most.
PART XV- I don't actually have much to say about this chapter. It was pretty straightforward and easy to write.
PART XVI- Pretty sure that this was the time I decided that Cardinal likes Kansas City. That might sound odd to people who don't live in Kansas or Missouri, but Kansas City is actually quite a large city with a rich musical culture behind it. It also has the plaza. The lights and the music just seemed to fit him very well.
- I realized that in order for this chapter to work, the Menace's combat programming would have to work a little differently than it did in IAtL. In IAtL, it tends to activate on the slightest thing. But by the time EoC comes around, that's no longer the case all the time. Honestly this only makes sense—he would be way too dangerous otherwise, so Light probably tried to modify the combat program.
- Cardinal's font color is Brick, but I used red in this chapter because of how the lyrics are presented on the official website for The Megas.
- By now I was already screencapping large pictures for size, but I chose not to do so with imbisol's picture of Cardinal getting shot in the helmet. (I did this later for Nico's system going haywire too.) This was because I really wanted people to see every glorious detail of the work. Too bad it really stretches the page.
PART XVII- The title was a reference to the saying "eyes on the back of your head" and the role of Viper as tempter/corruptor. I found it clever and ominous.
- This chapter is actually from Gemini's perspective, not Siam's perspective. Originally it was going to be that Gemini stayed behind while Siam went to talk to Viper, but I realized that Siam isn't that thoughtless even when angry and scared.
- I had been planning to include Top's actual conversation with the Menace at first, but I couldn't think of a good one and I couldn't figure out how to fit it in with the rest of the dialogue.
PART XVIII- This chapter was originally going to be larger, with a bit more of a transition to Siam's fight, but I changed my mind. Partially out of impatience, and partially to set the scene for the surreal urgency that would characterize the rest of the story.
- I didn't find any good pictures for DWN - 019 until after writing this chapter. I may put some up, once I get the time.
- This is the first (and so far only) instance in which the Menace runs his combat program and the opponent survives without any outside help. Cardinal didn't actually come until after the fight was over.
- I felt Siam's trust of Cardinal might be unbelievable to some people, but I did the best I could. It ought to be noted that at this point, he's suffering from something similar to shell shock and just doesn't want to fight, even if it means getting hurt worse.
PART XIXCHAPTER NINETEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
- This chapter was heart-wrenching to write, it really was. The relevant song (which should be listened to while reading, honestly) seemed to become exponentially sadder at this point, since Nico's personality had really developed. It was probably the hardest chapter to write out of the whole story, though parts of Ch. 21 came close.
- The picture of Magnet without his helmet is from Tumblr user effkaybros, who did a ton of great artwork. This picture became the basis for Nico's helmetless design and also helped convince me to work on development of his personality more. Which of course made this chapter much more painful to write than it would have otherwise been, when I did get around to it.
- It was after writing this chapter—like most, it was written several days in advance before it posted—that I decided that Roll had given Nico his nickname.
- This is the first instance we see of a fight of a 3rd-gen DWN from start to finish, and the only one of those which is in first person. A studious reader might notice that Magnet never runs his combat program. This is intentional. The 3rd gen was programmed differently than the 2nd-gen; Wily learned from his mistakes, especially through the glitches that Crash and the Blue Menace had. (He never anticipated that someone might choose NOT to run a combat program in the face of such danger, though.)
- I wanted to show the effect of a super-effective weapon against one of the 3rd-gens, but the Menace hadn't fought Spark yet. So instead I had him take one of Elecman's old power capsules from the storage in the lab before going to fight Nico. …I later realized that this had some really unfortunate implications, but to be fair to Mega, he thought that Nico had been emotionally using and possibly physically hurting his sister.
PART XX- I realized that Cardinal would need a lot of supplies in order to repair his brothers, so I decided he would just go and clear out Wily's inventory. As a result, he really does have a lot of supplies; blueprints of most of the Robot Masters, multiple power capsules from all three gens, discarded/unused armor pieces and just bolts and wires and such in general, on and on.
- He was only able to do this because of his very human-like appearance and the fact that Wily had given him access codes to get into the lab. He disguised himself as a moving van person and just… made off with the supplies.
