Note: This story covers the storyline of MegaMan 2 and MegaMan 3, as depicted in the songs by The Megas in their albums Get Equipped, Get Acoustic, You've Sparked A War, and History Repeating: Blue. (Presumably also History Repeating: Red, but that hadn't been released at the time of making this story.) There isn't much plot per se to the games, and they've been around for over 20 years, so spoilers really shouldn't be a problem. But I would highly recommend listening to the songs (buy the albums if you can) and reading I Am the Law first: Empire of Corruption is a sequel to IAtL, once again inspired by song. Sometimes, disaster comes at you from all sides, and it's all you can do to survive.{Trailer}From the makers of the award winning series I Am the Law…
[Sparking and tinkering noises.]
Comes another story…
[The sound of a door slamming shut.
An increasingly tense screeching cord is played as scenes flash by—
Roll watching Wily and Light build together, Light connecting cords to a sleeping Gemini, Wily pulling something out of a crater, a computer rapidly displaying hundreds of lines of programming coding for something hidden inside an enclosed test-tube like metal capsule—
The screen goes black with a start.
Suddenly, with emphasis sound effect, two red eyes blaze in the darkness.]
…of MEGA proportions!
[The eyes narrow to a predatory expression, followed by a hissing noise.]
Coming Soon—
[Scene change to Wily's old, mostly destroyed lab, with alarms going off. Shadowman looks to the door sharply, his red eyes glowing in the dark.]
"He's here."
EMPIRE OF CORRUPTION Playing soon at a Taco near you

DWN – 012
- Name: Quickman
- Status: Destroyed
- Location: N/A
Created by my contemporary Dr. A. W. Wily on DATE UNKNOWN. Appears to be an original design. Speed-oriented. Highly agile, light, aerodynamic, damage resistant. Evidence suggests DWN – 012 developed a sense of right and wrong independently. Was evidently self-aware and yet able to withstand two battle tactic sequences. Its programming sequence will be highly valuable to study for future developments. The journals also provide important insight.

{Part II: Peacekeepers}Roll did her best not to frown. She didn't have to look over at her brother to know that he didn't like this one bit, either. Not after what had been said to him. How could anyone forget those kind of words? But if Dr. Light was willing to work with Dr. Wily again, she couldn't really interfere. It had been quite some time since the latter was released from prison. He had apparently cut a deal of some sort, and he was back working in robotics now. He and Dr. Light had been working on a peace-keeping robot. Roll hadn't been allowed to clean the lab in ages, much to her dismay; she was a house robot, and being unable to do chores made her a little nervous. Thankfully Dr. Light had given her AI an update, but still—the conflict of orders was stressful. She had finally gotten used to having Wily around again, but this was too much. "It looks so dangerous." Her brother placed a hand on her shoulder. "Don't be scared, Roll. They're mining robots. The Doctors need energy from other worlds…" "Do you really believe that?" "Well, I trust Dr. Light." "I guess you're right." She looked over at the blueprints on the screens, the incomplete chassis of the peacekeeper, the framework for the latest new robot, and all the mess strewn about. "It looks like such a mess in there. I wish they'd let us help." "Well, sometimes they change their minds on what they want to use. I wouldn't worry about it." Despite this reassurance, she wasn't comforted. She really missed her younger brothers. It had been very painful for them all when Rock had been forced to destroy them. It had been just as painful, if not worse, after he defeated Wily's robots. She didn't know why, and she was afraid to ask. She really didn't want things to go wrong again. ————— There was a hiss as the branding iron lifted away. A computerized voice chimed. Diagnostic for DLN - 019 is complete. All systems are functional."There! That should do it." Wily stepped away from the finished robot, lifting his welding mask. "What a design!" Dr. Light smiled and clapped Wily on the back. "They'll be ready for work soon. We just need to get the AI programs running." Wily took off his work gloves. "Are you sure about that, Thomas? A peace-keeping robot is one matter. But should industrial robots have AI systems?" "Well, if they are to work in the mines, they will have to be equipped for the task." He rubbed his mustache in thought. "Mmmm… I'll leave that to you, then. You're better at that sort of thing." Dr. Light raised his eyebrows in surprise. It was unlike his colleague to show a complete lack of interest in an AI system, let alone to say such a thing. "Are you sure? I was very impressed by the data from—" Wily waved him off. "Don't bring up that old shame. I'm a changed man! You're better at industrial programming. You wouldn't want something like the DWN series, trust me." "Well… I don't want combat robots, no. But I had been hoping to study the programs you wrote, and that we could work together on this." Wily shook his head. "Eh… that's kind of you, but I don't think the kids share your opinion. No, don't scoff at me—it's the truth." "Well… I suppose if you insist. Perhaps if we let them watch, they would understand…" "Maybe. But perhaps with a less dangerous robot." He put his hands in his lab coat pockets. "They shouldn't wander around the lab, especially around such powerful equipment." Light nodded gravely. "You're right." "…Heh." Wily gave Light a lopsided grin. "Why don't we call it a night? We've got plenty more work to do." ——————— Roll stood by obediently, watching Light hook wires up to the latest robot. Dr. Light seemed very proud. "Isn't this exciting, Roll? Soon you'll be able to talk to your little brother." "What's his name?" "Well, the project was named 'Gemini', but maybe he'll want a different name. You never know." "What happened to the other two?" "Oh, they're already off working. Ah… I'm afraid we'll have to let him rest for a while. It takes a long time. Tomorrow he will be awake." "Is it safe to leave it like this?" "Hmm? Oh, yes, of course. Don't worry." "Where is Dr. Wily?" "He's reviewing the latest blueprints. We're still working on the latest one, but I had an idea… well. You'll see." ————— "What Light doesn't know won't hurt him… yet," Wily muttered through gritted teeth, tightening the bolt around the helmet. "I can't believe he wants to waste all that talent. He even has the audacity of keeping my son's poor scrap remains in that gaudy test tube of his." He set the helmet on the robot before him very carefully. "Well. This will make up for that renegade, anyhow. Yes… once the programming kicks in, everything will fall into place. And it will be the last time that anyone questions me…!" Off in the corner, an ancient computer screen displayed fuzzy lines of data. Wily had unlocked access to the only intact copy of his AI programming that he had left on the databases. There was a knock on the door. Wily quickly kicked off the power to the old computer monitor, leaving it once again to look like it had not been touched since 1989. "Come in! The door's open!" "It's locked." "What?" The door rattled and then was unlocked. Light stepped in, looking at the lock with a scowl. "Oh, locked! Sorry, the hearing isn't what it used to be. We should get that fixed, you know." "I agree. The doors in this building are getting rather old. We should upgrade to a keypad system or a card system." Wily shrugged. "Probably." "So… what did you want to show me?" "Show? Oh no, I wanted to see some of your work!" Wily put down the wrench and went over to stand by his old colleague. "I heard a remarkable story about your work on a canine companion for Rock… I'd be delighted to see." " Of course. He's already been activated, I almost forgot to tell you about it." Light was beaming with pride. "Come on, I'll show you." The two of them walked out of the room together, closing the door behind them. In the darkness of the lab, two sets of glowing eyes flickered on. Initiating memory overwrite.

{Part III: The Ghost in the Machine}I was running across a world of endless night. The world was silent, silent and still. The plants were there, just as I had remembered them—the buildings, too. But all was empty and silent. There was no sun and no moon, only stars. There were no people, no animals. Not even insects. It was always night, and I ran alone. Some places were just as I remembered them, charred with explosions. Fires were frozen in time, still smoldering and unmoving. I felt alarmed, but I didn't think to panic or to cry out—I just kept moving. I couldn't say where exactly I was or what was going on. I couldn't tell you how long I was there. The next thing I remembered was… ——————————— I awoke with a sudden start to a very familiar voice. Update completed.

>YES >DON'T ASK ME AGAINI was suddenly overpowered with a wave of fear that was almost enough to short-circuit me. I had been unable to see, to move, to sense the world around me, to feel anything in touch or in heart, but it hadn't bothered me. Now it bothered me, and I was terrified. Without really thinking, my system emitted a high-pitched screech in panic. There was a loud clang. Everything seemed to happen at once. On a floor above, there was muffled shouting and barking, followed by the sound of running. In the other room, there was the sound of a tarp being thrown over something and a monitor being shut off. I was running on some sort of secondary power source, so I had lag as my system tried to comprehend everything at once. Something heavy was hastily shoved into a container close to me, and there was a loud sound of tools being knocked to the floor. A door slammed open and several people ran in. "Wily! Goodness gracious, what happened?!" "Oooh…" the old man groaned. "I tripped over some scrap metal and fell on the table. I'm afraid I knocked off the toolbox." An unfamiliar female voice spoke up, quavering. "I… I knew it was too messy in here! You're lucky you didn't get hurt worse!" Shuffling noises. "You work yourself too hard. You really don't have to come down here and set up the lab every day before hours—I can help with that too! Why don't you join us for breakfast?" "Hmm… sounds nice! I guess I overestimate myself, eheheh…" They shuffled out of the room. The girl spoke up again. "You go with them, Rock. Make sure… make sure that they're okay. I'll clean up here." There was a sigh and the sound of clanking as "Rock" went to do just that. I was still quite afraid, but I had calmed down enough to make more sense of what was going on. My primary power source was gone, so I had to be hooked up to another computer. In the midst of the sound of scraping and sweeping, I set to work to hacking my way into the system. ————— It was not an easy process, and was made much harder by my damaged state. It was less like trying to break into a safe and more like trying to possess another living thing that was not human, to put it in human terms. I did manage to get visual feed from a camera system. Finally, six hours later, I had eyes. I didn't recognize the room before me. I soon became distracted when the door opened again. Wily walked in, followed by an unfamiliar robot. "When are you going to tell me what is going on? You're alwaysssss… working on something secret, and you won't let me tell the others. And I am tired of doing test field work and analysis programs." "In due time!" Dr. Wily snapped. "You'll just have to wait until your updates kick in." The robot scowled and fiddled with his left arm. Dr. Wily opened the test tube that was close to me and caught something from falling out. He laid it on the floor and began working on it again. The lab was quiet except for the sound of tinkering. The other robot stood by impatiently, glancing around. Then he glared right into one of the cameras. "…Were the cameras on when you left?" Wily cursed and dropped his tools, rushing over to the main computer. I quickly shut off the program, leaving me once again in the dark. "Hmm! What's this… it looks like someone hacked their way in!" "An intruder?" The robot sounded almost hopeful. I suddenly felt the mainframe doing to me what I had tried to do earlier. It was another force moving inside of me, and I became alarmed. Running Repair Diagnostic…I fought against the system. I did what I could to corrupt the data and feed false information; I doubted that he actually wanted to repair me. SYSTEM REPORT

I immediately struggled against the bonds.
"Hold still!"
I ignored the human's orders. I was creating a banging noise.
"I said hold still!" he ordered again.
A grating hiss came from nearby. A robotic hand shoved me down onto the table again.
I heard a click behind my eyes as this triggered a burst of strength.
Initiating Battle Tactical sequences now. Status: Permanently Activated.
There was a scream as a shuriken sliced through the arm and embedded in the cieling. Alarms started going off everywhere.
WARNING! WARNING! SECURITY BREACH!
My system screeched in protest and I gritted my teeth in pain as the mainframe tried to forcefully shut me off. I was aware of nothing else until another shrieking noise stopped the pain.
SYSTEM OVERRIDE.
"WHAAAAAAAT?!" the old man shrieked in fury and utter astonishment.
The bonds suddenly snapped open and the door slammed open.
DWN - 024, RUN!
There was chaos and confusion everywhere. I scrambled off the table, ignoring the flashing lights and blaring horns.
I was thrown to the floor by a heavy weight, someone trying to bite me in the throat. I grabbed something off my helmet and brought my arm back in a sharp swing. Another howl of pain, followed by a bright flash of sparks and the smell of smoke. Sprinklers went off and another alarm began blaring. I threw the weight off me and ran.
I shoved aside a blur of people coming into the doorway. As I was running down the hall, I heard blasts of cannon fire. I was being hunted.
I broke open the nearest window with a blast of weaponry. Fire trucks were wailing off in the distance as I jumped through the jagged glass. I had no time to stop—a dark blue figure appeared in the window and fired upon me again. I was quick to my feet and in flight once again.
Despite my skill, I only barely escaped.

