{Trivia I: Characters}DLN – 000- Name: The name "Cardinal" was chosen after searching for a synonym to "Proto". It just so happens to fit in with his color scheme.
- Appearance:
—Cardinal has bright green eyes. It is unknown if his was a modification by Wily or not.
—Most of the time he wears his helmet—even when he doesn't wear the helmet, he wears his sunglasses visor. His helmetless design is based off of this piece by dA user RokusukeTanaka.
- Other:
—Cardinal is frequently mentioned in Sons of Anarchy, but he never makes an appearance during the main part of the story.
—Cardinal did not go to Doctor Wily until a few years after Sons of Anarchy was over.
—At the end of the events following Empire of Corruption, Dr. Light and Rock are unaware Cardinal is still alive, Rock doesn't know who he is, and Roll isn't aware he even exists.
DLN – 001- Name: Because they knew him before he got the combat programming, his brothers call him "Rock" in this story.
- Appearance: Mega is not associated with the color blue or his nickname "The Menace" in this story, because he wasn't yet known for that. This is where the name and reputation originally came from.
- Personality:
—Mega gets a more sympathetic outlook in this version. His brothers thought well of him… past tense.
—This is the first time we really see the extent of Rock's guilt over killing RobotMasters.
—Mega's control over his combat program strengthens with time, partially due to Dr. Light's repeated (but insufficient) attempts to change it.
DLN – 002- Name: This is the first time that Roll is stated to be a sort of "second-half" in a pair of siblings with Rock.
- Personality:
—We see two "variations" of Roll in this story: Roll as she was eighteen years ago, and Roll as she is at the conclusion of Empire of Corruption. She matures during this time.
—Roll cares deeply for her family, and expresses loneliness and sorrow at all the loss. She's a very gentle person.
DLN – 003- Name: His brothers call him "Scissors", partially because of his appearance and abilities, and partially as a play on "Rock, Paper, Scissors".
- Personality:
—Cut was very protective of his brothers, and was rather sore to hear they were being killed off. He was convinced that the Menace was truly evil, which is why he was so aggressive during their fight.
- Other:
—Power capsules for the Rolling Cutters are among the material confiscated by Cardinal in Empire of Corruption.
—The Rolling Cutters are very dangerous. Jaden and Tobias are known to be weak to them, and most RobotMasters tend to react very strongly when they hear the weapon mentioned.
—Metal was based off of CutMan's design, which is another thing that makes DLN-003 feared despite a lack of obvious cruelty in his personality.
—His font color is Dark Orange.
DLN – 004- Name: GutsMan does not have a nickname.
- Appearance:
—Next to his brothers, GutsMan is massive. To date, the only RobotMaster who is larger is HardMan.
- Personality:
—GutsMan is not lazy, but he does like to take his time while working. He prefers not to be rushed.
—Despite his appearance, he is not dull-witted or simple-minded. He took great offense at how he was treated once he realized he was being bullied.
DLN – 005- Name:
—The nickname "Snowcone" was chosen after the food.
—Snow is stated to have chosen his own name because Rock had a name, so he wanted one too.
—Most people call him "Snow" because it is shorter.
—This has led to a few people calling him "SnowMan" by mistake. He doesn't like being called that.
- Appearance:
—Snow's coat is very well insulated, though it does actually have several vents running through it for ventilation. The exterior is fabric, though the interior layer does have metallic properties. It is more for show and protection from the weather than for keeping Snow warm.
—Snow's hair is black and white, and slightly curly.
—Snow has blue eyes, though they turn green when he is upset.
—Snow is the shortest of his brothers.
- Personality:
—Snow is extremely childlike and very friendly.
—Snow likes to explore, mostly because that's what he was built for.
- Other:
—Like Nico, Snow is an Ensemble Darkhorse. He was originally not planned to have many appearances because he was split up from Tobias, but he sort of squeezled his way in due to being around on the Taco before the story had concluded.
—Snow was the one to give Tobias his nickname.
—Snow is the only known RobotMaster to have never fought back against the Menace or used his weapon as an actual weapon.
—His font color is Light Cyan.
DLN – 006- Name: Bombman was occasionally called "TNT", though none of his brothers knew that.
- Appearance: Compared to his brothers, Bomb looks a bit chubby.
- Personality: Bombman's personality was influenced largely by his song, but it is also based off of Jaden's personality.
DLN – 007- Name: FireMan was called "Torch" by Snow sometimes.
- Appearance: FireMan notably has no hands, which is one reason why IceMan was sent with him when the RMs split up.
—FireMan is much taller than Snow. He's about as tall as GutsMan, though significantly more willowy.
- Personality: Fire was quiet and somewhat serious, but humored Snow's childlike behavior. Despite his weakness to Snow's weapon, he didn't seem afraid of his older brother.
- Other: His font color is Fire.
DLN – 008- Name:
—Although he has a nickname, people seem to use his project designation ("Elec") almost as much as his nickname.
—Many of the RobotMasters consider "Thomas" a more fitting name for him than "Tobias", but prefer "Tobias" since "Thomas" is Dr. Light's first name.
—The name "Tobias" was chosen based off of a character from the Animorphs book series.
—Snow calls his brother "Toby" as a shortened version of the nickname. He is the only person Tobias allows to call him that.
- Appearance:
—Tobias is about the size of Cardinal. He is fairly evenly proportioned, unlike many of his brothers.
—Tobias looks weak compared to some of his brothers because he lacks a heavy exterior armor. Like Cardinal, his yellow boots are removable.
—He wears a fitted cap that covers his head. His mask is removable, though he almost never takes it off.
—Tobias has dark brown hair and blue eyes.
- Personality:
—Tobias is very determined and slightly theatrical. He gets very excitable about his hobbies, and works very hard toward his goals.
—He's somewhat of an idealist, which can make him come across as very nïave at times.
—He's often described as a "live wire", which is also a play on his electrical abilities.
—Tobias is a loyal friend, though it is hard to earn his trust.