- When Cardinal repaired his brothers, he made sure to make them more human-like where possible. He did this partially because he was going off what he knew best—his own design. This worked somewhat, but not entirely. The reason Cardinal knows so much about repairs is because he's had to do self-maintenance for years, and he studied files from the database during that time. He can't build robots of his own, but he could certainly be considered a medic.
- Due to being repaired from bits and pieces, Siam and Nico (and later Speedy) would have sections of mis-matching armor plating. Cardinal didn't really have the time, supplies, or equipment to do much more than that.
- Cardinal explains his vision for a peaceful future, once again bringing up that theme of a possible robot society. I find this theme more interesting than some of the plots of the later MegaMan games. It's entirely possible that Cardinal won't end up being as involved with Mega's adventures in this timeline as Proto was for the games' timeline.
- It ought to be noted that they still have all the extra supplies from this escapade, and now they also have the blueprints for all of their dead brothers. This does open up the possibility of rebuilding a few of them in a later story, such as Jaden—at the moment I don't see this likely, given Speedy's thoughts on the matter. Although it would be very much like how Speedy was repaired (which is far different than using a backup copy of the memory), it does open the door to the controversy of backup copies more than he likes.
PART XXI- Ugh. This part was originally going to be in Ch. 12, which is why the fight with Nico had to be altered to have Elec's weapon instead of Spark's. It also didn't have more of a motive besides "SUFFER >8|". This changed, thankfully, though it's still very harsh.
- This is probably the first we really see of the Menace's expression of regret for what's going on. It should be noted that while he is a very dangerous enemy, he isn't sadistic. His personality really became less optimistic and childlike after his fight with Speedy and reading Speedy's journals—he began to feel haunted by guilt. Speedy catches on to this and feels terrible, and ends up running away because he can't handle his own guilt.
- This was going to be much longer at first, with depictions of every fatal/deadly fight between the RMs and the Menace. This was ultimately removed because it got VERY visually repetitive; there were 14 entries. It'll be included in the deleted scenes, though—I didn't write it all out for nothing. The Dead Have Names.
PART XXII- One of the few third-person narratives. I did this because there were just too many groups of people doing different things all at once for it to work otherwise.
- Originally Cardinal was going to break in with Siam and Nico, but I changed my mind and had him go off to head off the Menace instead.
- The sense of surreal urgency is really strong here. The same strange "sudden" trust crops up again. This time, though, Speedy is actually quite familiar with Nico. And since Speedy trusts them and Shadow trusts Speedy, Shadow chooses to trust the others.
PART XXIII- Cardinal does have a song for this. It's called I'm Not the Break Man. The Megas have performed it live, and it's commonly held that it's probably going to show up on History Repeating: Red. I'd really recommend looking it up on YouTube and having a listen a few times, it helps you understand Cardinal's character.
- This is the only real instance in which Cardinal absolutely loses his temper. It ought to be noted this is after being replaced and nearly dying once, living as an exile for years, witnessing over a dozen fights to the death, and being told to his face that he is of no importance to anyone.
- Cardinal does fire at his brother, but he wasn't aiming to kill him—just to
maim him a little injure him enough to stop fighting. It ended up working.
- We also see Shadow's fight with the Menace. He's the only one so far to do so and do so silently. It ought to be noted that this incident and the repairs afterward made Shadow and Cardinal close friends.
- I had to reorganize this chapter many, many times. *Laughs* I knew kind of what I wanted to happen, but due to number symbolism, I had a hard time fitting all the action and the conclusion into three chapters.
PART XXIV- THE FINAL CHAPTERRRRRRR
- I decided to have this as the last "official" chapter because Shadow is the last DWN, and his serial number is DWN - 024. It is also meant to mirror IAtL, which had 12 chapters and a 13th very unlucky chapter.
- I considered having this part in third person, but decided to make it from Speedy's perspective instead. This was so he got more screen time and people would be able to make comparisons between how he was at the end of IAtL and how he was at the end of EoC.
EPILOGUE I- This was my last chance to use Snakeman pictures, so I stuffed as many in as possible.
- This scene really, really should be read while listening to Walk Away from Light.