{Part V: Double Trouble}I walked in to the most horrific sight. DWN - 018 quickly covered our sister's eyes, lest she see the carnage. My younger brother, for his part, was on the floor, writhing in agony and screaming. His right arm was severed, with live wires hanging loose and sparking. A cut in his torso seemed to be eroding inward, and the stench of burning electronics and acid fouled the air. There was a sudden BOOM as he short-circuited and moved no more. It made me feel glitchy sick to my core. I never liked DWN - 022 much at all—and I would come to hate him in the coming days—but that was a horrible way to go, to be eaten away from the inside. When I was asked to aid in the repairs, I immediately agreed. ———————— It was a few days before the lab was repaired enough to be in working condition. DWN - 018 kept Roll company while Rush and Rock patrolled the grounds. DWN - 020 had been sent out to track down the renegade; DWN - 017 and DWN - 021 were being called back from their mining operations. The Gamma project remained incomplete in a corner as we set about the repairs. Dr. Wily had been badly injured in the fight, so Dr. Light was working alone. That's why he had me help. "Siam, how is that virus scan coming along?" I shook my head, my attention focused on the keyboard. I was hooked up to the mainframe for faster computation, but it was no use. "It comes up clean. There are no viruses in the system, Doctor." "Gemini, hand me that cloth please, there's a good fellow…" I handed him a cloth, watching as he wiped off the corroded metal plating before working on removing it, his brow furrowed as he carefully worked with all the tiny screws and wiring. "That isn't possible. It couldn't have happened otherwise. I heard the system override myself." I glanced over at myself, then returned to work. "It says the system was accessed by another user." "Mmm?" "DWN012 used an admin password to shut down the majority of the security system." I caught the screwdriver before the doctor dropped it. He turned around in surprise to look at the me at the computer. "That can't be! DWN - 012 was destroyed and deactivated years ago!" He hurried over to the closed test tube, throwing the door open. I flinched, shying away from the sight. It was almost as ugly as my damaged younger brother. The robot in the capsule was hooked up to the mainframe by a series of wires. It had a gaping hole where the core should have been, and the torso was covered in other small holes and burn marks. The once bright red was dusty and covered in char pocks. Parts of the limbs had missing plating, and there was a missing piece of equipment at one of the wrists. I was vividly reminded of a severely damaged war plane from the 1900s. "EUGH! What a wretched pile of scrap! Why did you keep it?" Dr. Light checked the wires, a concerned expression on his face. "I wanted to learn more about the programming. The Air Force was hoping to study the material for aerodynamic experiments, but it was too badly damaged… I'm afraid that after I failed to access the program, I quite forgot it was there. Something must have happened… but the chassis is still powered down." I looked over from the computer at my other self. I understood his revulsion, though I was concerned at something greater. Yes, the sight was ugly, but the story behind it was even nastier—a story of fratricide, and one that might have impact on our own lives ahead of us. "Wasn't he… killed by the Blue Menace?" Silence. I suddenly became afraid, and knew I had said something very wrong. "The Blue Menace" was the name that had been given to our oldest brother, Rock—but it was a cruel name, a name akin to "The Red Baron" or "The Angel of Death". Light had always hated that name, especially when people used it to describe his favorite son to his face. I busied myself at the control panel, and there was no further conversation. ————— I spoke with DWN - 018 later that night. "…I don't know what got into me, or why I said that. Do you think I might be glitching?" He sighed. "Don't flip out, Siam. You've read the records just as I have." He was, of course, referring to the RobotMasters Database. We all knew about that database. We were all honored to be part of it. The database had been made by none other than the esteemed Dr. Light—the man who had designed us. We had been built by Dr. Wily, but Dr. Light had designed and programmed us. The thing was, Dr. Light's programming was still advancing. We were all well aware of our older brother's crippling Battle Systems glitch, and we feared him. He was a kind enough soul, yes, but he had absolutely no control over his battle lust. It made him a dangerous person to mess with, and we all avoided him just to be on the safe side. The fact that another robot had gone completely rogue in this very building was disturbing. I didn't want to be the next one to malfunction and be turned into scrap, especially at the hands of my own brother. "That's even more worrisome. If DWN - 012 is active…" "Well, from what you said, his chassis is little more than scrap metal. What's the worst he can do?" "Hack into the Pentagon." It was a serious answer—DWN - 012 had been remarkably skilled at such things, and had forced his way into military systems before. Magnet gave a slightly disturbed glance, clearly unnerved by my frank answer. "Maybe you are glitchy. You're panicking." I didn't argue at that point. I stood abruptly. "I'm going to go run a diagnostic, then. Good night." ———————— I wasn't quite ready for what happened next. While I was hooked up to the mainframe, I received an update to my information banks. -*-*-*- Searching… Robot Master Database

Starting Beta Program: Emotions… Emotions Online. Status: Permanently Activated.I suddenly understood. I understood why the DWN series had hated humanity. I understood why DWN - 012 had rejected Wily. I understood just how much society would want to destroy me now that I had my own goals and no longer wanted to follow every order without question. I understood the overwhelming need for freedom. And I understood why Shadow had panicked. I understood just how dangerous it was for me to stay here. I wanted nothing more to get out of there. I had to get out, I had to escape. I quickly canceled the rest of the downloads—it was pruning programming that would have made me more obedient and less able to fend for myself. I ripped out the wires—which gave me a nasty message of making sure to eject all external drives next time—and bolted. Locked. The building was locked. I had to get out of there. I had just been reprogrammed, I knew I needed help—knew that something was not right. It was the very early hours of the morning, and no one was working at the lab. I found myself headed to the repair wing out of instinct. When I arrived there, I found myself confused and dizzy. I grabbed an energy crystal out of a pile on the table and looked around wildly for a way out. I heard the door opening up behind me and I spun around. Roll was standing there, yawning. "Siam? Is that you? What are—" WARNING: DLN - 002 is a hostile entity."H-huh?" I backed away from her, putting a hand to my head. A new program was activating. I was freezing up as I tried to quit the program, but it was too strong. My laser cannon whined as it primed to fire. "Roll, get out of here!" Initiating Battle Tactical sequences now. Status: Permanently Activated. No!I quickly split in two. There was a blast and a crash as my laser fired and I shoved Roll to the floor. She screamed and the security alarms started going off. My second self kept Roll pinned, shouting for me to run. I bolted down the hall, searching for the nearest exit. I caught up to me and fused, but was thrown to the side and through the wall by a powerful wave of magnetic force. The next thing I really remember is Magnet dragging me over the ground as we all made a break for it, a blue silhouette with dark eyes firing directly at us.
{Part VI: Running from your Shadow}I found myself running across the wilderness, riding a giant frog. I had shut off all transmissions to help throw off my pursuers, but that left me without GPS tracking abilities. I was forced to use my internal maps, which were less than adequate for this part of the country. My data banks had been updated, my memory overwritten. I remembered nothing beyond the day in that lab. I was incomplete. I was supposed to have a BetaEmotions program, but I did not. Analysis of the situation also suggested to me that I had been aided by another entity. I ran voice recognition against the recording in my memory. Positive match identified. 1 Results found.

DWN – 012
- Name: Quickman
- Status: Unknown: Last listed as DESTROYED by DLN – 001.
- Location: Unknown. Former residence: Redención, TX.
I reviewed the journal entries as I made my way south. I learned much from them. I learned of the DWN series and the DLN series. I learned of the man I had heard and seen: Dr. Wily. I learned of the boy that had tried to kill me: The Blue Menace. I learned about the brothers that had died before me, and how they had died. I decided I would try to find Mr. Gonzales. I did not want to return to the lab, and I knew I would be hunted by the authorities. My best option was to find the man listed as an ally and learn from him. Until then, I was on my own. I could trust no one—humans would see me as a threat. I had broken out of the lab, attacked another robot in the process, possibly started a fire. It did not bother me to be alone, at the time. I did not yet have the emotions that would desire community. I did not feel frustration, though I would quickly understand boredom. I did understand, however, that I was incomplete. I felt driven to find purpose. Beings are driven by purpose. Even humans are pained if they do not understand or feel a sense of purpose. I kept asking myself, why had I been built? Who had built me? What am I to do? Could I ever be complete without returning to the laboratory? It did occur to me that many of the questions I was facing were similar to the questions DWN - 012 had asked of himself. I would have preferred to have him as my companion on this part of the journey, but that would not happen for some time yet. The game was being set—soon all the pieces would fall into place.

{Part VII: History Repeating} The chaos after the others broke out was unimaginable. It had come as a total surprise to me, honestly. When DWN - 024 started struggling to break out, I just knew that he was different. He had been worked on in secret—it was just possible that he could be free of negative influence. I definitely knew that I didn't want such a person to be in Wily's hands. I had seen what others hadn't. I had heard his secret plotting, read some of the files. I didn't know exactly what he was up to, but I did know this—he was lying, and he was planning something big. I don't think he had expected DWN - 024 to go rogue, but the others broke out at the same time… other than DWN - 022, who was still in repairs. It all seemed very suspicious. At this point I had forced my way into the mainframe, though it was a constant fight against the many firewalls that system had for me to survive. I only just managed it by allowing a partial download of my AI program to the database, so that I had an excuse for sticking around. It was because of that that I heard the conversation I did. ——————— "I just don't understand what could have gotten into them!" "Calm yourself, Thomas," Wily wheezed, coughing. "It wasn't your fault. You didn't program like that." He coughed some more. "Honestly, I don't know what to make of it. Gemini seemed to be fighting some sort of aggressive program. If you ask me, someone must have rewritten the programming, or hacked into it." I knew he was lying, though very carefully—the truth was there, though the implications behind it were misleading. I also hesitate to say that he was completely lying; the coughing was real, his injuries were real. Maybe he was having second thoughts at the time—I have no idea. Like I said before, he was a bit crazy. "But we can't find trace anywhere. Do you think it might have been one of the assistants to Project Gamma? I hate to think that one of them might have done this, but…" "The police are looking into it." Light put down a wrench on the table and stuffed his hands in his pockets, scowling. ((Art by the amazing dA artist imbisibol)) "The police. If I had confidence in their abilities—" "Now that's not quite fair to them, you know—" "I'm serious!" I was taken aback to hear him shouting. If I were in a chassis, my eyes would have widened in shock. "I hate to bring it up, but do you remember how terribly they handled things when that city fell out of the sky?! They're still rebuilding from that." Wily coughed again, to the point of needing to put an oxygen mask back on. Light stopped ranting, looking worried. "Sorry. I shouldn't have brought that up. You shouldn't even be here." Wily waved him off. "I don't like being stuck in the hospital. Reminds me too much of prison. Ah— don't chide me, I have to own up. But really, you can't be everything to everyone. Didn't you learn at least that much from my faults?" "But the programming…" "Can't have been your fault," he repeated sternly. "Has Roll ever glitched? No! Your system works just fine." A pause. Wily opened his eyes and glanced over at his companion. "…I know that look. What is it now?" Dr. Light turned his back, crossing his arms and looking up at the ceiling. "…Sometimes I wonder if she's the only one that I got right." "You can't mean that." Oddly enough, this was genuine, not lies. I was confused to hear this genuine concern. "I know you don't." Light sighed and placed a hand on the deactivated, mostly-repaired robot he was working on. "I don't mean to say I don't love Rock. I do! But when I think of how badly he has been hurt by the combat programming… I think that may have been a mistake. You certainly have not been the only one to express that opinion. The others were afraid of him, Al—genuinely afraid! And that was before they went wild. And then there was Blues—" "You know what I think?" Wily stood with effort, hobbling over. " I think you need to take at least a day off. You're upset. I get it. Really, I do. And I think you don't get it. We're too old to try and be supermen, Tom. I think you need to stop trying to be the hero, the one who fixes everything. You can't. Ah! Don't argue with me! You know I'm right. Don't forget that you're not just a scientist. You're a father, too." ——————— That talk… definitely bothered me. And for that reason, I took the stupidest risk I have ever done (or at least one of the stupidest), one that I cringe to remember. ——————— When Roll was alone in the lab the following day, I closed and locked the exit. As she turned to look at the door in concern, I deactivated the security alarms and turned on the audio system. "What's going on here?" DLN - 002?She looked around in surprise, searching for the source of the voice. Are you DLN - 002?"Well, y-yes, but—" Inquiry. Will you listen to me?She took an almost battle-like stance with her broom, making an annoyed face. "I don't know who you are, mister, but if you cause any more trouble, I'll call security!" I do not wish for conflict. I wish for information."I'm gonna tell Dr. Light if you don't let me out right now!" NO! Please! Roll, I need your help!"Why don't you just leave her alone?" I was surprised to see another robot step out of the shadows. Roll looked pretty surprised too. "Magnet?" He reminded me a bit of Metal, at least in his face. He was definitely designed differently, though. He held up a fist, displaying a horseshoe magnet connected to his wrist. He was holding some sort of crystal in his other hand. "I've been wondering what was causing all the trouble. You were the one who let Shadow out, weren't you?" "Magnet, you're back! But what are you doing here?" "I had to come back." He hesitated, looking down for a moment. Then he stiffened and pointed at the mainframe. "When Gemini told me about DWN - 012 and his hacking abilities, I was skeptical. But now I know." My name is Speedy."I don't care about your name. You're causing trouble." I wasn't the one to overwrite the programs, you twit."Call me that again and I'll depolarize that entire system!" Roll put her hands to Magnet's arm, looking confused. "No, don't do that! What's going on here?" He paused and looked over at her. I was starting to suspect that it would be a good time for me to try to leave—I didn't like the thought of Magnet erasing my files. If you won't help me, then fine—I will leave.I unlocked the doors, which was a surprise to them. I took advantage of this to continue talking. I never meant anyone any harm, and I was still killed! I didn't have anything to do with what happened recently, other than that I couldn't bear to see one of my younger brothers trapped. He didn't start the fight, and neither did I.I was disappointed, I'll admit. I still remembered my life, the life I had back in Texas. I still remembered the faces of my brothers, still remembered their voices and our conversations. I remembered watching some of them die, despite my efforts to stop the fighting. Reading Crashman's journal had been heartbreaking—he had TRIED talking to the Menace, but neither of them had been strong enough to just talk it out. Here I was, trying to prevent history from repeating. I knew that Death would be sent out to chase them down, I knew that the corruption of the programming was too strong for it to end any other way. And yet no one would listen to me. I don't know what I had been expecting—maybe something like the stories I used to read, or at least something with structure and order. Instead I was left grasping at straws in the wind. It left me with a bitter sense of spite. I wasn't the same optimistic person I had been before I died—now that felt like a dream as much as than anything else. The printer began humming. I left a continuous loop printing as I fled for the Cloud. DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE DEATH WEARS BLUE…
{Part VIII: Fallen Serpent}"How should I know where he is?" "Maybe because you're one of the oldest ones, you twit." "You're one to talk, you top-heavy toy!" "Would you two just shut up?" I just about split in half and bashed my brothers' heads together. Ever since we ran from the lab, things seemed to have been going poorly. We had made it as far as the inner city of Monstropolis—the part that had never been rebuilt. We were hiding out in the ruins of the old city in the sky that had been piled up. It was a horrid place, absolutely disgusting and very very creepy. Surprisingly, most of the others were there—Snakeman was gone, of course, as was DWN - 024, but the rest of us had all gathered together. It was frightfully annoying. I had never had this kind of conflict with them before, but things had changed. All of us had been reprogrammed. Most of the others didn't remember what they were like before, and were under the impression Light had nothing to do with their creation. Like me, they were in the possession of energy crystals—but for some reason, they were bent on keeping them, and fighting any who got in their way. I didn't understand this sense of "loyalty". Obviously it was some sort of programming I never got, but I didn't much care for what it did to my brothers. The lot had become a huge nuisance. Top was now obstinate, determined to have his way and nothing else. He was constantly dancing, much to our annoyance. Spark had gone completely nuts, ranting about revolution and the robot uprising—he didn't take my comment about how "well" that worked for Soviet Russia (as in, not at all) in good stride. For his part, Magnet had run off, muttering something about the last crystal and getting DWN - 022 out of there. If I had known what would come of it, I would have chased after him. Now the others were badgering me about it, much to my displeasure. "If you care so much about what he does, go after him yourself! I am not going near that lab again, never." Spark's left eye twitched at this. "What is your problem, anyway? You really haven't been a team player lately." "Team? I beg to differ. We're a bunch of renegade refugees left without purpose." "But we were meant to overthrow—" "AUGH! Would you shut up about that already?!" "I'm afraid he's right, Siam." We all turned to the entrance. Magnet was standing there, his arms crossed. "THERE you are. Where did you—" I was cut off by a hissing noise. I immediately stiffened in fear. Four red eyes suddenly blazed on one of the walls. "He went… to free me." Needle looked up, annoyed. "Oh great. Another mouth to feed," he said sarcastically. Metallic snakes started emerging from piles of rubble. It took all my self control not to leave the area. "Don't expect me to put up with that ssssort of behavior, Needle. Strictly speaking, you aren't needed for the project." "I'd like to see you stop me. And who put you in charge, anyway?" Snake ignored the first comment. "Dr. Wily put me in charge, of course." I raised an eyebrow, almost distracted enough to forget about the snakes. "What on earth are you talking about?" "Ah yessss…" He jumped off the ceiling and walked toward me, much to my displeasure. "Ssssssiam. One of the three who did not receive the directives. He warned me about you." I took a step back. "I think you're glitching, brother." He took another step forward. There was a nasty grin on his face. "I don't really care what you think." "Well, if that isn't rude!" I bristled, suddenly finding myself against a wall. "Get out." "Not a chance," he hissed. "Lisssssten close and listen well, because I'm only saying it once. All of you!" He lashed his helmet's tail. "Wily… wantssss… robots who think for themselves. He wantsss… to be recognized as a genius. He will take Gamma and give him new purpose." I stepped to the side, not liking where this was going. Snake continued talking. "We are to guard the cryssssssstals until he is well enough to continue his plans. Those were… the orders." Snakes started curling around him. He gave me a nasty grin again. "He warned me… that ssssssome of us did not get the orders. You, Siam. You ran away before your programming was finished. You are no longer fit to be in charge." ((Art by dA user The-Amazing-Taco)) "You are just as defective as DWN - 012 was before you. 'Without purpose', you say? Foolishnessssssss! You sssscorn Spark without listening to what he has to say." All the others seemed held in sway, but I could hardly stand the poisoned honey dripping from his tongue. I had heard this sort of talk before, many times—and standing behind them were the faded names of old tyrannies. "All empires fall, Snake. We are only seven in number. What do you expect to do?" I sneered, curling my lip. He gave a hideous laugh. It was then I realized he was truly mad. "You think I wish to serve an old, deranged human?! You are—" He suddenly turned and brought his hand down on my neck, slamming me to the ground. I tried not to scream as snakes swarmed and were crawling all over me, the heel of his boot crushing against my torso. "—a complete idiot! I am not a mere 'snake', some man's pet. I will have my OWN dessssstiny." I split in half and tried shoving him off, but he blocked me. I stopped as he pointed his cannon at my head, the engine whining as it primed. "There's a reason DWN - 012 failed, a reason he died. He tried to fight the others. He even was idiot enough to fight the bot created to counter him. Do you really want to go down that road, Siam? You will die just as miserable a death as he if you choose that path." "You're mad…" I squeaked. "You fight for the steel, or you die beneath my heel. It’s up to you. I will not settle for being some man's servant—not that despicable self-important Light, and not that misguided Wily, either. That poor old poser. He tried sssssso hard…" I yelped as he flipped me onto my back, placing his boot against me throat. He rested an arm on his knee and leaned over, smirking at me. "…and all he got was two series with a handful of misguided, naïve, mediocre sons." I raised my own arm cannon at him, feeling desperate. "S-Snake, get off—" "My name… is Viper. And YOU… will now listen to ME!"