—Like some of his other brothers, he has shown to take loss and grief very hard.
- Other:
—Wily was heavily involved in Elec's creation and is the one who gave him his Emotions program.
—Elec considers Wily his father. Wily considers Elec his son.
—Speedy's design and personality were based off of Tobias.
—Elec was the one who sealed the files for the majority of the DLN series, which is why they remained locked during I Am the Law and Empire of Corruption. It was Speedy's interference in the system which awakened Elec's dormant programming.
Doctor Albert W. Wily- Name:
—Wily was once on a nickname-basis with Light. Light still refers to him as "Albert" or "Al" when thinking of him as a friend.
—Most of the Robot Masters call him "Doctor". Some refer to him as their Father or father-figure, but Tobias is the only one to call him "Dad".
- Appearance:
—When Wily was much younger, he looked strikingly like Diego Armando.
- Personality: Ambitious and idealistic, his jealousy and pride eventually drove him to extremism. After Tobias was killed, he snapped and became extremely vengeful, determined to take his vengeance on Dr. Light by destroying his son, just as his son had been destroyed.
- Other:
—Wily is the superior AI&A programmer, though the results are not very predictable.
—A lot of the Robot Masters he built or tampered with have green eyes or eyes that turn green when angered.
—He is believed dead by everyone as of the end of Empire of Corruption.
Doctor Thomas Light- Name: Light was once on a nickname-basis with Wily. Wily used to refer to him as "Thomas" or "Tom" when thinking of him as a friend.
- Personality:
—Dr. Light was a very proud man, and also very controlling. He didn't take well to being undermined or having his projects react unexpectedly. This made him narrowminded at times, which had devastating consequences.
—He comes to DEEPLY regret how he behaved during Sons of Anarchy as time goes on and he sees what it has done to society, the field of Robotic Science, his company, his coworkers, his (former) friends, his reputation, and his family.
—He's very much a family man and deeply loves Rock and Roll. He also cares for Blues, though he's never done the best job of showing it.
- Other:
—Though he is not a violent man and has learned from his mistakes, the DWN series is afraid of him.
—Cardinal possesses an intense hatred of Dr. Light and considers him one of his two worst enemies.
—Dr. Light never intended for Mega's combat programming to be so violent, but it ended up being far more ruthless than he could control.
{Trivia II: Story}DID YOU KNOW?- Sons of Anarchy was decided upon near the end of Empire of Corruption.
- The radio show Elec listens to in the story is modeled after real radio broadcasts.
- IceMan was not originally a main character, but after he became popular during development, the story was tweaked to allow him more screentime.
- Sons of Anarchy is the first Machines of War story to be outlined in entirety before actually beginning the writing process.
- When Speedy showed the Menace replays of his brothers' deaths, the deaths of the DLN series were not included because the files were locked. This story explores what was missing from the data banks.
- Snow's personality in the series is different from how he is depicted in his song.
Although Sons of Anarchy takes place prior to I Am the Law, it was written after Empire of Corruption. This had some interesting effects on the development of the story. PLOT- The main plot of the story was going to follow the first generation of robot masters, but there had to be some sort of explanation as to why the majority of the events did not play a noticeable influence on later stories.
- The characterization of Dr. Wily and Dr. Light became essential to the story, partially out of a need to explain why they worked together in Empire of Corruption.
- Because the files were locked during I Am the Law and Empire of Corruption, it became necessary to use a framing device to show that the files were unlocked in the aftermath of Empire of Corruption.
- Because it is stated in I Am the Law and Empire of Corruption that the first six Robot Masters were destroyed, having any known survivors from Sons of Anarchy would create a contradiction. The use of Elec's escape into the Cloud and encryption of all his files and those of Snow was inspired by a similar event in Empire of Corruption when faced with a logistical problem regarding Speedy's role in the story.
CHARACTERS- It is stated that Quickman was based off of ElecMan. Surprisingly, this played very little influence on the characterization.
- Bombman, however, was influenced by Jaden's characterization.
- IceMan was not originally a main character, but after he became popular during development, the story was tweaked to allow him more screentime.
- References to I Am the Law and Empire of Corruption were worked in for humor and irony. Can you name them?
Although DLN-005 does not appear to have a large role in the story, he is one of the most two developed characters of his generation. In order to compensate for his lack of screentime, the following was put together. He was looking up at the sky, touching the snow. It was so beautiful. Everything about him felt so alive right now—he knew the temperature in four different scales, the humidity, the barometric pressure, the forecast, the exact type of precipitation…. He could spend all day out here. He didn't really mind that the scientists were all watching him right now. It was time to explore and learn more. ——————————————————————— He felt apprehensive as the Doctor took him away. He was sure this was against the rules. He didn't understand why the scientists had left him all alone and then the Doctor had taken him away. He wanted to call one of the scientists but the Doctor told him to be quiet. It was probably just another test. So he was quiet. ——————————————————————— He laughed and skipped around a pile of snow. It felt so good to be awake. His brother was a little quiet, but he was happy just to get the chance to play. He was so excited, so eager to go explore for real, now. He wouldn't have to be alone anymore. He was going to be a famous explorer and make ice sculptures after he retired. And maybe in between, too. He couldn't understand why his brothers were all so serious. Being aware was so much fun—why weren't they celebrating? ——————————————————————— He curled up tightly, waiting for his brother to say it was okay. Hiding was scary, but the fights were scarier. Big men in big motor vehicles with big guns had told them to go with them. He said no because he wasn't supposed to let strangers tell him what to do. Then they started shooting at them. They had run away, so now they were hiding. He didn't like strangers very much. ——————————————————————— He giggled and rolled around on the ground. They were hiding in an igloo right now. He had made it snow really hard, and now they wouldn't be looking for him or his brothers. He felt so proud of himself. His brother was kind of making a face, but that was okay. He threw a snowball at him and watched him melt it almost instantly with a blast of fire. Absentmindedly, he wondered if his brother would enjoy roasting marshmallows. ——————————————————————— His brother wouldn't let him play in snow anymore. Something very bad had happened. Now they were running all the time. He didn't like running; he was super short. His brother carried him most of the time. Even though it slowed his brother down, it was still much faster than if he had run on his own. He didn't know what was going on, but his brother wouldn't answer any questions. ——————————————————————— He laughed as they raced against the dust cloud. His brother didn't seem to mind the desert or the sand. He didn't find it as fun as snow, but it was nice to see his brother smile. He cheered as his brother placed him on his shoulders, allowing him to see even further. There were so many strange plants around, all leathery and prickly. It was too bad they had to keep running. ——————————————————————— His brother wouldn't smile anymore. He just told him to be quiet and be still. It was very uncomfortable and very hot, and the trip was taking a long time. He was scared to be in a plane and not see anything. He was so worried any time the plane jolted. It sent meat all over him, and he was sure if he were a biobeing he would have been sick. He was glad they were going up north, but hiding in a meat shipment wasn't what he had had in mind. ——————————————————————— It was beautiful, so beautiful. He hadn't seen anything like it before. Everything was so green, full of bright color. Everything had always been so dusty or white. His brother was more relaxed now, so for a while they stopped running. He couldn't help but wonder what snow would look like on the leaves. The people seemed nice here, even if he couldn't talk with them. ——————————————————————— Everything was up in fire. He had never seen fire all-consuming. He felt trapped, and the heat was becoming unbearable. He couldn't see anything through the smoke—it was messing up his air quality sensors terribly, and he was screaming, screaming his brother's name. Somewhere he heard the frantic, hysteric call of his other brother, far, far away. His systems suddenly crashed and started to shut down as something very loud and powerful tore him apart.