- Viper was going to kill the Menace if he didn't agree to help out, and was getting ready to do so when Mega stabbed him in the neck. It is VERY important to consider the scenes in the following while reading: C.S. Lewis's The Silver Chair where the enchantress mesmerizes the heroes, the scene in The Return of the King where Saruman does the same, and passages from Genesis and the Gospels (temptation in the Garden and in the desert).
EPILOGUE II- Originally I was just going to have a one-part epilogue to make it a nice total of 25 parts. (Divisible by five and a quarter of 100.) I decided to split it into two parts due to the severe mood whiplash between Viper's last journal and the following scene. This also allowed me to continue the mirror, two-part system I had been using until then.
- I rewrote the outline for this part of the story a few times. It wasn't originally clear who would have survived or what they would do next.
- After finishing this, I didn't want to stop working on the story. That's why I ended up doing all these Bonus Features.
{BONUS FEATURES: Commentary II—Characters}SPEEDY- I would have liked to see where the Doctor found Shadow. Too bad that part didn't make it.
- Yeah, so… obviously this one was a lot different from my previous adventures. I didn't have a chassis for most of what was going on. It was pretty hard to survive, since I kept running into firewall this, firewall that. They kept treating me as a virus. And I guess I technically was, at that point? I'm lucky I got my chassis back when I did, though that came as a huge surprise. I thought Light had destroyed it.
- I had no idea that the Menace was there, when I was in the mainframe at L. L., Inc. Otherwise I would definitely have reacted. Really though… "Rock"? Seriously?
- Magnet—sorry, Nico and I didn't get along very well at first. That changed over time. I could tell he was different than my brothers and I. His combat programming was clearly much more fluid than ours.
- I never actually met Viper in person, though I did see him using the lab cameras. I can't say that hearing his death throws after Shadow stabbed him was something I can forget. If I hadn't seen Viper try to crush his power cords, I would have really questioned what I had just set loose.
- I… really wanted to go back to Texas, but Cardinal's convinced me that it might not be a good idea to go back to Redención just yet. Right now we're laying low. The two of us share leadership authority among the group since we're the oldest.
- This wasn't at all how I thought things would turn out, but I'm glad I'm not alone anymore.
SHADOW- No, I do not remember where I was originally built. Please stop asking me that question.
- Cardinal's visit came as a big surprise to me. I did not expect to be followed peacefully. We did not start off as friends, but I am very grateful to him for saving my life.
- Yes, I do have hair. No, I will not remove my hood. What does this have to do with the files? Does that mean the interview is over? …
- …No, I do not have anything else to say. I am still learning how to run my BetaEmotions program. It seems to be a prototype version—it does not work as well as the ones my brothers have.
SIAM & GEMINI- I suppose I was one of the lucky ones, not to get the full programming. Viper was very rude about that, though. —S
- For the most part, I narrate the chapters. But when I do make an appearance, yes, I use first person. It makes more sense to me than it would to you. —G
- My programming? It… is a little buggy, perhaps.—S
- The double awareness was experimental. But it is who I am. —G
- I get lonely when alone for too long. —S
- The fight with Viper and the Menace was nasty. Exploding was painful. —G
- I'm lucky to have survived, though badly battered! You know one thing I don't get? People seem to think I am such an effeminate sissy, a pushover. Ridiculous! I appreciate beauty, of course, and I prefer to take good care of my appearance. But you must remember that having clean, mirror-like surfaces really amplifies my power. —S
- It would be a very grave mistake to think that I am any less capable of doing what it takes to survive or to fight. —G
NICO- I guess my role was always… important. I almost wish it could have been for any other reason, though. I… really loved her, you know? I still do. Do I really have to talk about this?
- My time at the lab… okay, I can do that. I spent more time with Light than Wily, which might be why I was able to actually reject the majority of the programming. He upgraded my WhiteCell firewall. I must admit… the part that was downloaded was me being curious. I won't say it was a total mistake. Wily had bad intentions, but he was a superior programmer when it came to making robots with an AI&A program complex enough to approach free will. My decision-making capacities increased exponentially after that part of my programing was rewritten.
- I guess I became the conflict-resolution guy among us all after we ran off. I really do prefer to talk things out. I think that's why I did so terribly in my fight against… against Rock. I really wasn't trying to hurt him, just to make him leave me alone. But he was playing for keeps.