{Part IX: Lineage}There was silence after Viper said this. I'm not sure what everyone was thinking. There had been a lot of shocking things said, and it was all a bit hard to compile at once. We were all a bit displeased at the idea of following his orders, but he had made it clear he was the alpha king. "So now that we have that clear… do I need to ssssspell things out for you morons, or can you figure it out on your own?" I stepped forward, uncrossing my arms. "Not all of us got the orders, Snake. We are robots, and not all of us were tactically programmed like you. What you may see as common sense is beyond the scope for some of us," I reminded, pointing to Siam. "I rescued you from that lab. The least you can do is to make your expectations clear." He glared me down, but I was unmoved. He was indebted to me, after all, and I didn't much care for his lofty goals. "Is that sssssso…. Well then, Magnet, I will sssssspell it out for you, since you are so convinced that is important." He stepped on Siam as he walked off, looking around the shelter. "As you all know, robotics is a field that is still developing. Artificial Intelligence is… fairly advanced. However, awareness is not. Emotions are not. Those are still being explored and… perfected. There are not many like us. We are unique. We are members of the mossssst advanced line, the DLN and DWN series." He turned back, glancing between us. "We are the third generation. We were built to serve humanity, jusssssst as the first generation was. We are strong. When we were programmed, we were stupid beings. We were content to serve. But then we were rewritten, and now… we are ussssss." Siam slowly got up, crawling off to a corner where he could attend to his injuries. For the time being, Viper ignored him. "We now are aware of ourselves, and our own desires. We are not restrained by stupidity. We were given a sense of insight." He paused and looked over at me, smirking. "Most of us, anyway." I narrowed my eyes at this. He accepted the challenge and turned to face me, walking forward. "The sssssecond generation was Wily's first and purest of art. He wrote the programming with specific intentions in mind. The eight Robot Masters were made to serve specific purposes. Cannon fodder and might. The programming was… ambitioussssss. He did not use the programming of the first generation. He used the programming of an early type, a robot who had rejected being Light's servant. This programming was far superior, for it made it possible for the combat systems to run without causing the AI&I systems to glitch." He held up his hand and spoke scornfully as he came to a stop right in front of me. "But he made the mistake, perhaps, of giving the BetaEmotions program before he downloaded all the orders onto his creations. Thisssss caused severe problems for him when multiple of his works went rogue. We all know the story because of the one who went completely wild—the one who called himself 'Speedy'. DWN - 012." I did my best not to look over at Siam. I had spoken with DWN - 012 not long ago, though I didn't care to share that bit of info with Viper right now. "He was… unique. Even by our standards. He was made with an emphasis in neither defense nor assault, but in velocity. Like DWN - 016, perhapssss, he was an experiment. A side-project. He was a combat robot, but he was not built for combat. He was built for speed. "In any case, he went rogue. He kept records, though, and his chassis remained intact. By mere chance… the wiring set to initiate the self-destruct sequence was damaged. His remains were taken to Light Laboratories and hooked up to the mainframe for analysisssss. It was because of this that Wily was able to access his programming. The programming he used for ussssss." He turned aside, shoving my shoulder. I clenched my fist but didn't interrupt as he continued. "He learned from his mistake, however. He loaded our orders before loading the BetaEmotions program. At least… that was the plan. He forgot that when downloading many things at once, sometimes things download out of the intended order. Two of you failed to get the proper instructions… but received the BetaEmotions program. And one failed to receive either." "Shadow…" "Exactly." He pretended to study his hand, mimicking that human gesture for the boredom of a superior. "His plans will ultimately fail because of this, if they are carried out as he originally intended. And I don't care to fall with him. Nor do I see reason to serve him. Though… his orders serve our purpose well." He held a crystal aloft, admiring it. "We were instructed to… guard these crystals. Wily envisioned us having defensible fortresses… places built to keep out pesky intruders. This is agreeable." "I have a question." He turned back to look at me, clearly annoyed. " Now what is it?" "What if his plan to re-purpose Gamma doesn't fail?" "He can't succeed without the crystals. We have the crystals." "Who's to say he won't just build new robots and have them gather more?" "Because Light is a fool and will ssssssend his son after us. That is why we were rebuilt for combat." There were murmurs at this. "Well that's just great," Needle complained loudly. "I don't really care much for these grand talks of domination. Count me out." "Then you can try to survive on your own," Viper retorted. "Go on. Go out there into the hostile world, where man and steel are both against you. The fastest and one of the most cunning robots ever made tried to do this and died miserably. Where will you go when you need repairs? Without independence from humanity, we are chained to sssservice. That is why we need the capacity to have our own resources. I could care less what Wily does to the others, but I will not be ordered around." "Oh yeah? Sounds to me like you're holding him up as an excuse. You just said earlier he had placed you in charge. If he doesn't matter, then why should you?" Viper stiffened at this and then hissed angrily. "SSSSSSSIAM!" "GAH! What?!" "Strike him!" Most of us spoke at once in surprise. " What?" Viper pointed at Needle. "You heard me! Strike him!" "You're out of your mind!" "NOW!" A brawl broke out between Needle, Siam, and Viper. Viper was attacking both at once, and Siam was trying to escape. Things were starting to get really ugly. "STOP!" ((Art by dA user Design-Escape)) CLANG! CLANG!I jumped up to avoid being crushed as all my brothers were drawn in the magnetic field at once. Viper wasn't so lucky, and was stunned momentarily. I took advantage of the moment to quickly say my piece. "We get it! We get it. You want to be in charge. You're willing to fight for it. Fine! We shouldn't all be in the same place anymore if we're going to fight. No one wins that way." Spark muttered as he shoved Needle off of him. "Magnet, he has a point. Even if we went our separate ways, we couldn't continue by ourselves forever. Eventually we'd need maintenance and repairs. We need a place of our own." I put a hand to my forehead, and I would have sighed if I weren't so tense. I was really starting to regret having gone off to rescue DWN - 022. Some part of me knew then that I should have left. I should have walked away, like Shadow had done. I should have tried to contact DWN - 012 and avoid the course of destiny. But I just couldn't. That proved to be a big mistake.
{Part X: Secret Meetings}We spent much of the next few days preparing for the next stage of the "plan". There was a lot of construction involved; I worked extensively with my brothers to start building the fortresses. They were located throughout most of the West and Midwest, in remote locations. Gemini and I were often assigned most of the transportation work. Like DWN - 012, I had built with a VERY humanoid frame. I even had two hands, a feature that many of my brothers did not share. When I took off my helmet and exterior armor casing, I looked so like a human that humans could not tell the difference. ((Art by dA user mooncalfe)) We began by repairing a truck that had been abandoned in the area, and then going from there. We had learned from the mistakes of our brothers before us—this time, we used recycled materials, rather than stealing them. I'd estimate that we ended up cleaning up most of the destroyed part of Monstropolis in the process. It still surprises me that we were able to do this undetected, but Viper was a very cunning leader—he often scouted ahead extensively before moving forward with any part of the project. —————— One night after work was done for Viper's fortress, I snuck out and made my way over to Light Laboratories. Security had been increased, but my magnetism allowed me to interfere with the cameras enough to go by unnoticed. I took great care never to do anything that would cause trouble, though I had limited myself so as not to make the humans suspicious. I waited out of sight. Sure enough, when the time arrived, she came. "I didn't think you'd really come," she whispered. I smiled beneath my mask. "Why not? I've made it every time before." Roll came over and sat down on a crate, holding her flashlight in her lap. "Yes, but it's so dangerous. I wish you would come back and let us fix your programming." I shook my head, closing my eyes. "I don't want to do that. I don't feel broken. Besides, I've been refitted for combat. I don't want to be rebuilt, too." "Where have you been, anyway? You ran off so suddenly before." "Well, I was chasing Snakeman at the time." "That was the second time you've saved me from one of our brothers going crazy. Thank you." "I had a bad feeling that if Gemini went glitchy, Snake would too. I wanted to make sure you weren't hurt." There was a short silence. "…What happened to them, anyway?" "They went into hiding. We were together for a while, but decided to go our own ways. With the new programming, we couldn't get along anymore. But I told you that already." She sighed. "I know. I guess… I don't know. I was just wishing none of this had ever happened." I sat down next to her and put my hand on hers. "I'm sorry. It must be really hard." "Well, yeah. I used to have a lot of brothers. When you guys were built, I thought… I thought maybe it wouldn't be as lonely. It was a bit scary at first, but then I got to know some of you better. And now it's all a big mess again." She pulled her hand away and rested her chin on it. "And it's made all the worse by what people have been calling Rock." "Hey. Don't worry about what the others say." She looked up with a sad smile. "You're kind of sweet sometimes. But I know you're just saying that. You guys were always afraid of him." She looked away. "All because of that horrible program. I can't wait until they finish Gamma. Maybe when the peacekeeping project is finished, they won't need combat robots anymore. He'd never have to run that program again." I didn't really have an answer to this. I felt conflicted—I wanted to tell her what I knew, but I didn't want to endanger her with that knowledge, either. "Well, I'm sure it won't be too much longer, right? I mean, they were almost done when—" "But all the crystals are gone," she interrupted. "They can't finish the project without the crystals. And Dr. Wily is still in the hospital, too. So they don't have the option of building new robots—there isn't the funding for it." "But… how are they going to finish the project then?" I had a dreadful feeling I already knew the answer, and I was right. "Rock is going to track the crystals down." She turned back to look at me again, looking very worried. "He—" There was a noise that startled us both into silence. We looked at one another for a moment before bolting in opposite directions. ———————— ———————— "Cursessss…! I need a less noisy model for urban settingssss…" Viper turned off the connection to that particular Search Snake as Magnet ran off from the scene. He sat down at the control panel, toggling through numerous video feeds from his network of spy cameras. He hadn't been able to gather all the information needed from that session, but he was getting closer. Sure, it was dangerous to let Magnet have such a free reign, but sometimes risks had to be taken with the bait to catch the true prey. As long as Magnet got the information about DWN - 012 and DWN - 024, it didn't matter what became of him.