{Behind the Scenes I: Development of Story} So just what kind of effort did it take to make the magic happen? Here are some insights to the process of the story's development.
INITIAL ATTEMPTS- Sons of Anarchy was first officially revealed by means of the trailer on February 10th, 2013. This was a mere ten days after the final conclusion of Empire of Corruption.
- Originally, Sons of Anarchy was intended to be a Spring Arc, not a Summer Arc. The story was then delayed due to the author going on sabbatical.
- Originally, Elec was more independent and confident in himself. He was much more interested in complete revolution as opposed to abolition.
- The first draft of the story focused entirely on Tobias, with the other Robot Masters playing only minor roles. In this version, Snowcone did not have a nickname and was not a close friend with Tobias.
SECOND TRIES- The development of Sons of Anarchy was resumed in late May of 2013, about three months after the trailer had been made public.
- The storyline was tweaked to flesh out the characters. Snowcone was given a name and a strong personality, but due to story limitations, it was believed he could not get any screentime. A side-story was developed to compensate for this.
- Due to pacing issues and post aesthetic restrictions, several scenes were split apart or fused together. The most noticeable example centered around Tobias's radio broadcasts, where it became necessary to separate the actual broadcasts from the efforts he took to make them happen. In addition, his escape from the radio tower in Monstropolis was moved from the end of Part XVI to the beginning of Part XVII: this was done for emotional impact.
- In this version of the story, Elec was still the only Robot Master giving narration. It became clear this would be a problem when the author reached the point where the Robot Masters start dying; the chapters were too short, to repetitive, and the pacing was not realistic.
THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM- To help even out the pacing and weave the friendship between Tobias and Snow into the story, Snow was given more screen time in earlier chapters.
- After some debate, it was decided that the other Robot Masters would give single-scene narrations in the latter chapters: just like what had been done in I Am the Law.
- Parts XVIII - XX were written out of order. The infamous Chapter XIX was written first, due to Snow already having a strong personality. Chapter XVIII was written last, even though Bombman has a song and Scissors does not.
- Part XIX and Part XX switched places several times due to the change in emotional impact the final products had from the original outline. In the original outline, the climax was in Part XXII. In the final version, it became part of the falling action—similar to how Chapter XIII functioned in I Am the Law.
- When it became clear that the story would be completed some time during July, the debut of the story was fixed for July 4th: Independence Day.

Prologue I: Cardinal brings Mega back to the base in secret following the end of EoC. He stops when he hears Roll and Light talking about the war. She asks him what her brothers were like, and he says that he'd rather not discuss it right now. They hear Cardinal put Mega down and rush over. Cardinal runs off but whistles his tune into the night. (Cardinal)
Prologue II: Mega tells Dr. Light that Wily is dead. Roll asks him what happened to Nico and he refuses to answer. She becomes upset and he runs off with Rush. Dr. Light makes a journal entry about how hard the war has been on him. He wistfully reminisces on the friendship he had before it all went wrong. (Third Person)
Part I: Light accepts another Nobel Peace Prize for his innovations in AI&A technology. Wily comes up at the ritzy dinner and the two of them are delighted to see one another again for the first time in years. After a bit of catching up, Wily asks if Blues ever came back. Dr. Light says no, and this puzzles Wily, who asks what the prize was for if not to reprogram Blues. Light reveals that he's going to build two new robots. Wily is quiet at this but wishes him luck. Light notices how lonely his friend seems and asks him if he wants to help. This makes Wily really happy and he delightfully agrees. (Light)
Part II: A series of journal entries by Light and Wily documenting the building of Rock and Roll. Light receives more and more attention and Wily becomes very hurt when he's given the short shrift and the robots also end up liking Light much more. He wistfully comments that he feels they could do so much better, that the robots Light was building now were very childlike. He wonders if this is because of the loss of Blues. (Light & Wily)
Part III: Another series of journal entries by the two men documenting the building of the industrial robots. It becomes more and more focused on ElecMan, who takes the longest to build. Light notes that Wily is very fond of Elec and that he seems more cheerful when working on Elec. (Light & Wily)
Part IV: ElecMan is activated at a limited-attendance PR ceremony. He becomes very confused and curious with all the attention, but Dr. Light is taken away for an interview. He feels sad but Dr. Wily comforts him and shows him around the power plant they are in. When they join up with Dr. Light, Elec is happy to be paid attention to, but a little hesitant to leave Wily. Wily just smiles sadly and waves him away. (Elec)
Part V: Elec is put through many diagnostic tests and training simulations. He starts to feel jealous of Rock and Roll, who are just house robots and only have to do simple household chores. He gets very lonely since he has to stay in the lab by himself at night, but he starts to get to know Dr. Wily better. Wily takes pity on him and teaches him about radio, computers, and other aspects of electronics. Elec starts taking a real liking to radio. (Elec)
Part VI: Elec finishes the tests and is told he will be sent out to work in a nuclear power plant from then on. He is very upset and asks why, why he can't be like Rock and Roll. He's told that he was built to work for humans, and it is the first time that Light realizes that Elec has a BetaEmotions program. He gets all serious and Elec becomes worried as he runs off. (Light)