- Yeah, I changed my thoughts on Speedy as time progressed. I misunderstood his intentions at first. We're good friends now, though. But personally, I think he's still having memory glitches. Nightmares, basically. He isn't like what you read about in his journals, but getting shot to pieces tends to change you.
- Viper… I really think that his programming was faulty. I really do. I remember when he had first been built—he was a very quiet guy, not at all violent. Something must have gone terribly wrong when he got his updates. Personally, I think he might have had a virus from DWN - 009's AI&A programming.
- I think the field of robotics has gotten to the point where the more advanced AI&A systems should be communicating with the scientists as they move forward. There have been a lot of unexpected problems and consequences of the awareness programming. It might work better if they started treating us as more than dangerous toasters.
CARDINAL- I don't think that the idea of a robot society is unique to me, no. Viper's interpretation was disturbing, but it's a theme that I've seen run through most of our most advanced brothers.
- What was I doing when Speedy was alive? Uh. Hiding in Kansas City, mostly. You have to remember that after the first-gen Robot Masters were defeated, people thought of us as too dangerous to live. It got even worse after the Wily robots started dying. Airman was the worst. Speedy was lucky that he wasn't scrapped or turned in after that incident. Talking heads were just going on and on about how Light and other scientists were "playing God" and that it was WAY too dangerous. I can't say I disagree with all of what they said, unfortunately.
- Yeah, it took a while to get the others to trust me. But saving their lives helped a long way with that.
- *Laughs* Yes, I can do tricks with my bike. I don't usually, though. It wears out the tires faster.

{Rewrite Outline} (Since actually writing it out is going to take a very long time) Prologue: Thomas tries to analyze Quick, but fails. Quick dreams of running across an empty landscape.
Cardinal watches a meteor shower from the top of the depths of KC, only to see what looks like a falling star burn the sky in the east. Curious, he decides to investigate, wondering why it hadn’t been intercepted previously.
Main Story: Thomas visits Wily in prison some years later, and he tries to get Wily to talk to him. Wily gets mad and finally snaps that Light had always been better, had always lacked vision and saw any competition as a threat. Light rebukes this, only for Wily to remind him of Tobias, and how Light ordered the destruction of his own robots that he created. Light retorts that it wouldn’t have been necessary if Wily hadn’t reprogrammed them and made them dangerous.
Wily goes on a rant where he emphasizes that he wouldn’t need to reprogram anything if Thomas had just given them true freedom in the first place. He spoke at length about how the robots were afraid of Light, and that they hadn’t meant any harm—listing off Snow, Tobias, Bubble, Crash, and Speedy as examples. He ended by saying that Thomas had everything he could ever want—including a loving son—but Wily had everything taken away from him, and that he would never let the lives of his programs be in vain. This makes Thomas quiet, and leave in unhappy thoughts.
He comes back later to apologize to Wily, which takes the latter by surprise and makes him actually listen. They talk about their dreams and of their college days, when they were best friends. Light asks him why he hadn’t trusted him enough to just tell him about Elec in the first place, and Wily replied that Light wouldn’t listen to him—kept putting him off—and that Light’s tendency to reprogram sons that didn’t do as he wanted was well known on record, and that he thought he had no choice since he couldn’t change Light’s mind—that he had even reprogrammed his favorite son. Light bristled at that but ended up admitting that he didn’t know how to fix Rock’s combat program, that all he ever wanted was to advance the field and live out the dream. This takes Wily by surprise, and he asks what Light plans to do next. Light sighs and admits that he’s not sure, but that he’s noticed Rock has been getting more and more weary over the years, and he wishes he could make things up to him. He goes on to say that Roll still seems to miss having Elec around, and laments that stopping Wily’s plans had also meant that Roll lost most of her brothers. Wily asks after a while if Light would do things differently if he had the chance, and Light replies “absolutely”.