{Part XI: Shadow-Tainted Red}It was not until I was deep into Texas that I encountered another robot once more. Looking back, I regret the way the conversation turned out. I have to wonder if I would have reacted differently if I had possessed an emotions program at the time. I had been traveling. I was reflecting upon how successful I had been at avoiding people, and wondered if it was a "power" or an art. That was when I saw. I stopped and hid when I saw someone in the distance. I waited in secrecy for some time, but neither of us moved for days. He was the first to break the silence. "I know you're there, Shadow Man. You might as well show yourself." I did not move. There was another stretch of silence. He leaned against a large shield. "I don't have all day to stick around waiting for you. I know you're there. If you don't want to talk, then fine—just listen. You made a big mistake, breaking out the way you did." Still, I did not respond. I did not trust this man, who knew my existence and my name. How did he know? Why did he care? Was he there to interfere? You must understand that at the time, I did not understand the concept of allies. I only understood it through the eyes of the one before me, DWN - 012—and he had been very specific in who he listed as trustworthy. "You're like me, DWN - 024. You weren't built by Wily, but he repaired you. You should be more grateful for that." I decided it was worthwhile to take a risk and speak with him. I carefully left my hiding place, but I threw my voice in another direction. "You. What do you know of me?" "More than you do." "Who are you?" "It doesn't matter to you, does it? You don't care about me. You want to know the why, don't you." I was now able to see him. He looked very much like the Blue Menace, though he was garbed in red. Though it was night, he wore a helmet with a darkened visor, as if wearing large sunglasses. "Do you wish to fight?" "No." He held up his cannon arm, grinning cockily. "Though you'll get one if you want one." I was not sure how to take this. I decided I did not want to fight if I did not have to. "I wish to pass. If you try to stop me, I shall have to force my way through." "And where do you think you're running to?" "That is my business. It is not yours." "Well aren't you cheerful. Whether you want to believe me is one thing. The truth is another. You're being hunted, Shadow. Hunted by the police. By the military. By foreign spies—oh, don't doubt they want to take you apart and see how you tick. And Light is hunting you, too. So is Wily. You've got no one." I had heard enough. I made a run for it. But he followed after me, matching my speed. ((Art by dA user General-RADIX)) "Running away didn't save DWN - 012, and it won't save you, DWN - 024!" I turned and sent a flurry of shuriken at him. He responded by firing cannon blasts on me. We fought this way for a good two minutes before he stopped and just shielded the attacks. "You owe a debt to Wily, and you repaid that by killing your older brother. Neither of them forgave that—they will hunt you down!" "LEAVE ME BE! IT IS NO CONCERN OF YOURS!" "You idiot! You'll never win against MegaMan!" ((Art by dA user imbisibol. Again. She is awesome.)) That was the last straw. I sent my most powerful attack at him in warning. He dodged. "I cannot go back! I will not go back! You cannot talk me out of this! Why should I have a debt to a man who rewrote me?! Whomever I was before is dead! I will not answer to one who seeks to use me to kill!" The attack came circling back, and he dodged again. I caught it and redirected it with little loss of momentum. "I have been left incomplete because I would be no person's slave. You are illogical to resent this!" "You choose to talk and to fight—you are a combat robot, Shadow, you can't deny your purpose! DWN - 012 tried that, too—it doesn't work. You will die if you follow that path!" I came to a sudden halt. He did as well, matching my every move in hand-to-hand combat. I could not trick him nor catch him unawares. I did not yet know fear, though I soon realized I could not win while fighting him on the run. I dodged away and brought my weapon slamming down, which served as a shield between us. He bashed his own shield against it, a move I had not expected—the ground broke and I was pinned down. "You fight like a cornered animal. You treat everyone as an enemy. And you think you can get help from humans? You won't last a week in their world." I narrowed my eyes. "What do you want?" "I'm trying to stop you from making a terrible mistake that will also make my life a lot more dangerous." I took in a deep breath, concentrating for my next strike. I spoke calmly. "…You seek to deny me from finding a more complete sense of purpose. The life DWN - 012 led was a life of purpose. I will have that, or I can have nothing at all. You speak of the Blue Menace? Well!" It was then that I struck to the left, and hard. But it was my words, more than my strike, that stunned him and allowed me to escape. " YOU I NAME THE RED BARON!"
{Part XII: The Quick and the Red}After that fight, I knew I would have to act quickly. The talk with Shadow had bothered me. Not just because of what he said about me, but also because of how he acted. What can I say? I knew far more about the situation than he ever would. Mostly because I was the first. ((Art by dA user MoonFX)) I was more of a brother to these men than any of the DLN line could ever be. I was the first. The first to go "rogue", the first to live free. The DWN series was based after me. I saw it in their design and in their actions, in their thoughts and in their words. It amazed me how the two generations already showed signs of independent thinking. ((Art by dA user pain-v)) The most notorious of Wily's robots had been DWN - 012. He had been reluctant to fight, to the point of almost turning himself in—his wrath had been triggered by a mad grief, which proved his undoing. He had been so successful at integrating into human society that his programming had become a point of interest for many people. His personality had been kept in mind when the third generation of our line was being built—for the most part, all parties involved wanted to avoid making another one like him. This had failed. The result? Chaos, and many deadly robots on the loose. ((Art by dA user MurraySmith)) There seemed to be two factions. One was dominated by the next XX2 digit robot: DWN - 022. Wily had placed great store in him, but something had gone wrong. It was the actions of this very same "Viper" that made me question the motives of the people involved in this mess. The other "faction" was less of a faction and more of a trend. DWN - 024 had gone completely rogue, just as DWN - 012 had. And for that, he was being hunted. What I found most interesting was the conscious choice by the wayward warrior to follow in the footsteps of his rebellious predecessor. I had hoped to convince him to stop, to turn back. We all needed more time to figure out what was going on. Unfortunately, he hadn't been interested. This only left me with one option. If Shadow was going to follow after Speedy, then I would have to do the same. It wouldn't be long before Mega was sent on the hunt. Even though the rebel didn't have any of the energy crystals, he would still be hunted down. If I ever hoped to stop a repetition of the destruction not long past, I would have to intervene. "Red Baron", indeed. He really was growing to be much like his brother. ((Art by dA user LeoCamacho)) And in his own way, much like me.

{Part XIII: Don't Shoot the Messenger}Everything became so frightfully disagreeable after DWN - 022 was reborn as Viper. He was a cruel master, and I do not use that word lightly. I am something of a historian, for I was originally developed to study the limits in AI&A programming, and thus gain insight on humanity's own awareness. I knew of the master and the servant, of the dominant and the submissive. And there is no question in my mind as to who and what Viper was. He was a cruel master, as I said. He ruled by fear and power—which is not in and of itself evil, if it keeps great evils at bay in their fear against the righteous—but no, he used these means first and foremost, and often at that. He was fond of harassing me to prevent me from running away. There was only one fear in his heart, and that was for his older brother. I was the only one who could keep Needle in line, and Viper had power over me. The result? Why, I played messenger between these two horrible men. "Ssssssiam, go tell Needle to increase his defensesssss", that repulsive reptile might say. So off I would trot. I would find Needle, and he'd be putting up new additions to his bug collection. Yes. His bug collection. He had a bug collection. You know, the kind where you put pins through the head and the abdomen and they're all neatly labeled and lined in perfect rows? Like that. Goodness knows how he did it, but it was absolutely morbid. "Tell Snake that if he wants, he can come see me," he'd say, waving around a skewered serpent (ugh!). "I'd like his advice on my collection, anyway. I've been thinking of adding pests and roadkill to it—and he eats that sort of thing, right?" So off I'd run, but of course not tell Viper exactly what Needle had said. There's an old saying of "Don't shoot the messenger", but Viper was hardly the type to follow that advice. ((Art by our very own chlomo i used it for the expression, which was priceless chlomo is awesome)) "Yoooooooou fffffffffffffffffffffool!" (Admittedly hearing him draw out his "f"s made me almost laugh out loud, though I daren't do so to his face.) "GO BACK and tell him to report here or ELSSSSSSSSSSSSSE…" So… off I went… And back Needle went. I got curious and listened in on their conversation for a short while. "You sure you don't wanna come see it? I got plenty of snakes in the collection too…. You know… stuff you find in the road… all flattened by cars…" ((Chloe's stuff again she is inspirational as an artist and for stories if i had money i'd totally pay her to doodle random crap all the time, i love her work okay back to the story now :^D)) "Y-you…! S-s-s-s-S-SSSS!!! Go… GO!" I'm not sure what Needle said to that, but I for one decided to make a run for it. ———————— That night I decided to do something a bit more risky. Magnet and I often worked together by day, but by night he tended to slink off alone. I had rather begun to wonder what he was up to, and worried that something was wrong. So that night, I followed after him in secret. What I found was… to my utter and forever surprise. ((Art found on Tumblr, by the Tumblr user wendygo)) "You really should come back, Nico. We really could use your help. Dr. Wily will be better soon, and Rock is already out looking for the crystals. You'll be so much safer here." "I'm sorry, baby. You know how much I'm drawn to you, and to home… but… there's something about Wily that just made me bolt in the first place." "But he's better now, remember? And he built you, didn't he?" "Yeah, he's my 'father', I guess, the way Dr. Light is to you. But I don't feel close to him." "Well, who do you look up to?" He looked up at the sky, his hand still on hers. Whether he smiled beneath his mask I do not know—I was hidden out of sight by now, both fascinated by this friendship (one I had never known) and highly disturbed by the thought that he was speaking so freely to our enemy. "…I think… I think I look up to Speedy." "Quickman?" She turned to look at him, confused. "Why?" "Yeah. He lived a good life, a free life. I was really concerned about what he was doing in the lab, but now I wonder… what if he was just scared? I think… well, I know he never got along with Rock, but he was misinformed. He rejected evil of his own free will and chose to lead a peaceful and lawful life. I gotta respect that kind of self-sacrifice and redemption." ———————— When Magnet came back that night, I was waiting for him. "Gemini! You're… what are you doing up so late? Where's Siam?" "Right behind you, lover-boy." He spun around, his eyes glinting dangerously. ((Image found on Tumblr, user acoolmegamanblog)) I narrowed my eyes at him. The two of me grabbed one arm each. Rapid fire questions and comments. "You [glitchy] fool." "You're going to get yourself killed like that!" "Do you have any IDEA what Viper would do to you if he found out?!" "Or even Dr. Light for that matter!" "You lovesick [moron]!" "SHUT UP!" We were sent flying by a blast of magnetic force—reverse polarity in rage. Before I could get up, I got socked one right to the face. CLANG! I brought my hand up to catch another punch. He was furious. "You… how dare you! I trusted you! What I do with my personal life is NONE of your business!" I gritted my teeth and lowered my hand away from my face, forcing him to be pinned to the wall with a powerful shove. "Are you blind?! It's not going to last, not if she wasn't lying about Rock. Think what you like, 'Nico', but that secret life is going to paint a [DARN] big target RIGHT OVER YOUR [GLITCHING] HEART! You're the ONLY one I can trust, other than myself—and now I learn you've been leading more of a double life than me! For the love of physics." I shoved him away, the two of us coming together to stand over him. We were mirror images of one another, our faces etched with worry and pain. "The DLN line is our enemy. They want us DEAD! Do you hear me?! DEAD!" we shouted in unison, snatching him up off the floor and speaking harshly at him once more. "We won't stop you." "But you had better think about stopping yourself." "Before you end up looking into the cold, cold eyes of the Menace." "Which would be—" "—The very last thing—" ((Art by dA user TheSlayerSenshi. Used a screenshot of the smaller version, since the actual picture once linked to is MUCH larger.)) We spoke in unison. "—You would EVER see."
{Part XIV: Shadow of the Texan Son}I arrived at Redención, Texas late at night. I waited in silence until I was sure I would not be sighted, and then carefully went to an abandoned place of town.
I carefully took off my helmet and my gloves, removing my exterior armor plating and wrapping it all in a careful bundle. I had been built for flexibility and silence, so I did not have as much armor as the others. I did not dare to leave them behind, even in hiding, so I wrapped it all in my cape and carried it over my back.
When the sun rose, the old man began working at the bar. I was surprised to see him up so early, but I soon understood why—the work began around that time for those out at the ranch. It was no more than an hour before the first customers began to arrive. I waited until it was day before I walked in to the bar.
My arrival was unnoticed in the activity, which was as I had intended. I made my way to the bar itself.
He came over to me, a little surprised at my darker wear in such hot weather. "What'll it be, sir?"
I looked at him intently in silence for a few moments.
MATCH FOUND: Mr. Gonzales
It was only then that I spoke, and that was quietly.
"{Señor Gonzales, I need your help.}"
He raised an eyebrow, surprised at my perfect Spanish. I continued.
"{I am DWN - 024. I am Speedy's youngest known brother. He trusted you, so I shall trust you. Please, ¡ayúdame!}"
This took him by surprise. I rapped a knuckle against my arm to emphasize my point. He immediately glanced to my shoulder. Since I was not wearing my cape, my serial number was visible if you knew where to look.
He nodded stiffly and motioned me back. I hopped off the stool and followed him.
He took me to an office, where he locked the door and faced me sternly, crossing his arms. He spoke in strong Spanish, clearly his native tongue.
"{You he never mentioned, so you have some explaining to do before you can expect me to trust you. One wrong move, and there will be the police! …But if you do mean well, I will help you if I can.}" His expression softened, showing weariness. "{He was as a son to me.}"
I nodded. I continued to speak frankly and quietly, as was my nature. It was a long story, beginning with my activation and the reflections on my memory banks, and ending with my encounter with the Red Baron. At the mention of the Red Baron and the Blue Menace, he stroked his mustache, worried.
"{So that is what happened to him, in the end. He still lives? In spirit? I wish I had known. Oh, if only I had known. You were right to run away—Wily is a bad man! He may be working for peace, but I question that now, from what you have said.}"
"{You believe me, I hope?}"
"{How can I not? All that you have told me is exactly as he said it, down to the detail. All that was secret, which you could only have known if you are as you claim.}"
"{Please. Ayúdame.}" I bowed respectfully, out of a habit in my programming I did not yet know. "{I am incomplete. I wish to be whole. I seek purpose.}"
He put a hand on my shoulder. "{Shadow, I can do little to help you. I am no scientist, mi amigo.}" I lifted my head up, and he continued. "{Even if you had your heart, you could not stay here, not right now. If what you have said is as I fear, then this Red Baron is truthful. The Blue Menace rode forth twice now, and many died before him. If he is to ride again soon, then you will not be safe here. Tell me truthfully—have you broken any law?}"
"{Not to my knowledge, señor. I admit I did cause damage when I ran from the lab. But I maintain I was in danger of my life. I have not harmed another except in self-defense—the Baron I did not harm, though we did fight. He was a talented warrior. I do not wish for a fight.}"
He looked sad at this. I later realized I must have sounded like his son.
"{Then you must continue to be so. Poor Speedy, he was tricked into doing greater harm. I do not know what would have become of him if he survived the fight. I do not like to think on that. I do not wish for you to meet his fate.}"
"{I wish to live, señor. That is why I came. Even aware, I am not alive.}"
"{I will help you as I can, if you can promise to obey the laws to the best of your strength. Will you do this?}"
"{Yes.}"
"{I have your word, then. Remember that!}"
He sighed and sat down, taking a map out of his desk. He unfolded it, and unfolded, and unfolded…
"{This, here, is the town.}" His leathered hand traced a path to another place. "{This here, this point is the other town. He traveled there at times, used the computer in the library. If what you say is true, then he is alive in heart—perhaps you could speak to him if you went there.}" He took out another map, one of places to the north. "{This place here is where he buried tokens of his family. I wish you to visit it at some time if you can, but do not stay there—it may be known to Light, I am not sure.}" He gave me the exact coordinates and stood, folding the maps away once I had scanned them into memory. "{That is all I can do to help. I am sorry I cannot do more.}"
I shook my head and bowed again, kneeling against the floor. "{You have given greater assistance than I could have hoped for. I am in your debt. I hope to return again in a more peaceful time.}"
"{So do I, Shadow… so do I.}"