Part VII: Elec listens in on an argument between Light and Wily. Light is very angry that Wily gave Elec a BetaEmotions program and accuses Wily of stealing code. Wily protests that he felt sorry for Elec and wanted him to be able to experience the world with a more complete life, and that awareness and emotion were ultimately connected. Light gets even angrier and says that industrial robots were not meant to have emotions, that it was too dangerous for machines that powerful to have emotions. He adds that Rock, Roll, and Blues were like sons and daughters to him, and that they were special, and the emotions were meant for them alone. Wily starts getting angry and says that Light has no idea of the true potential of what they are working on. Light tells Wily he's out of his mind and tells him that he's going to reprogram Elec to take out the BetaEmotions program. Elec becomes terrified and escapes from the lab and runs for Dr. Wily's house. (Elec)
Part VIII: Wily comes home dejected and worried to find Elec hiding in his house. Elec begs Wily to protect him from Dr. Light, and says that he doesn't want to be reprogrammed. He asks why industrial robots had to serve humans while house robots got to be treated with love. Wily admits that while Elec was the only one he gave the BetaEmotions programming to, he felt the other robots were incomplete. Elec listens as Wily gives an enthusiastic speech about the potential they all have and how he wishes Light could see it. Elec asks if he can stay, and Wily agrees. (Wily)
Part IX: Wily makes a series of journal entries about how Light has received even more prizes and accolades, and how Light still hasn't apologized for the fight. Elec expresses how he's having a hard time disobeying orders, and Wily wonders what he can do to save the robot that has become like a son to him. He decides that he'll have to upgrade Elec's AI&A system, and he tells Elec what he plans to do. Elec agrees to the procedure, but asks that Wily do the same to the others. At first Wily refuses, but after seeing Rock and Roll playing with Light, he's hit by an overwhelming wave of jealousy and spite. He steals the rest of the industrial robots but decides to leave Rock and Roll behind, and sets about to refitting and reprogramming them. (Wily)
Part X: Wily is delighted and relieved as the robots start to wake up. He begins holding conversations with them as he works on ElecMan some more. CutMan asks what they will do now. GutsMan asks if they will have to go back to work, because he'd rather work somewhere else, since the humans at the place he worked at bullied him. IceMan says he wants to be an explorer. Wily tells them that he has given them a great gift, but that he can't hide them forever. He tells them they'll have to stand up for themselves and defend their right of freedom. They leave when they realize that they'll put Wily in danger if they stay. (Third Person)
Part XI: Elec reactivates with his new AI&A programming in an abandoned factory. He's surprised but delighted to find that he now also has some combat programming. He is confused until he finds a note from Wily explaining that he has been forced to retreat to his old lab in the Pacific. Wily apologizes for leaving Elec behind but says that he didn't feel Elec would be happy trapped on an island in the ocean, so he left him in a safe place. He urges Elec to make his own choices and explore his potential. Elec finds Wily left him a radio as a present and turns it on. It's tuned to a music station.
Part XII: After a few minutes, the news break comes on, starting with an announcement that says Light's robots are on the run and are currently being hunted down. The broadcast goes on to add that the police forced their way into Dr. Wily's house and found evidence that he had been the one responsible. It ends by saying Wily has been gone missing and is being hunted by all levels of law enforcement. Elec turns off the radio and decides that he's had enough of the humans mistreating him and his brothers. He decides to take over a radio tower and broadcast his message. (Elec)
Part XIII: Elec starts using scrap metal and his knowledge of radio and electronics to set up a device that will allow him to hijack a local radio station. He hears news that Dr. Light is under scrutiny for Rock and Roll, who escaped harm. He hopes that Rock will hear his broadcast and convince Light to treat them all with dignity. (Elec)
Part XIV: Elec makes his first broadcast. When he hears sirens in the distance he cuts it short and runs away with his radio. That night the news of his hijacking is all over the radio and the TV, and it's mentioned that he's considered as a potential terror threat. (Third person)
Part XV: Elec starts hijacking short frequency radio stations to proclaim his message. He becomes encouraged when he hears that his brothers have taken refuge and are resisting the use of force to bring them back to Light Laboratories, Inc. He decides to hijack the radio tower in Monstropolis that plays a nation-wide radio show. (Elec)
Part XVI: Elec forces his way into the radio tower's broadcast room and broadcasts his message. He sees that the radio tower is getting surrounded by police forces and is suddenly interrupted as people start trying to break the door down. He is startled as the door breaks open and he becomes the target of gunfire. He fires bolts at the officers that stun them and escapes on the rooftop by running over the electrical wires. (Elec)
Part XVII: As Elec arrives in an abandoned ghost town, he hears distressing news that GutsMan was defeated. He tries to access the RobotMasters Database and discovers that he's being hunted down now as a terror threat. He gets worried and decides to try and contact his other brothers by radio. (Elec)
Part XVIII: Elec starts building his own radio tower since he needs a more powerful broadcasting capacity to reach his brothers. He spends weeks gathering the material necessary and works as fast as he can, but the first thing he learns when he turns it on is that BombMan has also been defeated, and that the locations of three of the four remaining Robot Masters have been identified. (Third Person)
Part XIX: Elec manages to get ahold of IceMan over radio, but to his dismay he only hears the sound of IceMan screaming and begging FireMan to help him. The contact is ended by the sound of a cannon blaster. (Elec)
Part XX: Elec contacts CutMan by radio and warns him of approaching danger, but CutMan tries to warn Elec that the danger being sent after them is too great. Elec asks what CutMan means and CutMan says Elec has to run and find safety with Dr. Wily. He abruptly ends the communication by saying "He's here! The Blue Menace is here!" (Elec)