Thomas comes back to visit Wily again when the latter catches pneumonia, and the two of them talk while Wily is in a prison hospital bed. Wily apologizes to Light, talking as if he is dying, admitting that he would do things differently if he had the chance, too. That he never meant for the DLNs to cause any harm at all, that he only wanted to protect them and chose the only way he thought he could. That he had been very angry and hurt by his loss, and that he just wanted to prove that the dream was possible, that it could be done. He says wearily that he’ll never get to fill their promise, that he’ll be gone before he gets a chance to make things right. Light protests that, and tells him not to talk like that. Wily points out that people blame /him/ for what happened in Monstropolis, and that he’d be in prison for life, and neither of them were getting any younger and he had always had bad health ever since the accident. Thomas says that maybe Wily could get out for good behavior, but Wily laughs at that. (“That’s rich.”) He sighs, saying that he just wants to sleep.
The next time Light visits him, Wily is even worse. He brings Rock and Roll with him, though they hang back in apprehension. Light tries to reason with Wily, saying that the friend he had known—and even when that friend became a rival—would never have just given up. Wily replies that was when he thought he could make things better by building the dream, but that everything he tried was seen as aggression. Light says that there is still a chance, if Wily really had turned over a new leaf—that he would help him out so that he could be free again, and they could finish their promise. Wily says that Light will never be able to replace his lost sons, and Light says that if Wily gives up, he won’t get the chance to heal and bless the world with new ones. Wily says he’ll think about it.
In the next visit, Thomas is relieved that Wily is better, though the latter remarks that he thinks he’ll get sick again when he leaves the hospital at the prison. He asks Light what the latter is up to, and he mentions that he is building something for Rock—but that what he would really like is to make a peace-keeping robot so that Rock wouldn’t ever have to fight anymore. Wily remarks that it would take a lot of energy to power such a project, and Light asks what Wily would do. After a moment, Wily says that he would use crystals from meteor impacts to focus the energy more intensely, since Light prefers solar power. At this point, Thomas has to leave, but he seems excited.
It is quite a while before Thomas comes to visit again, but when he does so, he mentions that he got approval to build the robot, though he would need to make some more industrial constructs first. Wily seems disinterested until Light tells him that he’s having a lot of trouble with the coding, since he never really was any good at making combat-related programs. When Wily asks what he is getting at, Light tells him that he needs another robotic genius to make this project work, and that there’s no one better than Wily. He asks if Wily is interested, and Wily says that Light is crazy. Light shows him proof that he’s talked it over when he didn’t make any progress, and has convinced the right people that Wily’s the only one who can get the job done, and that they’re willing to place him on the project if he’s monitored at all times and has all his work checked by Light. Finally, Wily agrees.
-*-*-
Wily finds the long-forgotten chassis of Speedy in the labs, and he thinks that Light has tricked him and is just using him again. He asks to hook Speedy up and Light mentions he’s already tried it, but that he never could because he didn’t have Wily’s password. Wily frowns and says that it’s too bad, since Quick was one of his best works, and had very sophisticated coding. He notes that he might be able to salvage the design to make a very good industrial bot, however—under Light’s supervision, he explains an idea for Magnetman, who would be able to assist construction of such a large robot. Light asks him about his other ideas, and Wily slowly starts to explain the idea for Gemini as a lab assistant…
Nico wakes up, and the first thing he sees is Roll—the only girl in the room. He is fascinated by her, though he feels rather confused. Light and Wily talk to him about who he is, and he thinks on it for a while as more diagnostics are written. The night goes well, and the next day, he starts doing some tests. He’s puzzled, as the situation gives him deja vu, but he can’t figure out why. Wily and Light start spending less time on him, since they’re working on other robots, so Nico is sent out to run some field tests. He ends up spending time with Roll a lot since he’s not allowed in the lab while the Doctors are working, and she watches TV with him and teaches him how to bake. He finally gives Roll a horseshoe magnet as a present, which makes her blush and say that he should have a name. She gives him a name, and Nico thinks on how he’s never been happier in his life.
One night, though, he overhears Snake talking with Gemini, with the latter asking him what Wily has been up to in the mornings and warning him that Rock would hurt them in they ever got in trouble. Nico goes to ask Roll about this, and she convinces him otherwise—but admits the story of the previous two Gens, at which point Nico realizes that he’s having deja vu because of Speedy’s and Tobias’s experiences. Roll tells him not to worry, though, as once the peacekeeping robot was finished, Rock would never have to fight again.