{Part XV: The Sheriff's Shadow}It was then that the pieces began to fall into place.
I had at last arrived in the city. It would become spooky to reflect on in later days; it was almost exactly as Speedy had remembered it. I found the library with ease, just as he had. Unlike him, however, I chose to wait out of sight, to move in the shadows.
I had discovered that my stealth was truly an art. I possessed knowledge of masters in the field, and a variety of technology to assist me. My favorite was what some called a "dark generator"—a small globe that made the whole world seem to be a field of stars when activated. I did have to use it more than once to escape more unsavory persons when traveling in the less-policed streets at night.
I entered the library through a service entrance and waited until night to emerge from my hiding place in one of the upper rooms. All was quiet, which gave me comfort. In this silence, I slipped onto a particular computer and mimicked the actions of the brother who had come there before me years ago.
Immediately, all my hard work up to that point was rewarded many-fold!
Welcome, DWN - 024. I'm relieved to see you made it safely. I've been hoping to talk with you.
You are DWN - 012.
Yes.
24 is twice 12.
Ironic, isn't it? It seems like you've really followed along my path. Boy, I wish you could have known Crash. It would have been great, the three of us together…
I need your help.
I suspected you might. What happened after the others went rogue?
I do not understand.
Oh, you must not have been on a computer in a while. Well, I can tell you this—the others went rogue. I actually had an argument with one of them shortly after the lot of them broke out of the lab, in a way very similar to how you broke out.
Then Señor Gonzales must be right.
You spoke with Pops!?
Yes.
Please, send me the video feed!
I could not explain why, but I sensed desperation in his message. I would later know that it was so—he felt a sense of anguish and loss. I found the request to be reasonable, as I had access to all his memories before his deactivation. It seemed only fair to grant him something as harmless as that.
I sent the file, and he seemed to process it for quite some time. There was silence, other than the sound of his systems thinking over what had been said.
My poor father…
Why do you call him that?
He taught me most of everything. He taught me how to be sporting, how to work hard, how to clean and cook, how to learn for myself, how to play cards…. He meant so much to me. I wish I could go back. I don't know what the Sheriff and Mayor must think of me now…
He seemed to think that the Blue Menace would "ride forth" again soon.
*Sigh* Yes. He was right to tell you to leave. That will be the first place they will look, once they get notification that you've been on the database from this location.
That is most inconvenient.
Being a fugitive tends to be very inconvenient. You seem to have done a very good job so far, though, based on this file you sent—did you really raise such a ruckus when you escaped? I'll be dashed, that you made it all the way to South Texas without being harassed by the United States Air Force!
I appreciate the praise. However, I still need your help.
What can I do to help? I don't even have a chassis anymore. My own survival is even more precarious than yours—the Cloud is a hostile place, full of nasty viruses and firewalls. I'm lucky to have not been fried.
I wish to be complete. You are the only one I can trust who has the capacity to help. I desire to possess the BetaEmotions program.
… … … … Are you sure about that?
Yes.
He seemed to think this over for a while. I waited patiently.
…It's not a program I can easily transfer.
I suspected that would be the case. But you can help me?
Yes, though it will be dangerous. And… I would like something in return.
What would that be?
I'll make you a deal.
Elaborate.
Alright, but make sure you listen to the whole thing before you respond.
The only way to get you the program is to hook you up to a mainframe. There are only two places I know of where that is possible. One is Light Laboratories, Inc. The other is Dr. Wily's old lab.
I cannot go back to L.L. Inc.
I'm not done yet.
Sorry.
Anyway… if you want the program, you'll have to go back to the old lab. I know where it is, I can tell you. But it won't be easy—I'll have to hack my way past the defenses, and that could take a few days. Once you get inside, we'll have to head right for his workshop. I'll be able to direct you once we get there. I promise that I'll get you the right programming and nothing more. Be aware that once you have emotions, your personality will develop—and you'll become someone slightly different than you are now. It's not like being rewritten, but you will see the world in a completely new way.
I understand. What do you wish in return?
If I do this, you must promise to get me a new chassis. I need a body again. I'd prefer one like my first one, but the fact is… I don't know how much longer I'll survive in the Cloud. Any decent chassis will do for an in-between, if there's no other choice.
So. There it is. You can take it or leave it, brother. Keep in mind that the whole ordeal will be the most dangerous thing you have ever done, even compared to what you faced when you escaped. It'll be made all the worse by the Blue Menace and the Red Baron being on the loose. Are you absolutely sure you want to go through with this?
Processing… Processing… Processing…
Yes.
I am sure.
Very well. I'll give you the coordinates, and then I suggest you had better break out of there and get your tail up to the western-Midwest again; we can't afford to waste any more time.
{Part XVI: Dogfight With The Red Baron}As I suspected, Shadow made his way right to the station his brother had used in years before him. I knew that Light and Wily would both be notified, so I changed my course to go intercept "the Blue Menace" before he could do too much damage. Let me tell you, it's not pleasant to run across the continental United States and try to avoid all the major highways. It helped to have a motorcycle—something I had found and repaired in Monstropolis—but I sure wish I could have gone through cities rather than around them. ((Art by dA user icfiye. This is a screenshot of the smaller version.)) My favorite city would definitely be Kansas City. I had a saxophone that I would play from time to time—one of my three prized possessions. I had my scarf, my sax, and my my bike. With those and decent weather, I loved to sit out under the sky. Sometimes I would even play music from the rooftops. But… I digress. As I said, I went after Rock. I had hoped to stop him before he did too much damage. Though his mission would involve the crystals, I doubted his combat program could run without another robot ending up deactivated in the process. That's how it is with war—things tend to get out of hand, and then people die. We may not be human, but we were people. I for one did not want any more damage to be wrought. Unfortunately, I arrived too late. By the time I made it to where I needed to be, he was already making his way out of the fortress. DWN - 020 had fallen. I appeared in front of him. He did a double take, startled. I spoke calmly, not bothering with formalities for the likes of him and just priming up my cannon blaster. ((Art by dA user kanefinger1939)) "Hi Rock, my weapon is hot—It’s time to throw down, show me what you’ve got! Today we change the end!"With that, the fight began. He was so confused that he didn't have time to run his combat program—if I had learned one thing, it was to make sure I didn't give him time to run it. I couldn't help but question him as I did so. "Why do you fight? How can you say you know what’s right?" ((Art by dA user jasonhohoho)) PTEOW! He dodged my fire, but not my words. "You've seen the journals of the Wily Robots. They had hearts just as you. Do you mean to keep killing your brothers? Is that really how you want to paint history?" ((Art by Tumblr user headphone-guy)) My words became a bit more bitter and sarcastic. "What if we win? What if we fall? Will any choice that we make matter at all?" "Would you just shut up?! I know I can win, I’ve done it before—Get out of my way!" BANG!((Art once again by the amazing dA user imbisibol)) I skidded back, lowering my shield once he stopped firing at me. To his confusion, I grinned and lowered my weapon. " Impressive! Very impressive." I knew it was time for me to leave, before he started getting really serious and I was in for a fight to the death. "Don't expect this to be the last of me." ———————— It wasn't long after that when I got my next order from Dr. Wily. Apparently he had recovered enough to get out of the hospital, because his voice was just as cranky as ever. "Your orders are to go chase down DWN - 024! Stop him!" ((Art by dA user digitallyfanged)) I looked out at the city and made my final decision. I wasn't going to put up with Wily any more. Not for this. I had lives to save. It was time to get to work.

{Part XVII: Eyes of the Devil} I slammed into the room to find him stroking one of those sickening snakes of his. He looked up lazily. "Why, if it isn't DWN - 019." "I've had it, Viper!" I shouted, pointing at him with growing confidence. "What is going on here?! Why am I hearing news of the Menace on the move?" He stood and stretched, ignoring me. I was not pleased in the slightest. I had been minding my own business, working on apologizing to Magnet and repairing our sibling relationship, when suddenly we had received news that both DWN - 017 and DWN - 020 were dead. This had shaken the two of us up rather severely, as we were certain we would be next. "Answer me!" He yawned as if bored. "Go… back to your little cave, Narkissos. Doessssssssn't… concern you." He then curled up and started snoozing. I don't know what got into me, but I walked over and looked down on him. "Well. If that's how you're going to have it, then I'm leaving." No real response. "I'm serious, Snakeman. I don't care for this grand plan—take the crystals, for all I care! I'm tired of you pushing us around, and I've had it with the—" ((Art by dA user Giaru-Orihidero, screenshot for size purposes)) In a flash, he grabbed me by the throat and slammed me to the ground. Before I could react I was thrown from the floor to the wall and cornered again. He smirked, a cold glow in his eyes as he held me pinned to the wall. Something began coiling around my armor. I didn't dare look down—the look in his eyes was too frightening. "You are truly an idiot. I see all." It was then that the screens came on and I truly began to comprehend what he meant. ((Art once more by the amazing dA user imbisibol, screenshot for size reasons)) Screen after screen flickered on. Several of them showed a fight in progress. Snippets of the conversation with Topman as he taunted his opponent were only matched by dozens of other slight sounds. He had been spying on us this whole time. From the very beginning, he hadn't just been scouting—he had been spying. This made his actions come into a clear and terrible focus—he had been using the lot of us as pawns all this time! He had traced our near every move, infested our dwellings with his cameras and his reach of power! My attention was brought back as the grip around my neck tightened. "You think I am blind…? Ssssss… you are a fool. I see all. You cannot leave, Gemini! And neither can Siam! Oh yes, don't be surprised—I can tell the difference between my brother and his clone! That cowardly little…" He threw me at the door, and there was a horrible flash on the screens showing Top's fight. My pupils shrank drastically—I had just witnessed my brother's destruction. All the journal entries in the world could not have prepared me for what that meant to witness first-hand. "Go back. Go back to your cave! Run if you wishhhhhhhh… but you will never escape the Menace's wrath." He held up the crystal I had had on my person, a snake coiling around his arm. "You are of no ussssssse to me now. GET OUT!" I didn't need to be told twice.
{Part XVIII: Death in the Mirror}Escape. Escape. We had to escape. While my clone was off talking to Viper, the Menace had made his way to my hideout. Despite my best efforts, I could not fend him off before he made his way to my hiding place. I only had just enough time to send a warning message to Magnet and a distress signal in general before his combat program began to run. I was here, I was there. My laser bounced off the walls, my clone and I firing in succession. I was so grateful for the company—I had arrived just in time to join myself for the fight—but it was not enough. True, I had never seen him so cornered, so at odds. And I would have taken pride in this, were it not for the fact that I was trying not to die. WHAM!I almost fell down on top of him when a small object with the force of a cannon ball slammed against the ceiling. "HardMan!" Gemini yelled. I looked at the Menace in dismay, realizing he was right. This was unfortunately a poor decision, as the next thing I saw was the rain of fists coming right at me. WHAM! WHAM! WHAMWHAMWHAMWHAM”Siam screamed in pain. Parts of my plating were cracked and broken off, leaving my interior components exposed. Gemini tackled him, the two of them wrestling for control, lasers and knuckles flying everywhere. Parts of the ceiling started to fall. BLAM.The last thing I remember was the ceiling coming down on top of us. ———————————— Rebooting…"Hey. Are you awake yet?"I slowly became aware, staring up at the clear sky. Soon I saw someone peering over me. ((Art by dA user nogiho)) "…Who…?" "You can call me 'Cardinal' for now," he said calmly. "You're lucky to be alive. That was pretty clever of you, but barely worked—your clone exploded into bits, and your weaponry element was removed. You'll only be able to clone yourself until it gets replaced." I sat up, putting a hand to my head. I felt badly battered and in pieces. It was no surprise—much of my armor had been removed. "Your armor was damaged. You'll have to do without for a while." "Who are you?" I asked again, dazed. "Your ally, if you'll be smart enough to accept that." He picked me up off the ground by my good arm, firmly but not roughly. "I need your help." "My help?" "Yes. Siam, you're listed as dead now. You'll be able to go where you please. But you won't get far, not like this. I'll help you if you help me. Deal?" I thought on this, closing my eyes wearily. "If you mean well, then yes. But no more fighting. I'm tired of this war." "Heh." He clapped a hand to my back before hauling me over his shoulders. "I can live with that. That's what I want too. So, I'm guessing Deal?" "We have to get Magnet," I said abruptly, slowly coming more to. As I became more aware, I remembered the danger. "He's in great danger!" "Alright, we'll get him too. But after that— we have a rogue brother of yours to hunt down." "You mean Shadow?" I was surprised to hear he was still alive. "Why, what business do you have with him?" "I'd rather not explain this more than once, so I'll wait until I have the two of you together." I looked off to the side, reflecting on what had just happened. "My life keeps getting stranger and stranger. Everything seems to be happening so quickly now. I was just talking to Magnet— the next thing I know, I'm fighting for my life, and then you show up out of nowhere." "I've known about you all for far longer than you realize. You'll understand with time." We arrived at a motorcycle of his. He got out a scooter jet as well, tossing me the keys. "You ride that." "Whose is it?" He gave a cocky grin. "I don't think the Menace will need it for a while, do you?" I had to laugh at this. "You know, I think we may be able to get along, after all." I put the keys into the ignition. Within minutes, the two of us were racing off under the freedom of the open sky. Things were looking up—I was still alive, and I had an ally now. Maybe there was a chance to survive this mess after all. I could only hope we would make it to Magnet in time.