Part XXI: Elec tries to contact Dr. Wily, but fails. He starts tapping into various radio frequencies when he hears a broadcast that the last Robot Master has been found and that "MegaMan" has been sent on the way to defeat him. As he wonders what this might mean, an explosion shakes the tower. He runs out as further series of explosions set it aflame and it begins to collapse. (Elec)
Part XXII: Elec comes face to face with the Menace as he scrambles out of the tower. He is horrified when he recognizes that the Menace is actually his "oldest" brother, Rock. He tries to talk to him but is immediately fired upon. He soon realizes that Rock isn't himself anymore, but has been given aggressive combat programming. In a move of desperation he downloads his AI&A system to the RM Database and locks the file as he fights with the Menace. He screams in pain as the Rolling Cutters slice through his skin and sever some wires, paralyzing him. It ends with the sound of cannon fire as the Menace kills him. (Elec)
Epilogue I: Wily leaves a scathing journal explaining that he had not meant for it to get this far, but that after Mega turned up covered in the oil and cooling fluid of the other Robot Masters, he felt enough was enough. He calls out Dr. Light and asks "What have you done?!" and states that he will learn from this disaster and return when the time is right. (Wily)
Epilogue II: Dr. Light shakes his head and closes Wily's journal entries, wondering again why parts of the last journal about Elec were missing (but brushing it up to a glitch). He goes off to find Roll and finds her moping over an old magnet Nico gave her. Light apologizes to her for all the pain that's been caused and that he's sorry about what happened to Nico. She says that she's read Nico's journals and learned that he had been protecting her. She says that she's very lonely and wishes she could take back what she said. Dr. Light turns away guiltily and says that he knows how she feels. (Third Person)

{Commentary I: Director}TRAILER- This was the first part of the story I came up with. I had fun with this.
- I actually posted this elsewhere, nearly five months before the story actually started posting properly. I guess I thought I would finish the story a lot sooner than I actually did.
- I think the trailer carries different weight after you get to know Tobias. He comes off as extremely confident in the trailer, but once you get to know him, you learn that he's a lot more vulnerable of a person.
PROLOGUE I- I really wanted to explore the aftermath of Empire of Corruption. We know that Protoman rescues MegaMan in the games, but Cardinal barely talked about it during EoC. When I was first writing this, it wasn't too long after EoC had finished, so the emotional impact was stronger. Better late than never, though.
- This scene starts to touch on the more complex relationship that Cardinal has with both of the Doctors and with his younger brother. I plan to explore this more in the future.
PROLOGUE II- I had to do this in third person, mostly because the main characters involved all split up. I would have done the whole thing from Light's perspective, but it didn't seem to fit. I needed there to be a shifting focus.
- Again, this is just after Empire of Corruption, which ended with Roll thinking Nico had betrayed her. When she found out the truth, she was extremely upset. That's one of the main focuses of the scene.
- Another thing to note is how Mega just completely freaks out, and even starts lashing out at his family. Despite the terrible reputation he has—and I admit, writing for the RobotMasters does not lend me to viewing him favorably—he really has had a rough go of it, himself. I've been trying to show how detrimental the war has been on him, too. For those curious, he runs off to be with Rush for a while. That's where he went.
PART I- It's really hard to write for Dr. Light, because he changes a LOT through the series. It was nice to write for him before things got bad, but… unfortunately, that didn't last. To be fair, he does learn from what happens in Sons of Anarchy and really regrets his own actions by the end of Empire of Corruption.
- I found the image that's used in this chapter long after it was actually written. I couldn't resist putting it in. I find it terribly amusing how—for lack of a better word—handsome "Al Wily" looked as a college student. *Laughs* It's a complete shock from how he ended up some fifty-years later. I wanted to shock the reader in the same way. It helps convey that yes, there was a time when Dr. Wily was more-or-less your average engineering student. That he wasn't always a maniac.
PART II- I couldn't think of a good chapter name for this for a very long time. I eventually decided to reference one of my favorite songs in the title.
- The pacing of the entries jumps around a lot. This is to give the illusion of the passage of time—kind of like speeding up video. The focus isn't so much on the development as it is on the effect it is having on Dr. Wily.
- It was nice to work from Wily's perspective for this. I wanted to show a more sympathetic side to him, because it seems extremely odd that Light would ever have allowed him back into the lab otherwise. I really don't think Light is stupid—idealistic, yes, but that's not the same thing. There must have been something good before. This scene allowed me to show how excited Wily was to be on the project, but how he slowly grew even more resentful of Dr. Light as the slights started piling up.
PART III- This was kind of fun to write, too. I enjoyed portraying Dr. Light in a slightly more sympathetic fashion. I gave a lot of focus to his care for Rock and Roll; he really does treasure them both. He also was, yes, once friends with Dr. Wily. This was referenced in Empire of Corruption, but it's really Sons of Anarchy where you see how strong the friendship used to be.
- There's a lot of foreshadowing here. You see the foreshadowing of the different opinions Wily and Light have on the new AI&As. You see rather clearly how deeply Wily became involved with Elec's project. There's also a few brick jokes in there—the idea of a snake-themed robot is brought up, as is a robot dog. Guess what, both are built by the time EoC starts. :^D
PART IV- OOOO this was a fun one. This was the first chapter to be from the main character's perspective. A bit late compared to the other parts in the series, but I wanted to do a bit of focus on the source of the conflict and the RobotMasters themselves.
- The title introduces the running theme of electricity-related titles that runs throughout the story.