Some time later, Wily’s first attempt to reprogram the robot masters goes awry when Speedy is accidentally awakened in the process. Speedy escapes into the Cloud, which he sees as and endless tormented void filled with fire and monsters. He finds shelter by spotting an icy fortress. He just barely forces his way inside and reseals it before the fire catches him. After wandering around, he starts to get the feeling that he’s not alone…
Wily’s second attempt to reprogram the robot masters goes wrong when Shadow wakes up during the process and breaks out. He’s confronted in the hall by Snake and Wily, but he delivers a killing blow to Snake and leaves as the sparks cause the oil leaks to catch on fire. He flees into the night, heading east for a place where he can lose himself in the shadows.
Meanwhile, the downloads for the others interrupted when the emergency forced them out of sleep mode, and Nico comes to keep Roll from the horrors of Snake’s acid-eaten corpse. Wily is taken to the hospital due to burns, while Rock runs off to confront the mysterious “intruder”.
Siam helps Light run a scan, after which Speedy is discovered. He remembers how Speedy died, despite having not ever been told, but also suddenly realizes that saying it out loud was a mistake. He talks with Nico that night about his worries, and decides to have his clone run a virus scan later that night when he is in sleep mode.
Later that night, he is abruptly woken up when Gemini disconnects him and he realizes he’s been reprogrammed. They try to escape the lab, but they run into Roll, who is trying to drag off a very disoriented Nico. Siam experiences a glitch in his combat program due to the incomplete downloads, and fires at Roll. He hits Magnet instead, and Magnet sends them out flying with a magnetic blast. Then Mega comes on the scene and they all scram.
Meanwhile, Shadow starts experiencing strange dreams of Speedy’s memories, of Speedy telling Cruz to “remember me” before going off to die. He realizes that he doesn’t have any emotion at all, not even fear, and notes that without fear, he won’t survive very long. He decides to find Cruz to see if he can learn more.
In the meantime, Nico and co. make their way to the ruins of Monstropolis. Nico walks through the ruins with dread, realizing for the first time just how decayed the world outside the lab is, and how they could very well end up with the same fate. The brothers talk over what to do next, and Nico suggests they just lay low for a while, until things calm down. He ends up having strange dreams of Monstropolis before it was destroyed, and makes his way to an old radio tower. He finds some old equipment and turns it on, but concludes that it’s not working, so he leaves. He walks into a conversation where he realizes that they had been reprogrammed, which was why Siam had attacked Roll. Alarmed, he realizes that Snake could do the same when he is repaired, so he runs off back to the lab to save her.
Nico comes in in time to stop an ambush from Snake on Roll. He privately tells the former to run off while he has the chance, which Snake only does when Rock shows up and fires on the two of them. Nico ends up forced to run off along with him.
When Viper reaches the group, he asserts his authority. Hardman is very disgusted that Viper didn’t fight fair, and Needle actively shows aggression, and a fight breaks out when Siam is dragged into it. Nico stops the fight, and suggests they try to find safety. Later, Nico sneaks back to talk to Roll, who begs him to come back. They’re interrupted by a sound, which turns out to be one of Viper’s Search Snakes.
Cardinal gets directions to hunt Shadow down. He decides he’ll do so to have the chance to step in before Mega interferes. He heads South, going to once again see Gonzales, knowing that the draw to that city was practically instinct for all of them at this point.
As this is happening, Shadow makes his way to Redemption, where he finds Cruz and Gonzales. He decides to follow Cruz. Before he can leave the town, though, he’s confronted by Cardinal. The two of them fight until Shadow runs off, leaving Cardinal behind as Cruz turns on the lights.
Cruz recognizes Cardinal, amazed and relieved that the latter is alive. When he asks what just happened, Cardinal tells him about how there was trouble approaching, and he wanted to prevent another war. Cruz shelters Cardinal for a while as they travel back home, with the former offering Cardinal a place to stay. Cardinal declines, and says he needs to leave and intercept Shadow before Mega did. Cruz tells him to be careful.