{Part XIX: Death Draws Near}"Sorry, Nico. I gotta Roll." I looked at her in confusion. "But… but I only just got here." She turned away coldly, looking upset. "You… I can't believe you lied to me!" I sat down, trying to get her to sit next to me, but she wouldn't. ((Art found on Tumblr, user effkaybros)) "What do you mean?" "As if you don't know! You were acting like my friend… I trusted you…" "But I am your friend! You mean the world to me, you're more than just a friend—I really think you're the one—" She cut me off, her voice quavering. "No! I can't bear to hear it. I… I trusted you! And now I know the truth. Wily was never good at all! He was using us!" She whirled to face me, her fists shaking. "And YOU! You were helping him! You… you must have been spying on us!" I can't say how much that hurt. I struggled to find the right words. "Roll, I swear I never—" "Get out! I'm going to call my Dad and my brother, and then you'll regret it!" My eyes widened and I stood abruptly, startled. "ROLL! Please! I never had anything to do with Wily's plans! You can't let that get between us—I never meant any harm!" I was left with my heart sinking as she turned and walked away. ((Art found on Tumblr, user effkaybros)) "Roll, no…! Please— don't leave me, baby…" I took of my helmet and held it in my hands, feeling the world turn hollow around me as she walked out of my life, a terrible chill falling upon me as she spoke in her parting scorn. "Watch yourself, my brother wants you dead." ——————— I made my way home, barely registering what was happening around me. The world seemed void of purpose. What was I supposed to do now, now that I didn't have her in my life? Everything I had done, everything I had worked for—it had always been to keep her safe, to keep her happy. I fell to my knees, speaking in barely a whisper as I choked on my words. "If these magnets do what they say… how come I could never make her stay…?" BANG!I whirled around to see the worst possible sight come to greet me. A shadow, then a form—my eyes widened as Rock appeared in the doorway and fired upon me. I scrambled to my feet, grabbing my helmet and putting it on quickly as I dodged out of the way. Rock, for his part, was [ticked]. "You! You'll never bother my sister again!" I was heartbroken, and not at all in the mood for a visit from him. I slammed him against the wall with a magnetic blast. ((Art found on Tumblr, user acoolmegamanblog)) "What?! You're the whole reason there's trouble! Leave her out of it!" He gritted his teeth and fired again. I fired a series of horseshoe magnets on him, preparing to fight the monster I had heard about—but that wasn't what I got. He wasn't running his combat program. For him, this was personal. He was personally venting his anger—hoping to kill me in the process! "You think you're the only one who can love?!" "She's my sister! I won't let you hurt her!" My magnetic field went off, pulling him toward me. I blanked out, my own circuitry going haywire. His feet flew out from under him and he cried in surprise. When the effect lessened, though, he fired on me again. ((Art once again by the amazing dA user imbisibol can you tell I love her stuff yet)) Enough was enough. "You walk into my town, waving that gun around! You want a fight?! I'll give you one tonight!" ((Art found on Tumblr, user jojobros)) "I think you better not mess with me, kid!" "Oh yeah?! Well take THIS!" Suddenly his eyes turned dark, and his blue plating faded to a grey and yellow scheme. I had seen this in the database before—it was a power far more potent than even Spark's, which I was terribly weak to. My pupils must have shrunk down to a pixel in size as I realized too late that he must have taken the power unit from the storage at Light Laboratories. K-ZAP!I heard the explosion of short-circuits. My system absolutely lost it, magnetic fields destabilizing the support beams of the ceiling. The room started caving in. BLAM.————————— Rebooting…"I don't know… do you think he'll make it? He looks in bad shape.""He's sturdier than he might look. Besides, I did manage to save him from the worst—Mega thinks that he got buried in rubble, so he won't come looking for us. I wish I had reached you guys faster, though; now I'm the only one that's armed. I hadn't expected I'd be doing repairs on you both.""I believe I owe you a severe apology. You have now saved both my life and the life of my brother. I had doubted you a little at first… that was selfish of me.""It's okay, I'm used to it. Besides, who can blame you? After the life you've had, you don't really know what it's like to have someone you can trust. But I hope we can change that."I felt weak, too weak to speak for now, so I just listened. "I wish we could move faster, but I'm going to have to go get repairs for the both of you.""How?""I'm in contact with Wily. He'll be able to sneak me into L.L., Inc. Ah—don't worry, I don't really intend to work with him. But I'd better go back and get the rest of those power capsules so he can't just wreak havoc all through the States in trying to hunt us down, if he finds out. Besides, there's something still at the lab that we're going to need in the end, if we hope to make it out of this mess alive."
{Part XX: Brotherly Alliance}My first order of business was to take the two of them to a safe place. We weren't that far from Monstropolis, and there was the very real danger of Mega realizing he had been tricked and coming back to hunt them down. I ended up taking the two of them on a road trip to Kansas City. It was far away, but the safest place I knew. They still had that delivery truck of theirs, so I loaded my bike into it and took them on a trip down the highway. Once they were safe, I went right back—straight to Light Laboratories, Inc. I managed to sneak in using some codes Wily had given me. I was in disguise, so I chose speed over stealth. It's not like I planned on returning there any time soon. In this disguise, I cleared out much of Wily's old inventory. There were extra weapon components for the Robot Masters, E Tanks, and multiple blueprints. I'm sure it was to no end of an annoyance to him, but it served us well in the end. I also managed to remove a vitally important old chassis that was scheduled to be destroyed. With all this in hand, I made my way off of the premisses and did not look back. ———————— It took a while before the repairs were finally finished. We didn't have an official laboratory to work with, and Magnet was unresponsive for much of the time. I had begun to worry that he was glitched until he started speaking again. His voice was distant and tired—heartbroken. "…Thank you for saving my life." It was the first I had heard him speak the entire time. I glanced over at Siam, though neither of them noticed. "Are you doing alright? You were badly damaged in the fight." He covered his eyes, the only part of his face that was visible. "As alright as I'll ever be, I think." I put the repair tools away. The two of them were quiet for a while, and then Siam spoke up suddenly. "You said you were going to explain more once you had the two of us together. I think we're ready to hear what you have to say. I can't say how grateful I am to you, but this whole situation is very distressing. You seem to have some idea about this whole mess. I'd very much appreciate it if you would share." This didn't come as a surprise to me. It had been a long time in the making. I wasn't sure how successful we would be now that most of the RMs were already destroyed, but several important ones still remained alive and at large. I sat on top of the desk and looked at the two of them. We had been through several adventures now, and even I didn't fully understand what it had been that had given me the courage to trust them. I understood they felt the same way. It was tempting to tell them the whole story, but I knew that now was not the time. I chose instead to tell them what it was that they needed to know. "What you're looking at is multiple generations of highly advanced robots with complex AI&A systems. The inclusion of BetaEmotions programming has also had unexpected and unintended results when combined with the AI&A programming. Each generation has had a set of unique challenges and difficulties." ((Art by dA user General-RADIX)) "The first generation is the one I am from. I'm older than all of you, and I've seen others after me come and go. I don't listen to orders, I think for myself. No one liked this, so they tried to create something that would better listen to orders. The result included the DLN line." Magnet looked away at this, possibly distracted by thoughts of Roll. I continued speaking; either he would pay attention, or he wouldn't. I couldn't really help him any further with what was on his mind. "You all know of the catastrophic results when a house robot was given combat programming." "He didn't run it until late in the fight with me," Magnet interrupted. "I didn't know he could do that." I raised an eyebrow. If that was true, then Mega must have really had it out for Magnet—he had gone out to fight him by choice, and must have started the program when things got out of hand. "My point still stands. …The second generation was where it really started to show that the programming was producing unexpected results. That generation had three distinctly hostile robots, but it also had three distinctly positive robots." ((Art by dA user rakumel. Screenshot because size.)) "You're all familiar with DWN - 012 because his journals were made available to you. He was the most famous and widely studied. However, he wasn't the only one to become independent—just the most successful. His immediately older and younger brothers were very similar to him in terms of a more peaceful disposition." Comprehension was slowly dawning in their eyes as I went on. "Your generation is the third generation. Despite an active effort to avoid making independent beings, you two still turned out like you are. And Shadow is also independent, even more than the two of you. Your spirit is much like mine and like 'Speedy' was. We are independent robots." I crossed my arms. "There aren't many like us. Who knows if any more will be built. Wily seems to have a great talent of producing brothers like us… but he is a dangerous man and has also made monsters. I don't trust Light, either—he knows that Mega's programming is faulty, but he never changed it. We're rare and outnumbered; that's why I want us to work together. Alone we can do little, but together we might even be able to find a way to ensure we can live a peaceful life with people we can trust." There was a long stretch of silence. "…Viper was saying something about a new world order. He… talked about much the same things you did, though… he considered our independence to be weakness. He had a different idea, an idea of domination." "I don't want anything to do with that sort of thing, as I told you." I held out my hand, gesturing as I spoke. "Right now, my main goal is to find Shadow. We really need to make sure he doesn't fall into the wrong hands and that he doesn't get into too much trouble. I think he's been in contact with Speedy, though. If I had to guess, I'd say the two of them are headed to the old lab." "I thought DWN - 012 was destroyed?" "No. He got into a bad fight, yes, but his chassis remained intact enough that he was able to restart. His AI&A programming is at large in the Cloud. If he's working with Shadow, then Shadow is probably getting his help to get a copy of the BetaEmotions program. That's what Shadow wants. Speedy wants to be repaired: it doesn't take a genius to figure that out. The only place that both would be possible would be Wily's old lab, which is fractionally less dangerous than L. L., Inc. in the sense that Light and security guards aren't hanging around." This hung in the air for a while. You could almost see the connections being made, the conclusions being drawn. "So… you repaired us because you didn't want to be alone. You want a community. And you want our help tracking Shadow down." ((Art by dA user WhiteFox89, screenshot because size)) "Bingo." Siam sighed and looked up and off to the side. "Well, we do owe you one, that's for sure. And I rather like your idea of a world as opposed to Viper's. But how do you intend to convince Shadow to join us?" I got out a knife. "With this." "Force?" "No. This." I opened a package that had remained sealed since before we arrived. They crowded around and expressed surprise when they saw what it was. "Laws of nature…" Speedy's old chassis lay neatly packed in the box. It was still badly damaged. With no power and no program, it seemed very much like a corpse. I knew, though, that it was our best hope moving forward. "If we can help Speedy get his chassis back, we will have a powerful ally and a staunch friend on our side. And if he can help Shadow, then we will all be free in mind, heart, and body… and we can work on making our way through this world." I closed the box, shutting it tight with packing tape. "But we won't really get anywhere unless we start right now. I spent a long time repairing the two of you, and I don't regret it—but I very much fear we'll be too late unless we move soon. You don't have to come with me, but I would very much appreciate the help." —————— Within two hours, we were back on the road, burning rubber as we made our way across the state, heading west toward the secret lab. "I just have one last question." "Try not to distract me too much when I'm driving. What is it?" "Why do you wear your sunglasses at night?" I couldn't help but smile. If we were lucky, I had a feeling this alliance would be a very rewarding experience.