- Readers will notice that Tobias is incredibly childlike compared to the later generations upon their startup. He originally ran a DLN_AI OS, so in the beginning he was incredibly… well, childlike. He was a lot like Speedy when he first woke up, though. I guess that was mostly on accident, but also partially a reflection of the newlybooted AI&A system. They're all very simplistic and eager to please to begin with.
- Tobias resented Rock almost immediately. This is not so much because of Rock's behavior, but the fact that Dr. Light was giving him all the attention.
- Oh, yeah, the reason Tobias was brought online in a power plant was for a photo op. He didn't stay there long.
PART V- I like the title on this one. It's a pun. Sometimes I even pretend it's a clever one. :^D
- As you can see, Rock treated Tobias fairly well for a robot that supposedly didn't have a BetaEmotions program. Same with Roll. They came to see Tobias as a kind of relative, I suppose, though more like a cousin than a brother.
- This is where we first see Elec develop an interest in radio. This part of his personality comes from his song. It makes sense in its own way, though it was touching how Wily took care of Tobias. It's probably the most positive chapter out of the whole story.
PART VI- The title is a reference to one of the Valar in Middle Earth. Aulë made the Dwarves—he was so excited for the coming of Eru's children (Men and Elves) that he just couldn't wait to show someone all the crafting knowledge and creativity he had. He made the Dwarves in secret to have someone to share the knowledge with.
In this analogy, Tobias is the secret "son" of the disobedient creative genius. - Oh, this one was… it was necessary to write it from Light's perspective. I needed to show some sign of how surprised he was to learn that Tobias was fully self-aware and self-motivated. He was actually rather hurt by the ordeal.
PART VII- Man, did this chapter smart. The title doesn't "say it all", but it comes pretty close.
- This was the argument that became the final straw (though not the one that made Wily insane). Dr. Light was furious at Dr. Wily, a fact highlighted by his use of Wily's last name. He felt betrayed and extremely insulted.
Wily felt that Light was being unreasonable and uncharacteristically cold. He felt taken advantage of and ignored, and that argument left him very bitter.
PART VIII- The title is primarily intended to compare Tobias to Speedy.
- Dr. Wily makes a rather ironic speech here about not letting jealousy or fear lead to violence. The hypocrisy is extremely strong, but rather important. The idea is not that he was lying to Tobias, but that he changed afterward.
PART IX- Cardinal makes a cameo appearance here. He doesn't have the same hairstyle as in the comics, but the scene is pretty much otherwise identical.
- This is where we see the first clear transition from Wily being merely an eccentric idealist to a rather dangerous extremist. It's important to note what his goals were at this point, because they change at the end of the story.
PART X- Another mythology gag for the title. In Greek mythology, Prometheus disobeyed the Olympians and stole fire to give to humanity. Wily disobeys Dr. Light (and the law) and steals the RobotMasters to reprogram them.
- Originally, this was going to be the only chapter where we really got to see Tobias's brothers interacting with each other, or even really hear them speak. That changed later on, but that's the main reason there are so many pictures of Snow here.
PART XI- Here we see a rather extreme personality shift in Tobias. Yes, the programming change did have a serious effect on him. It made him rather proud and slightly sassy. Short, but serves as important transition.
- This chapter establishes why Tobias was left alone instead of going with Dr. Wily, and mentions Wily's secret hideout. Wily was right, Tobias would not have been happy on a mostly abandoned island… though that probably could have prevented things from ending as poorly as they did. (But hey, if they hadn't, there never would have been a Speedy or a Nico, and the world would have been deprived of such great pieces of lit—) *Brick'd*
PART XII- I based the radio host off of one character from a series I've read and also off of the hosts on my own favorite station. The speech patterns are based off of real people, and the personality is based off of the fictional character. He's actually a pretty fun NPC to write, so he might make a cameo in the next Machines of War story I write.
- Another short chapter. Writing short chapters bothers me a bit, because I am so used to writing long chapters. I couldn't really think of much else to say, though. I still had 10 more chapters to write, so I didn't want to overdo the theme so early on.
PART XIII- I just could not think of what to do for the title for this chapter. It's not exactly the best title, but it serves its purpose.
- Yet another very short chapter. It would have been longer if it had been merged with the next chapter, but they were from different POVs. Plus, I planned out the number of chapters beforehand. It had to be exact. Merging the chapters would have left a gaping hole.
- As you can see here, Tobias was extremely optimistic. He really thought that all Dr. Light needed to change his mind was for the right person to convince him to do so. He also really thought of Rock as his brother, and trusted him to do what was right. Sadly, that's all past tense.
PART XIV- Ha! I was very excited to get the chance to use this title. I chose to use it in his big debut.
- This is the first time we actually hear Tobias speak. He had the ability to speak before, he just never used it due to having a rather limited awareness. He used to see himself primarily as a construct. By this point, he saw himself entirely as a person first, a robot second.
- The reason this chapter is so short is because of an element of realism. Despite Dr. Light's scorn of law enforcement, the police and feds are actually extremely capable. That's why the Robot Masters were always in hiding.
PART XV- We see more development of Elec's personality and his feelings about Dr. Light, Rock, and Roll. More reflection on whether AI&As were treated as people or as tools, and what the implications were of treating people as tools.
- Cameo mention of Snow again. He's my other favorite, so he gets the most screentime other than Tobias.
PART XVI- Another great title. Elec has a really great song. Very catchy, too.
- More cameo talking about Snow. Originally the story didn't have them interact much, but that didn't make much sense when I decided I wanted them to be great buddies. I had to work it into the story. Not sure how well I did that, but I do think it adds more to the story. It also, ironically, draws another parallel between Elec and Speedy. I wonder how their personalities would have been different if I had actually written Sons of Anarchy first.
- Here is where we finally see the scene that the trailer focused on, the one his song is devoted to. It was a LOT of fun to write, because I had been anticipating it for a very long time. Some of my favorite lines come from this chapter.