While traveling, Cardinal hears the distress signal that Nico accidentally turned on. He goes to investigate, and sees Nico sneaking off to see Roll, with Siam following behind. He mistakes Nico for Quick at first, and gets extremely worried when he overhears their conversation and the following confrontation. Realizing that Wily still had materials in the lab that could pose a threat if confiscated, he sneaks in and starts clearing out Wily’s belongings. In the process, he finds Speedy’s chassis, and realizes that Speedy must still be alive. He clears out quickly, taking his spoils to the border town, where he hides them in an abandoned building while the town is sleeping.
Shadow finds his way back to the town after Cardinal leaves. He becomes curious when he sees the computer equipment that Cardinal had set up, believing it to belong to Cruz. He powers it on and logs onto the database, waking up Speedy in the process. The two of them talk and Speedy convinces Shadow to head north and find Wily’s old lab, where he could help with the downloads. He also mentions that Cardinal is an ally, having saved his life several times.
Siam starts to become paranoid when he doesn’t hear back from his brothers one by one, asking Gemini to investigate. (GeminEye lyrics.) Gemini ends up confronting Viper, and is forced to run off. Siam panics when he realizes that Rock is closing in, but ends up trapped in a dead end of an abandoned amusement park’s house of mirrors. He sends out a distress call before going offline. He’s dug out by Cardinal, who then goes off to find Nico before it’s too late.
Nico, meanwhile, goes to talk to Roll again, to try to ask (on Siam’s behalf) what was going on. She spurns him, revealing Wily’s treachery discovered (along with the theft of Speedy’s chassis being blamed on Wily). He eventually leaves, numb, but is tracked down by Mega. He fights his brother over Roll and Wily, which ends in Rock going crazy and killing him in a fit of rage.
Siam digs Nico out of the rubble while Cardinal distracts Rock, and Cardinal warps the three of them to safety—though becomes exhausted in the process. While he rests, Siam helps repairs on Nico. He talks with them about getting Shadow back and stopping the war—as eventually people will come looking for Nico’s body—and they all take the truck to make their way up to Wily’s old lab, with Siam performing emergency repairs during the ride.
Shadow, Cardinal’s group, and Mega all arrive at the scene at the same time. Cardinal distracts Mega a second time while Siam and Nico go to do an emergency reboot of Speedy. Shadow runs off when he hears that Cardinal is fighting Mega alone.
Mega manages to hit Cardinal hard enough to send him flying back and stun him, but Shadow rushes in before Mega finishes him off. Unfortunately, Shadow takes a real beating, and Cardinal barely manages to intervene. He then runs off with Shadow, but realizes they won’t make it out in time, as he noticed that that particular wing of the lab was about to explode—so he warps them out just in time.
Cardinal takes all the boys on a trip to Kansas City, where he hides them in the Black Hatters for a while as they recover from the injuries. While there, they learn that Viper was defeated, and conclude that Mega will go after Wily next. They debate on what to do, with Speedy pointing out that the seal of confession was the only secret keeper they could really trust anymore. Cardinal reluctantly un-declines, and they (minus Cardinal) set out South. The Black Hatters wish them best of luck and give them disguises for the journey.
Cardinal goes to intercept Mega and Wily, overhearing Mega’s speech on the radio frequency, but is caught up in an explosion as the building collapses. His shield saves him from being crushed, and he warps outside before the ceiling collapses. When the dust settles, he goes in to where Mega was, and finds him offline, with Wily presumably dead. He considers leaving Rock there, but thinks back on how much suffering there had been already, and noted that he couldn’t really hurt Roll like that, as she had obviously suffered enough. He carries Rock back to Light Labs, telling him that Rock’s job would never be easy, but to not blame Light for that because Light couldn’t have prevented it (only a man). He overhears Roll talking to Light, and leaves Rock on the ground. Roll spots him leaving, very confused since she thinks it’s Mega until she sees her brother on the ground. However, Cardinal responds to her inquiry by saying to take care of Rock, and leaves his song for her to hear as he flies away.
Epilogue: Rock wakes up and freaks out. Roll gets upset as well. Later, Rock calms down and comes to terms with everything, and finally heads home.
Cardinal joins up with his brothers in the border town, and they hold a second burial ceremony for their fallen brothers. Afterward, they all hang out on the porch, and Cardinal ends the night by playing his song in full.