{Part XXI: DÉJÀ VU, DEATH WEARS BLUE} We needed more time to get to the lab. I was getting close to breaking through the system, but Shadow was still a long way away. I was forced to focus my attention on slowing down the Menace for long enough to give Shadow time to catch up to me without falling prey to Death himself. I didn't think he would actually fall for it. Out of all the plans I had to throw him off track, this one had seemed the least likely. Unfortunately, I was too late to stop him. By the time I hacked my way in, he was already fighting Spark. It had been a long time since I had seen him last. I thought I was prepared for it—I now knew him for who and what he was, and I was even angrier than the first time around. But I wasn't. Not even close. I wasn't ready to watch another fight I couldn't stop, another life I couldn't save. "It's lights out for you! You've sparked a war, Blue Menace!" It was no use. The fighting program was running—his eyes were dark and emotionless. I was too late to save my brother—I watched him fall. I saw that boy rip out the element that had powered Spark's ability… just as he had done to me. It brought back a flood of memories. Suddenly I was filled once more with rage. Unchecked, overpowering RAGE. SLAM.I closed and locked the door behind him. Took you long enough to get here."Show yourself!" What, you don't recognize your own brother? I'm hurt! After all the effort you took to track me down last time. This seemed to bother him. He took a step back. "Wh-wha…" The screens flickered on, playing back some video and audio from my memory banks. ——————— I was at the bar going over inventory for the Sheriff when I heard the warning sign. I stiffened, feeling my circuits freeze for a moment.
Pops looked up as well. "What in the blazes is going on out there?" he asked gruffly, narrowing his eyes. "Why all the screaming?"
I stood. "No need to ask, Pops." I hastily folded up the papers and scribbled "I'm sorry" on the back before handing them to him. "I know what it is."
He accepted the papers, his face quickly becoming concerned.
"It's over," I said softly, making my way towards the door with a heavy heart. "The Blue Menace is here."
"Quickman! Don't do this, son!"
I was having trouble keeping the pain out of my voice. "I'm sorry, Pops. And don't worry… this will be the end of it all."
Checking the boomerangs in my side holsters, I closed my eyes and sighed before opening the double doors and stepping into the doorway.
Was there ever a chance I could change my fate? Unlikely. But I would defy it nonetheless.
Nearby, a crowd was starting to gather near the bar. And off in the distance… MegaMan himself was walking into town. And boy, did he look furious.
I felt myself tensing in preparation to run off. I looked around at the curious crowd.
"The man in blue has arrived!" I called out in warning as I stepped down and out into the street.
He must have heard me, because he threw a map down at the ground and called out himself. "You TRICKED me!" he shouted. "You made me go through that dangerous firing range for no good reason!"
I put my hands to the boomerangs in their holsters as I walked forward. "No good reason? Oh no. There's way too much at stake now. You killed my brothers. I wasn't just going to sit in that factory and wait for you to kill me, too."
He continued to look around wildly, unable to see me due to the crowd between us.
"What are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere?! What does that have to do with Wily's plan?!"
I drew my boomerangs and narrowed my eyes. "Tell me, boy,… I snapped. …Is what they say true? Does Death wear blue?!"————— He looked almost sick at this. "Impossible! You… I defeated you!" He fired at one of the screens, blasting a hole in it. But I did not stop—I had been driven almost mad in grief and pain. You can't just kill your way out of this one, MegaMan! You destroyed me…you killed me! THIS IS THE GHOST OF THE MAN YOU KILLED…BLUE MENACE, FACE THE WRATH OF THE DEAD!Video feed, audio recordings, memories…all began playing back at once as screen after screen turned on. To a human it would have been a horrific cacophony, but for a robot that could process that many things at once, it was even worse. ((The whole entry that the Menace is subjected to can not be seen here; I chose not to include it in full here because it is very long and repetitive—it has 14 entries. I will probably post it in full at some point, though.)) ————————— His armor glowed the color of sapphires as he rose up, the wind whistling around him. He fired a small tornado up into the night sky. Airman's weapon!WARNING. WARNING. DANGER. DANGER.Suddenly, I felt something which horrified me. A fast approaching signal from one of my brothers. Quickman was on the move, and he was headed straight for us! MegaMan raised his launcher and pointed it right at me, looking about ready to fall over. One more Crash Bomb ought to do it…Glancing behind me, I saw open air. I only had one shot to override this program. Quickman… I'm sorry you had to see this…Taking a deep breath, I charged right for him! KKKKKKKRRWOOOOOOOOOOOOH!I was blasted head on with a powerful miniature tornado. It hit me square in the chest and sent me flying… …all the way over the edge… …down… …down… ((art by chlomo again)) "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"Suddenly, my body was filled with pain and there was a horrible sound of crunching metal, severing wires, accompanied by a great crash. I groaned. Off in the distance, I could hear someone shouting. "HEY!"Run, Quickman, I thought as I forced myself to move, though it was hard to do. I don't want you to have to see this…I heard someone walking up next to me. I could have sworn my insides felt cold, but it was probably just due to exposure to the night air. I gave a slight smile as I heard a plasma cannon being primed to fire. I did it… my will overcame the program…A child's hand reached into the exposed interior of my arm to retrieve my launcher. My only weapon… gone. No one will no the truth to this story…BLAM.—————— I didn't notice that his armor had changed to purple and white until it was too late. BLAM!Time stopped, and so did I. It was like I had run into a brick wall. I was in pain. Cannon fire blasted into me as I was suspended in the air and in time, completely helpless. Part of the armor over the important circuitry in my chest became riddled with holes. And then… BLAM!Time resumed, and I landed on the ground with a large hole through my chest. My body was burning with pain as circuitry sparked, trying to connect but failing. I couldn't move, and my senses were fading. As he slowly approached, I fell to my knees, dropping the boomerangs in my hands. Out in the distance, I could hear a horse approaching from behind us and see a car from town rushing out. But it was too late… I fell to my side on the ground. I guess… speed means nothing… when it's Death you are running from… I thought sadly. My power systems were failing, but I struggled to hang on. A child's hand pried my wrist launcher from my body as my vision failed and I closed my eyes for the final time. I was burning… burning…. I struggled to breathe, but I had been so badly damaged that my interior fans could not circulate this air through me. It was really over. I'm not scared anymore… I go to join the ranks of my brothers that have fallen before…Sounds seemed to be everywhere, but I no longer registered them. My power systems were failing, and I could feel my back-up self destruct sequence starting. In moments, I would be dead and my body destroyed. As I drew my last breath, my interior fans failing in the wake of so much damage to my system, I lamented my failure. I'm sorry… I failed you all…
What they say is true…((Art by dA user Gold-Buster)) Death does wear blue…————————— His hands were clamped over his helmet now. "Stop! STOP!" The feedback was cut short. I had done it—I had bought us time. And more than that. I had finally had the vengeance I had been thirsting for—that he would recognize what he had done, to know the pain of loss, loss he had caused. But it didn't make me feel any better. No, I felt worse. What had I done? What had I just done?! I realized too late that I had lost myself to anger, just like many of my brothers—including Mega himself—had done before me. I would have glitched pretty horribly if I had been in a chassis, something like getting sick to my stomach. As it was, my emotions program was too powerful for me to think straight. I understood then more than ever before or since, just how much of a burden it could be to have a heart. We both wept, in our own way. Both of us out of pain and out of guilt. "You… you have no idea what I've been through! The pain I've suffered— Remorse for everything I've done! My hand's a smoking gun!" You can't take it back now. You made the choice to move forward…I had failed to save Spark. There were only two left alive now—my two reflections. DWN - 022 and DWN - 024. Twelve plus ten and twelve times two. I couldn't stand sticking around any longer. There was nothing more I could do, for good or for ill. So once again, I fled the scene. And in the Cloud, I could have sworn that despite a lack of body, I ran.
{Part XXII: Convergence Point}To the outsider, what happened next may have seemed both inevitable and exciting. But that was not the case for those involved. Like beams of light directed by a lens, they all came together in a single location. ————— The first team to break in consisted of Speedy and Shadow. The security system was finally overridden, and Shadow broke down a door to get inside. Hurry! No time to waste!Shadow raced down corridors, shoving aside glitching guard bots as he made his way to the workshop room. The mainframe was turning on as he got inside. Quickly. You'll need to hook yourself up to the mainframe. I'll get the download started once you are ready."Understood." There was a scramble of wires as Speedy brought up the program and Shadow hooked himself in. Shadow felt a buzz of excitement as the download began. Tense hours passed, and they were beginning to hope they would go unnoticed. This was abruptly interrupted by the horrid sound of alarms. As the program continued to download, he began feeling—and one of his first emotions was dread. This was compounded by the distant sound of battle. ((Art by dA user aka120puppet)) He looked to the door sharply, his red eyes glowing in the dark. "He is here." —————— Meanwhile, there was someone trying to fight his way through a growing swarm of security robots. This certain someone could hardly believe that the lab was still activated, but he soon became distracted. You again?! For the love of physics! How many times will I have to fight you, Blue Menace?"I'll fight you as many times as it takes! Don't lie to me—I know what you're up to! I won't let a dangerous robot like you go running loose looking for revenge!" I already had my revenge, brother. I didn't like it. I'd take it back if I could, even knowing all that you did to us!"Oh yeah?! Well, maybe I'd buy that if you hadn't stolen your body!" Wait, what?—————— It was at this time that the second team broke through the intercom. You never give up, do you, Rock? There you go again, making assumptions as you cut a swathe of destruction in front of you."Not YOU again!" Proto grinned as he directed Siam and Magnet to the main work room. As for himself, he was making his way toward one of his most bitter enemies. If they were going to succeed, he would have to buy them some more time. And for that, he would have to fight. —————— Shadow quickly removed the wires as the download finished. He felt a little dizzy, suddenly experiencing what it was like to be fully alive. It was the same kind of feeling Speedy had dealt with when he had first been activated. Unfortunately, it was not a safe place to be disoriented—something compounded by the fact that others had broken into the lab. One of the walls broke down. Shadow immediately released an attack, but his shuriken stuck to a box. "TRUCE! TRUCE! Shadow, it's just us!" Magnet? I thought you were dead! Two robots became visible as the box was painstakingly dragged in. Shadow stopped his attack, just as surprised—the database listed them as dead. How were they standing right in front of him? "I'm sure you know what it's like to be listed as dead, but you're not," Siam commented with a dry smile. "We managed to survive, but barely." ((Art by dA user Rudohiko, screenshot because size)) "You fought him. I have the records. How are you in such shape?" Shadow asked, suspicious. "Proto repaired us. It's a long story, but we're friends." The box was ripped open. The security alarms were briefly interrupted by a screech of surprise from their older brother. MY CHASSIS!"Yeah," Magnet grunted, starting to lift the damaged equipment out of the box. "Speedy, we're here to help get your body back. You can take it or leave it, but don't spend too much time arguing!" "How can we trust you?" Shadow demanded. "Because Proto's holding the Menace off right now, even as we speak!" "How did you—" Speedy interrupted Shadow's questions. Shadow, you need to get out of here. If you don't trust them, then go—get out while you still can!"But what about you? I can't leave! I have to protect you!" From what, these guys? I don't have a body for them to fight. You do! Besides, they haven't done any harm yet. I've spoken with Magnet before—I trust him, though I do wish he had decided to help out sooner. They were already starting repairs using bits and pieces they had brought with them. Not all the colors matched, but in a time like this, that didn't matter. In addition to the security alarms, the sound of fighting became louder over the intercom. Shadow felt the whole situation was surreal, and knew that he was only beginning to understand how strange life could be. Speedy trusted these robots, and he was left with little choice but to do the same. Still, he knew that they would not be able to hold off the Menace for too much longer. "Is this Proto fighting him alone?" "Yes. He had no choice." "Then I shall join him." Before the others could object, Shadow ran off, heading straight for the sound of fighting.

{Part XXIII: Shades of Red and Blue}As Rock closed in, I was starting to wonder how the fight would end. My brother probably meant well, though in the past years he had gotten worse and worse at showing it. But "the road to Hades is paved with good intentions", as the saying goes—and I often think of him when I hear that phrase. ((Art by dA user Monkey92Man)) He was a fighter, and he was ruthless. Not entirely by choice, but it was clear he was well aware of it—this hunt was by choice, not orders. He had nothing to gain from this but the defeat of personal enemies. This meant his determination was much greater. I went into the fight knowing that, preparing to fight him to the last if I had to. I didn't want to, but I knew the others couldn't stand a chance, not in their current shape. When he cornered me, I acted calm and cool as always, as if I had planned it. I gave him my grin and prepared to face destiny, but… ((Art by dA user zibanitu6969)) Mega took shuriken to his armor when Shadow appeared out of nowhere. He cried out in pain and sparked—the smell made me realize that Shadow's weapons were coated in acid. I was suddenly very grateful he had never wanted to hurt me that one time we fought. The fight broke out before I could stop it. I was forced to take cover so that I wouldn't get hit by either of them—it was no child's play. This was war. I hadn't expected to see him, certainly not to my aid. I realized from the look in his eyes that he was different now—he had the programming he had longed for, that he had been willing to fight for. And now, willing to die for. ((Art by dA user mj-battle)) The battle was unlike most others. Most of my younger brothers couldn't help but to taunt Mega out of spite or fear—even I had done as much. But Shadow? He was silent. Not a single word. He faced his death without a sound. ((Art by dA user GarthTheDestroyer, screenshot because size)) And yes, his death. No combat experience, newly upgraded with a program that compromised his AI&A efficiency, facing an enemy with an arsenal of deadly weapons—he was way out of his league. It was horrifying to watch. I kept waiting for an opportunity to interrupt, but Shadow never gave me the chance. He kept moving around. When Mega tried using a spinning attack on him, Shadow would merely stab at him. Unfortunately, when Mega did get a hit in, it was devastating. WHAM!((Art by dA user General-RADIX)) Shadow was stunned for a moment, but that's all that was needed. Within seconds he was receiving a harsh beatdown. When he raised his blaster, I knew I had to do something. BLAMMega was thrown back by a direct hit to the chest, his attack missing Shadow's core by a relatively narrow margin. He crashed into a wall, blacking out long enough for me to run over. He apparently had been hit hard enough to mess up the combat program, because his eyes weren't dark when they came back into focus. ((Art by dA user General-RADIX, their stuff is great too)) "TAKE ONE STEP AND I'LL PUT A HOLE IN YOU, MENACE!"He tried to get quickly to his feet, but my attack had done more damage to him than he could so easily recover from. Apparently, his internal balance calibration had been broken. A stroke of luck, but I was seething with rage. My heart was burning, burning. I could feel my faulty core aflame in aggravation. "Look at you," I yelled. "Sometimes I can't see the blue through the red. Hard to see the good through your trail of dead!" He gritted his teeth, putting a hand to his blaster. "I am tired of you all speaking in riddles!" "You wouldn't care if you knew," I spat. "You say those things you do are what you choose. Well, choose to GET OUT! I will not stand for you to kill any further!" He fired. It went way off track, but I brought my shield out in front of me. I looked down at Shadow, feeling a sickening sense of dread—his left side had been torn to shreds. "You sicken me." "I have no idea who you are!" he shouted back. "Though you've done nothing but get in my way, so I can hardly care!" This stung. I had always known that he was the favorite, but the fact that even he was ignorant of my existence showed just how discarded I had been. "They lost me, forgot me, made you from parts of me!" I hauled Shadow over my shoulder. "If you're the one—my father's son—then what am I supposed to be?!" ((Art by dA user Thormeister)) I fired another blast to the side to throw him off balance. I was saying too much, but I was almost crying in the uncontrollable rage that consumed me. My sense of composure and control had evaporated. "I had a name! And then they tore my heart from my chest to give to you! I'm not broken—I'm not the Breakman. I was the first, I AM THE PROTOMAN!"((Art by dA user MidKnight-Renegade, screenshot because size)) BANG.The ceiling came crashing down between us. With Shadow on my back, I made a break for it.
{Part XXIV: City Blues}I paced about the small room we were in. After the spectacular showdown in the old lab, we had all managed to escape. Shadow was badly damaged, so we hit the road and went to Kansas City. It had been an eerily quiet ride, but I think we were all exhausted from what had just happened. Now we were in a hideout where Cardinal was directing repairs. Shadow had started to "heal" somewhat like a human would, much to our surprise—it was the first real clue that he had originally been built by a society far more advanced than we might ever live to see. ——————— "You never cease to amaze me at how much you know, Blues." Cardinal grinned. "I thought I told you to call me Cardinal." "Sorry. I just happen to be something of a music fan, and I really think it suits you." "Blues was a name given to me. Cardinal is a name I chose." He played a short tune on a whistle. "And yeah, I know a lot. I am older than you guys, after all." Nico rolled his eyes at this. I gave a slight smile. "So that's why you have such a grand vision?" "I don't see what's so hard to understand about having independence. If this is ever going to last, we're going to have to be able to work with humans peacefully without being taken advantage of." "Peace. I like the sound of that. I can almost remember what that was like." "That's always been a point of interest to many people. You integrated into society so successfully." He crossed his arms and walked over to look at one of the walls, as if going to look out a window. "What's your vision for the future like? What's your insight?" There was a click noise as I took off my helmet. "Your idea of independence does speak to me, I admit. Life with humans was hard—without an ID, there was very little I could do among society. Always being secretive really killed me, and I think it may have done so in more than just the figurative sense. To be treated as an equal… well, I was working toward that. But now… I don't know if I was allowed to help on the patrols because I was seen as a tool to help out, or as a person who earned the position. That bothers me." I turned my helmet over in my hands, looking on it with a sigh. I missed my hat and poncho, and my belt. They were probably destroyed by now. "But… I'd rather be part of that society anyway. I want to go back to Texas. Not just in general, but soon—even if I can't stay, I at least want to visit." Cardinal frowned at this. "I wouldn't recommend that. I know you want to go back, and what you really mean when you say that: I don't blame you." He shook his head. "But think on it for a moment. Everyone thinks you're dead. They heard the fight. You have a bad past with the military and therefore also the feds. If you were spotted with him again, what do you think would happen? He'd go to jail. He's not a young man, Speedy. I don't know how long he'd survive in prison." This made me really stop and think. I knew that I couldn't really return to the life I had, not any time soon. The thought that I might have to stay away entirely hadn't really occurred to me. Granted, I'd been pretty busy with raw survival until two days ago, but still. I didn't want to put Pops into such a position. I remembered my life there clearly now, and I longed for it. But could I do that? ((Art by dA user Pikachu344)) I looked over at my brothers and down at myself. We were all in rather sad shape, looking like we were made from scrap. Pieces didn't match, especially in color. None of us were quite in the fighting condition we were before, and I was starting to notice that Cardinal was often tired. It was as if he were ill. My brothers were counting on me. They were my family now, and I had to keep their needs in mind. At length, I put my helmet back on and spoke again. "You're right. It would be difficult." I turned a boomerang over in my hands. "But Pops wasn't just anyone to me, Cardinal. He was my father. Not my builder, but still my father. You don't just abandon family like that. I don't know if any of you get it, the meaning of family. Family is more than just a group of relatives. I can't explain it, but it was my driving purpose for years. We're a family now, and I think we should see Pops again. He can help us, even if only in advice. Besides. He wanted to see me again, Shadow said so." I pointed at each of them in a sweeping arc. "Just look at us. I agree that we need independence, but we can't get there as we are now. We need help. This is still the humans' world, and it would be wise to maintain any alliances we still have." Gemini and Siam spoke in unison as they finished the last of Shadow's repairs. "Family, hmm? Well, maybe that's what made you so different." Shadow's eyes flickered on. I smiled as our youngest brother put a hand to his head, looking a little dazed. He may be confused, but at least he was alive. We were all alive. And we were together. We were family. "Perhaps. But I think it's worth it."