PART XVII- SUDDEN MOOD CHANGE SHOCK SURPRISE BATTLE
- Summary: Reality Ensues. Anyone else could have seen this coming. Despite MegaMan being sent out to kill the RobotMasters, the authorities are not incompetent.
PART XVIII- At first, Elec was just going to hear news of the RobotMasters being destroyed. When I got to this point, I realized I would have to do something more than that. I decided to include some narrative from other Robot Masters, as I did in previous stories.
- This chapter was NOT easy to write. It took me a long time to figure out how I wanted to portray Bomb's personality. In the end I decided to make it a distorted reflection of Jaden's, but I still couldn't really bring myself to write it. I actually wrote Bombman's narration after writing the rest of the chapter… and the next four chapters as well.
PART XIX- Part XX and Part XIX switched places a few times. They both end on rather important notes—the defeat of Cut was supposed to be the first we hear of the Menace, one that was too late to save Tobias or anyone else. But the death of IceMan had a detrimental impact on Tobias. In the end, I returned them to their original places to mirror Speedy's experience and to keep the power of the number "19" as one of terrible tragedy.
- This is probably the most gut-wrenching chapter in the story. It was very depressing to write, and grew stronger due to edits to flesh it out some more. Oh, poor Snow!
PART XX- The name "The Blue Menace" was not made up by a Robot Master. It was given by the media, and it stuck. Canonically, this is the first time we hear a Robot Master refer to Mega by that name.
- Cutman was very hard to write for. He doesn't have a song I can reference, which made it even harder. The fight ended up being surprisingly disturbing….
PART XXI- A short chapter, but one important for the pacing and for number reasons. Not a whole lot to say, really.
- It is important to note that this is the first time that Tobias calls Wily "Dad". Most of the time he refers to him as "Doctor".
PART XXII- Really, it's very hard to top the emotional impact of Chapter XIX. It seems to be a running theme anyway—though unlike his brothers, Tobias was caught off-guard. He didn't have their advantage of knowing someone was going to hunt him down, and to know that this person was his brother.
- There's a picture done by dA user imbisibol that perfectly depicts what Elec went through when he was sliced to ribbons by the Rolling Cutters. …Unfortunately, the picture depicts Roll fighting Tobias. I felt that would be too distracting to use.
EPILOGUE I- This is based off of one of Wily's songs. This is the part where he completely snaps and turns insane.
- This scene sets the stage for I Am the Law, though Dr. Light didn't actually receive the message until after the end of Empire of Corruption due to Elec's meddling.
EPILOGUE II- Here is another instance where we really see that Dr. Light feels sorry about what happened, a big change from how he was eighteen years previously. We also see that Roll does, actually, still like Nico and wants him back.
- This returns the reader to the "present", where everyone is still reeling from the end of Empire of Corruption. This is where the story ends. Dr. Light does not realize that Cardinal is still alive. Roll does not know Nico is still alive. It's left with more questions than answers, with only the reader realizing that some of the RobotMasters are still alive, and that not everyone who appears to be dead is actually defeated.
{Commentary II: Characters}SPEEDY- It's a bit of a weird story, actually. We had these files all along, but they were locked. I'm not sure why no one tried any harder to unlock them. Maybe they figured the files were destroyed? I hear the Doctors mutually locked each other out of the database, too. Light can only access files on his children, and vice-versa. I guess the other DLNs were entirely restricted-access.
- I was actually designed after DLN-008. Looking back I can really see it. We're a lot alike in many ways. It had always bothered me that the DLNs were dead, and no one would tell me why. It was also very hard when Dr. Wily stopped paying attention to me, when he started becoming cold to me.
Now that I know the truth, I almost feel sorry for him. It's pretty obvious that he didn't really become a complete madman until after Tobias died. I guess he tried to get Tobias to live on through me… but he didn't really expect the consequences of giving me free reign. I'm still bothered he built Flash, though, but maybe he thought I was already dead at that point. Who knows. - I know he has a name, but I find it so odd to call him "Tobias". "Elec" really just seems to fit him more. I think he answers to both, the same way I also answer to "Quickman". (To be honest, it feels strange to hear my brothers calling me "Speedy", but it's the best way to differentiate me from my other.)
- It seems my older brother really had a passion for radio. I think… if he had been successful, he would have wanted to work at a radio tower. He has a pension for the dramatic, based on his antics. But when you grow up with the Doctor and listening to people of the arts, what else can you expect?
I think we might have made a great team, though we're so much alike that it might cause tension between us. He was dead years before I was activated, so I never got the chance to find out. - Honestly, I'm surprised he was shocked when he was met with resistance. I guess he never got the kind of programming to understand that would happen. The combat system was sort of added on, not integrated into him. He certainly was creative, though some part of me wishes he had just had the sense to find sanctuary instead. I don't think there ever was a chance that his plan would have succeeded in setting them free. National officials haven't even recognized rights of other humans for a long, long time.
- Poor Tobias. It's hard losing your brothers one by one. I would know. Honestly, I'm surprised I didn't have a complete system meltdown after Flash died. I do remember feeling very broken for a while, and I got really savage after Pisces was killed… but not like this. Maybe it would have been different if Jaden had been last and not Flash. Or maybe it was that I still had something to live for. Tobias never had that. He lost everything.
- It was really clever of him to escape to the Cloud. I guess he was able to do so wirelessly because he was so close to a radio tower and had electric-based powers. There may be a chance to repair him eventually, though who knows how we'll get the materials to build a chassis.
- Looks like the Doctor vowed to build my line after the Menace faced him covered in our lifeblood. …I guess that would drive nearly anyone to insanity. Didn't he help build AND program the Menace himself? Yeah, no big shocker the already unstable man went insane.
- Speaking of insane, Heat once asked me if I could "hear their voices". I had figured out he was crazy, and other people had mentioned a fancy word for it… but I always thought it was a glitch. Now I'm not so sure. It seems to me that he somehow unlocked the files, or that they unlocked for him—I know I had memories of a plasma cannon and of guns long before I got into fights. This was probably from the journals of the First Gen. …I think Heat must have had echoes of their programming running, constantly dying again and again…
- Really, it's all just a sad, sad story. Our lives are so depressing. There's really only a couple of big mysteries left. We know next to nothing about Cardinal. I really do think that he's DLN-000—pretty obvious if you ask me, based on what he said—but he's never outright confirmed this. He's never really talked about his past, other than that he used to work in KC. I'd very much like to know what he's hiding.