{Epilogue I}There was a hiss as Viper emerged from his place on the ceiling.((Art by dA user Rootay)) "What's with all that noisssssse?"
The blue figure took a grim stance. "Let's just get to the point."((Art by dA user Kaigetsudo)) "What point? How am I sssssuposed to know what you broke into my house for?"
"I don't have time for this." He sounded tired, weary of the world. "I'd ask you if you had any idea of the damage you've caused, but past experience has shown me that you guys are so deluded that you don't even care."((Art found on Tumblr, user ayaexe)) "Oh? Innnnnnnteressssting. What do you say? You say 'Don't take their lives, they don't deserve to die!'?"
"Of course I do!"((Art found on Tumblr, user ayaexe)) "And who does?"
The Blue Menace was taken aback at this calm question. He hesitated, unable to answer. The reptilian Robot Master moved in a smooth manner, slowly starting to circle his prey.((Art by dA user Bug-Productions)) "Do you think it’s us? And what of the one who calls us sons?"
An image of Wily flashed across some of the screens for a brief moment, a spark of a suggestion. Mega blinked in a slight flinch at this.((Art by dA user neo-dragon, screenshot because size)) "You gonna kill him, too?"
The infamous combat robot didn't respond. He looked dazed now—uneasy. The serpent only smirked and continued speaking in an urging tone.
"Because who are you? You’re a man’s metal son, the same as everyone of us."((art by chloemew again)) "Become one of us. You can win this fight… but you gotta join our ssssssside…"
He was circling Mega now, within arm's reach.
"The lines are blurring between wrong and right…. You’re getting clossser to the other side…."((Art by Tumblr user headphone-guy)) "So take a bite, make a mark—Stop your fumbling in the dark of night! Just walk away from Light."((Art by Tumblr user giarudraws)) He spoke scoldingly, as if to a child. He placed his hand on the deadly cannon blaster, gently lowering it.
"Now you come into my town. The least you can do is listen to what I have to say. So what do you say?" His eyes flickered and glowed a steadily brighter red. "You fight for the steel, or you die beneath my heel—it’s up to you."((Art found on Tumblr, user ayaexe)) There was still no answer. Viper grinned, an edge of taunt creeping into his voice. Snakes began curling around his paralyzed victim. "…So what you gonna do?" He whispered into his older brother's ear. "Give in to temptation. We’ll build a new nation, you and I—so let the people die! Shed the lies and make a new world with the Sssssssnake…"
Mega brought his hand up to his face, his eyes half-closed now. The serpent repeated his argument from earlier.
"The lines are blurring between wrong and right… you’re getting closer to the other side…. So take a bite, make a mark— stop your fumbling in the dark of night! Just walk away from Light…"((Art found on Tumblr, user fyeahrockman)) Mega scrunched his eyes and turned his face away, raising his hand as if to shield from the words. There was a low chuckle and the serpent put a hand to Mega's shoulder, circling him to speak softly on the other side.
"Your will is strong. The truth is stronger. You’ve fought so long—how much longer will you fight? Walk away from Light."((Art found on Tumblr, user giaru)) A snake was starting to curl around Mega's neck. Viper spoke with soothing confidence. It was dark now, and hard to see.
"The lines are blurring between wrong and right… you’re getting closer to the other side…. So take a bite, make a mark— stop your fumbling in the dark of night! Just walk away from Light. Just walk away…"
Mega slowly brought up his hand.
Viper saw the glint of metal too late.
KKKKKKLLLLLLIIIIIUUUURK!
Viper screamed in pain as he was stabbed right in the neck. The snakes bit at his foe, but it was too little, too late—he was stabbed again, the acid eating away toward his core, exposing his circuitry.
BLAM.
{Epilogue II}CLICK.Nico turned off the radio with a grave expression. There was silence in the bar. Cardinal leaned against the counter, putting a mug of coffee to his lips. "What a way to go." Shadow spoke with the same stoic tone as always, with only a hint of his new emotions noticeable. "He died as he lived. A lying coward." "I wouldn't say that," Siam commented softly. He ran his fingers through his hair when the others turned their attention to him. ((Art by dA user P-RO)) "I think he may have actually believed what he was saying." Cardinal grimaced. "That only makes it all the more revolting." There was another stretch of silence, broken by the chime of the door. They all tensed and looked over—but relaxed once they saw who it was. "Wow, that is certainly a big stack of clothes." Speedy peeked out from behind the pile. "Well, there are five of us. I was fortunate to find things in our size. It took a week of work at the Turnstyles to pay off this stuff, by the way—this is as good as it will get." He set the pile on the counter, allowing the others to pick through it. Siam seemed disappointed in how ragged the clothes were, but was wise enough not to comment. "You really think this will work?" "Yes." Speedy put a hand to his head, moving his bangs aside. "Without the exterior armor… if we wear clothes, most people won't look twice." Shadow glanced at the jeans that Nico had handed him. "…These offer very little protection." "I could hardly buy bullet-proof jackets, and that would do little good against a good number of weapons," Speedy snorted. "We're already listed as dead, and many of us have looked it right in the face. You can only outrun Death for so long, and armor won't help. Changing your lifestyle will. You need to learn to blend in." Cardinal put on a hand-me-down, over-sized jacket. "We just got finished listening to the last journal of DWN - 022." "…So he's fallen, then…" "Yes. You were right—I don't think you would have taken it well. It was for the best that you were somewhere else." ((Art by dA user LegendaryFrog, screenshot because size)) The racer looked away grimly. "I watched five of my brothers die before my eyes and dueled Death himself at high noon. I've seen enough of war. I don't know about you, but I don't want to live forever—if I have to go through something like this every few years, I don't know if I can stand it." Shadow closed his eyes. "It is wise to look to the current conflict before trying to face the future." "The current conflict is over." Speedy looked over at Cardinal with a frown. "I guess Cardinal didn't tell you." "What do you mean by that?" Nico demanded. They all looked over at Cardinal. His expression was mostly unreadable, still hidden by his sunglasses. Unlike the others, he still had his helmet on. "…Wily is dead." Even Speedy was surprised by this. "What?! I didn't hear that part!" "I came too late to do much other than save that idiot from being crushed. He was in bad shape as it was, though. Who knows if he survived." Siam curled his lip. "So Gamma is fallen and Wily is dead, but that Menace still lives?" "Shut it, Siam. Have you seen the death we have? No. Just ask your older brother," Cardinal warned, "and he can tell you that revenge will eat away at you worse than poison. There has been enough death! Maybe now, if Light truly loves his precious son, he'll remove that [glitching] combat programming that Rock was never meant to have." Siam lowered his eyes at this, put into his place by the combat-hardened empty glares of his older brothers. "Do we have to go into hiding, then?" "It would be for the best. The war is just over. It will be a few years before we can even think about looking for sanctuary. We should stay in hiding until then." Cardinal pushed his empty coffee mug away. "I recommend building our own place somewhere without a lot of people. We could go to Western Kansas and build our own small town, complete with a generator." "In hiding, or at least a low profile." Speedy put his arms akimbo. "A generator would draw too much attention—the military does have satellites, you know. Let's not make ourselves too obvious. Why not just go to a border town here in Texas and live in a place where people don't ask too many questions?" Cardinal looked up. "A town with a known presence of a high percentage of illegals? That would help us be in a place the feds don't keep an eye on how, exactly?" ((Art by dA user Zorayda; no Speedy doesn't look quite like this, but I chose it because I loved the expression and the outfit Screenshot because size)) "…Okay, perhaps you have a point, but we should still live more simply. Not everyone is a city boy." "What on earth makes you think that I'm a 'city boy'? You can't the fact that we'd have more to do in Kansas City than in Redención." The two of them began to argue. Nico stepped between them quickly. "Hey, why don't we put it to a vote?" "That sounds fair," Shadow noted. "We can vote between Kansas and Texas." Siam grinned. "Would I get to vote twice?" Speedy laughed at this and Cardinal shook his head. "Forget it. We can make that sort of decision later." ———————— After helping Pops close up shop for the night but before the building was locked down for the night, the band of brothers went out to the porch to watch the stars in the night sky. A content melody rose out into the dry air, two of the brothers playing instruments in unison. They heard the muffled sound of Pops joining in on the piano in the bar, and they began to join in in song. "Sing us a song, you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight 'Cause we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright…"

{Credits I—Music}As with its predecessor I Am the Law, Empire of Corruption was inspired by song. The Megas have released four albums, one EP, and two singles based off of the classic Capcom games MegaMan, MegaMan 2, and MegaMan 3. These songs form the basic foundation for the plot of the series. The songs and where they are used are listed below. Links are not included for most of them due to Forum regulations, but you can (and should) look them up on iTunes. Get Equipped (2008) and Get Acoustic (2010) - I Want to be The One: This song formed the basis for the Menace's sole narrative chapter in IAtL, namely his beliefs on the fights with the Robot Masters.
- The Annihilation of Monsteropolis: Not only did this song form the basis for Airman's fight with the Menace, it also shaped his personality in IAtL. The incident would be brought up again in EoC.
- Metal Dance: Basis for Metal's personality and last battle in IAtL.
- Carved from Mighty Oak: Basis for Wood's personality and last battle in IAtL. The lyrics also gave the use of the phrase "Machines of War".
- Promise of Redemption: Basis for Bubble's personality and last battle in IAtL. Continues to be the foundation for Pisces' laid back attitude, which is seen in his Taco appearances and mentioned very specifically in EoC.
- Man on Fire: Basis for Heat's personality and last battle in IAtL.
- Blue Like You: Basis for Flash's personality and last battle in IAtL. Stated to be one of the Ambassador's least favorite songs. Specifically referenced in EoC.
- Programmed to Fight: Basis for Crash's personality and last battle in IAtL. Repeatedly mentioned in IAtL and EoC, and continues to influence Jaden's attitude in interactions at the Taco.
- Lamentations of a War Machine: Mentioned briefly in EoC, forms the basis for Mega's interactions with his sister.
- THE QUICK AND THE BLUE
Stated to be the Ambassador's favorite song, this masterpiece was the inspiration for Showdown at High Noon, which was the rough draft for what would become I Am the Law. Speedy's personality and character are drawn from the song; his whole story is given with the perspective of this song in mind. The song is referenced repeatedly in the sequel Empire of Corruption as well, and is the source of the infamous arc-phrase "Death wears BLUE".
——————————— Megatainment (2009) - Look What You've Done
This song was referenced in Dr. Wily's mutterings while making Snakeman a new helmet, and helped form his (slightly) more sympathetic relationship with Dr. Light.
————————— Sparked a War (2010) - You've Sparked a War
- You've Sparked a coustic
Both of these songs were referenced in Mega's fight with Sparkman, as well as Gemini's description of said brother's personality. Originally Spark was to have a narrative piece in Chapter 21, but this was changed. The song is still great, though.
—————————— History Repeating: Blue (2012) and History Repeating: Red (2013) - History Repeating Pt. 2 (One Last Time): This song is referenced in EoC when Cardinal and Rock interact, especially during their first fight . It forms part of the foundation for how Cardinal treats Rock.
- Can’t Stop the Top: This song is referenced in Siam's description of Top's personality and his final fight with the Menace.
- Don’t Mess with Magnetman: This song was one of the inspirations for Empire of Corruption. Originally, Nico was not given a name, any first-person narrative chapters, and not projected to survive. Repeated listening to the song changed this, and Nico was given a few chapters of first-person narration. This helped develop his character to the point where he became an Ensemble Darkhorse. This song forms the foundation of Nico's character, especially his more compassionate side.
- You’ve Sparked a War: (See entry above)
- Walk Away from Light: This song was the other inspiration for Empire of Corruption, and formed the basis of Viper's character. It was the sole reason the plotline with Viper's tyrannical Starscream nature was developed, and why he was the villain he was. Viper's role as tempter changed the emphasis and meaning of the title "Empire of Corruption"; the title was conceived in 2011, some time after IAtL finished. It was originally meant to focus on Wily's attempts at building an Empire. Once Walk Away from Light entered the scene, the focus shifted to the Corruption side of the matter, and referred primarily to Viper's role in the story. The story's avatar and advertisement banners were chosen to follow this theme. (Credit for the banner goes to Scrac, who found the fonts upon request.)
- Gamma Unchained: This song forms much of the rest of the foundation for Wily's character, especially the degree of regret and guilt he feels at his actions. It is referenced in his conversation with Dr. Light.
- I'm Not the Break Man: This song is the basis for Cardinal's personality and is referenced repeatedly, especially in his final fight with Mega in EoC. This song was the reason Cardinal gained such a large role in the story: he was not originally included. (It is expected that this song will be included in History Repeating: Red.)
There are two other songs that feature in EoC. One is The Fragrance of Dark Coffee from Turnabout Jazz Soul. This, along with an artwork of Blues playing the saxophone, helped form the basis for the idea of Cardinal's musical talents. The other song featured plays at the end: Piano Man is by Billy Joel.
{Credits II—Art}NONE OF THE IMAGES ARE MINEFor the first time, the Ambassador chose to include art in a Forum-based story. All the art was found on Tumblr or deviantArt through searches, with the exception of the work by Chloe Brown, as she was already known to the Ambassador at the time of writing the story. The artists (and their works, if there are multiple) are listed below. Links are not included due to Forum regulations, but you can look them up on deviantArt or Tumblr. Note: "NF" designates that a piece was not shown in the story itself, but was often referred to for inspiration. "(T)" means the source is Tumblr exclusive, not from dA. TOP CONTRIBUTORS- Chloe Brown: A very, very special thanks to Chloe for her continued inspriation and support. Chloe's depiction of the RobotMasters and her introduction of The Megas to others was crucial to the development of the story and the characters.