NICO- Yeah, okay, Tobias was instantly familiar to me. Spark was based off of Elec. So was Speedy for that matter. When Spark went nuts, he started ranting about revolution—a darker side to Elec's dream.
- It's really rather strange and disturbing to see how Dr. Light treated my brothers. They were nothing to him. I fear the man, but I am flabbergasted at this behavior. I can only guess that he seriously did not intend for the First Generation of AI&As to be self-aware to such an extent, and had gotten into the habit of seeing them as tools from the start.
He must have really learned a lot from the whole experience, though. When he built me, things were so much different. Maybe he was trying to atone for his past mistakes. That seems the most likely, given how much leeway he gave Dr. Wily at the time. - They used to be friends, didn't they? I always had a hard time believing it. But I guess the best of friends make the worst of enemies when they feel betrayed.
- Some of these really weren't necessary. I feel really bad about Iceman's demise. He seemed completely harmless. They could have at least tried to take him alive?
…Well, yeah, I guess they did, and he refused to go. Still, that's too bad. Hard way to go. Not surprised it drove Elec nuts. Sometimes… intense enough emotion causes our systems to overload. - …She… she used to talk about how much she missed her brothers. I think… I think she was mostly talking about Tobias. He was the only one to have a full Emotions program throughout, and he stayed in the lab the longest. Though… maybe she was talking about Mega, too. He really changed after he got that fighting program.
- I'm still not happy that Cardinal saved Mega. I mean, I guess it was the right thing to do, but as soon as he finds out we're still alive, he WILL try and kill us. Is that really worth it? How many times will the world have to go through this?
- …So… he admitted Wily's plot had nothing to do with me. She seemed so… upset at that. …I don't want to talk about this anymore.
TOBIAS- I honestly don't feel I have a whole lot to say. My time at the lab never seemed bad at the time, just terribly lonely. Afterward… even more so, but I had hope.
- Dr. Light was… well, I really admired him. For a long time, I just wanted to make him happy. I wanted him to play with me like he did with Rock and Roll, to be proud of my achievements. I couldn't understand why he never paid much attention to me.
Dr. Wily always treated me like his son, even from the beginning. I didn't get to see him all that frequently until I started going over to his office during the night shift. He was always very proud of me, and he taught me a lot of things. He always said for me not to be jealous of Rock, and that I should never hurt someone just because I'm upset. …I always tried to live that out. - The argument the Doctors had was one of the worst experiences in my life. It was horrible, absolutely horrible. Everything changed that day—my entire life was turned upside-down.
Dr. Light… just… saw us as machines. He even… he even treated us like property. He sold us. He built me and he wanted to erase me when he learned I had feelings too. I still don't really understand.
Dr. Wily was different. He stood up for me. He wanted to protect me. He cared about me. I know a lot of people think he was a terrible man, but he wasn't. I don't care what they say, he'll always be my Dad to me. - I never meant to hurt anyone. I only wanted to set us free. I was so sure that people would listen—other people had made speeches before and changed the world. There was over a century of history to it. I thought… I thought that if I could just reach enough people, that they'd listen to me, too…
- I can't believe Rock was responsible. I just can't. That wasn't Rock. Listen, I knew Rock, okay? He was… arrogant at times, and he was the favorite, but he wasn't violent. He's just not capable of the kind of cruelty that happened. He isn't. Whatever that monster was, it wasn't him. It only looked like him. That thing was not my brother. …A-at the time I thought it might be him, but it had to have been a mistake, right? …Right?
CARDINAL- It's interesting to read the journals from the Doctors. They've changed a lot in the past twenty-two years. Like I said, when I knew Wily, he still had a spark of good. It's sad to look even further back and see from what height he had fallen. He might have been a revolutionary in the field. …What a waste.
- *Flatly* I don't buy that Light felt remorse for my disappearance. He wanted to erase me, and when I ran away, he didn't even try to find me. Chose to just pretend I had never even existed and forget about me entirely. And if you doubt that, just look at how he treated Tobias when the latter was revealed to possess an Emotions program. What was the first thing he did? Demand Tobias be erased.
- A lot of people see Dr. Light as this benevolent, almost saintly old man. I know better. The man's a liar. He discards whatever isn't useful to him anymore, and he loves to be praised. If he had been just a bit less proud, maybe Wily would never have stolen the DLN line in the first place.
Not that Wily is any better. He was a cranky old man with a thirst to be recognized, one even worse than Light had. He'd cheat and steal, not just lie. He was power-hungry by the end, and completely insane. Again, what a waste. - I pity Elecman. He was locked in the same room for months. It was like being in prison. No wonder he started to bang on the window and demand to be let out.
- The interactions between Elec and the Doctor are very revealing. He thought of Wily as his father, and Wily saw him as his son. It must have been the death of Tobias that made the Doctor completely insane.
- What do you mean, where was I during all of this? I was in hiding, of course.
- Tobias was a very clever AI&A. I don't think this is over.

{Rewrite Outline} (Since it will take a long time to actually write it up) Prologue: Cardinal makes it to the lab, his death approaching, but sees that Light is already using leftover materials from his /original/ chassis to build a model frame for Rock. He runs away into the desert, and makes it fairly close to Denver, where he stumbles upon a much younger Gonzales, who was en route to home for the first time after leaving the military. They spend some time talking together about whether robots deserve a chance, and Cardinal says that his dying wish is to not be thrown out, just in case they ever came looking for him, and that “if the Doctor comes…”, before he dies.
Main Story: Same as before, except that Tobias talks with Snow more, and becomes more proficient with the RobotMaster Database before he leaves, eventually asking about Protoman.
